EN: Thus I returned to the courtyard and found my wife already upstairs upon the roof, in the aforementioned room, together with the child. Our hearts ached, and we did not know what to do, for the illness was steadily intensifying. We began jointly considering what counsel to take: whether to travel with the child to Tzfas and remain there. I did not agree to this at all, because they would necessarily have to place him immediately in Hadassah Hospital, and all of us would be compelled to remain there; and who knew what would happen, and so forth. Yet remaining here likewise posed great danger to the child, and there was no one to help us; for now the great tumult was beginning, when no person knew what was happening with another, and so forth, and the rejoicing was so great that no one was conscious of anyone else at all. EN: We therefore concluded that my wife must travel immediately to Jerusalem with the child, while I would remain there through that day, until the following day, and then I too would return to Jerusalem. Afterward, however, I reconsidered: how could I remain even a single moment without knowing the child's condition? I would literally lose my mind, Heaven forbid, from the thoughts of my heart. Even now, while we were together, it was a miracle that my heart had not been torn from its place; how much more so if I were alone and could not see with my own eyes what was taking place, and so forth. EN: Accordingly, I had no other counsel than that all of us should remain together, wherever we might be. Yet I did not wish to reach any final decision before first entering beside the tziyun to pour out my personal supplication, and so forth. Only with great difficulty and amid severe crowding was I able to press my way into the bais midrash. It took a long time before I could enter the inner chamber; because of the crowd, it was exceedingly difficult to approach the tziyun. With self-sacrifice I succeeded only in drawing near enough to kiss the tziyun. I said nothing, because of the crowd and also because my heart was like stone, so that I could not speak at all. I could only gaze, as though saying, ‘You know my terrible and awesome condition better than I do,’ and so forth. EN: I went outside and found my wife. She told me that she had firmly resolved simply to flee and escape to Jerusalem, in the hope that she might yet arrive while the child was alive. My son, may his light shine, was with the child inside one Arab automobile; the automobile became filled with the child's vomit, so he left it and entered a second automobile, and so forth. Thus he went from one automobile to another among the empty vehicles standing there awaiting passengers. EN: Now I had made vows there: that I would make his peyos there and hold a meal there, and so forth. She said that a meal should be held at once. She took a very large number of eggs, boiled them, and distributed them to people together with mezonos. She asked them to bless her that through this she should be spared a mourner's meal, Heaven forbid, at which an egg is eaten, and so forth. I told her to distribute what remained to the members of our fellowship, and so forth. EN: I entered beside the holy tziyun with great difficulty to retrieve my garments, but I could not reach them and did not find them. The members of our fellowship, since they were remaining there, promised that if they found them they would return them to me in Jerusalem. I also took whatever remained of our food and gave it to them, and asked them to arouse abundant mercy beside the holy tziyun for the child, that he should live, and so forth. EN: I likewise took leave of my uncle, Rabbi Avraham Leib Zilberman, and of other relatives and acquaintances from Tzfas who had arrived. I asked them to forgive me, however, for I had no time to speak with them, since I was compelled to depart immediately with the sick child. I likewise took leave of the members of our fellowship and, from a distance, of the holy tziyun—for I could not approach closely—with the plea, ‘O Hashem, I am oppressed; be my guarantor’: that He should wrest the child from the Samech-Mem [the Angel of Death] against his will, and that Rabbi Shimon should stand as guarantor, just as he had stood as guarantor for Rabbi Yitzchak, of blessed memory, as stated above; and that Hashem, blessed be He, should have pity and compassion for the honor of His Name, and so forth. EN: I went outside with a heart full of anguish. The young man Aryeh accompanied me to take the food that remained, and together with another man helped us carry our belongings into one automobile. My wife asked one of the members of our fellowship, who was collecting money for a mitzvah, to enter among the entire congregation and search for my son Aharon, may his light shine, so that he could return with us. He replied that he was engaged in a mitzvah; she told him that danger to life supersedes everything, and so forth. He immediately accepted her words and, after great exertion, brought him to us. EN: I told my wife, may she live, to enter beside the holy tziyun and pour out her plea with weeping before Hashem, blessed be He, and the tzadik, that they should have mercy upon us, and so forth. She did so, but could not enter within, because the police no longer permitted people to press their way in. She stood at the side, poured out her prayer with weeping and petition, and so forth, and came out immediately. The immensity of the congregation already present, and continually coming and going, cannot be measured. The crowding within and without was greater and more intense than in preceding years. Outside, automobiles were arriving from every direction and corner, carrying people by the hundreds, and so forth. It was still before midday on Lag BaOmer, and they were preparing to kindle a great hadlakah during the day, and so forth. EN: But my heart was exceedingly bitter within me because I was compelled to depart immediately, in alarm and haste, from the source of life. I had always been accustomed to remain there through all three nights and beyond, and so forth. Moreover, we had already planned to lodge there another night and, on the following day, travel to all the holy sites in Tzfas, Tiberias, and Haifa, and so forth. Even in Meron itself I had not gone as far as the Cave of Bais Hillel, and so forth. EN: The taste of that Lag BaOmer of mine cannot be measured by the human mind. Only E-l, Elokim, Hashem knows the bitter taste—bitter as wormwood, and so forth—that I experienced then. My heart was literally like an inanimate stone, and nearly tore from its place because of my overwhelming anguish over the child's danger. Our only wish was that we might bring the child to Jerusalem still alive and pass along the road with him in peace, without any evil, Heaven forbid; for it was clear to us, and we feared, that the child might not survive the journey, Heaven forbid, since his condition was exceedingly critical, and so forth. EN: Thus we went from automobile to automobile. We considered boarding an automobile belonging to non-Jews, but were afraid; moreover, we had Egged tickets. In the meantime we found an Egged bus, whose driver told us that it was traveling directly to Jerusalem, and we boarded it. We gave the young man Aryeh a vessel full of eggs, together with bread and other things, to give to the members of our fellowship, and so forth. We sat on the bus for some time, waiting for it to depart. Meanwhile we saw people arriving by the thousands and tens of thousands, and so forth. I also saw my friend Yom Tov arrive, but because of the immensity of my heartache I did not go out to him or speak to him at all.
