Segment 1
HE:
וכן נסענו עם החפצים להעיר ובאנו לביתנו ברוך השם, ואני הלכתי להתפלל מנחה וערבית אצל כותל מערבי, ובקשתי שם מהשם יתברך שיחוס ויחמול למען שמו הגדול ולמען כבוד הצדיק, שיחיה הילד ויהיה לו רפואה שלימה, והיה תמיה בעיני האנשים שכבר חזרתי ממירון, ועוררתי גם אנשי שלומינו לבקש עבור הילד וגם את ר׳ שלמה ור׳ נתן ושאר אנשי שלומינו וכו׳, ולבי היה מר לי בקרבי מאד עד שלא יכולתי לבקש ורק בלבי צעקתי להשם יתברך שיושיע למענו.

We then traveled with the belongings into the Old City and, blessed be Hashem, reached our home. I went to the Western Wall to pray Minchah and Maariv. There I pleaded with Hashem, blessed be He, to have pity and compassion for the sake of His great Name and for the honor of the tzadik: that the child should live and have a complete recovery. The people were astonished that I had already returned from Meron. I also aroused the members of our fellowship to pray for the child—Rabbi Shlomo, Rabbi Nosson, and the other members of our fellowship, and so forth. My heart was exceedingly bitter within me, to the point that I could not pray aloud; only in my heart did I cry out to Hashem, blessed be He, that He should save him for His own sake.

Segment 2
HE:
וכן חזרתי לביתי ונתנו להילד מעט חלב חמאה אבל היה חולה אנוש ומוציא ומקיא וכו׳, וקראנו לר׳ שלום זלוטניק שהוא מבין מעט על חולים אבל לא ידע כלל מה עם הילד, וכן עבר עלינו הלילה הזאת וברוך השם הילד עודנו חי.

EN:
I returned home, and we gave the child a little buttermilk; but he was critically ill, purging and vomiting, and so forth. We summoned Rabbi Shalom Zlotnik, who possessed some understanding of illness, but he could not discern at all what was wrong with the child. Thus that night passed over us, and, blessed be Hashem, the child was still alive.

Segment 3
HE:
והלכתי להתפלל וותיקין והייתי במקוה וממש מוחי ולבי אין עמי מצער הילד וכו׳, ואחר התפלה ובאתי לבית וראיתי מצב הילד לא טוב, ולא ידענו לשית עצות בנפשינו, כי לדרוש ברופאים לא רצינו ויראנו מזה מאד, ולהניחו כך גם כן לא ידענו מה לעשות ומה להאכילו, והיה לנו כח ברזל לסבול הלילה הזאת והבוקר צער וספיקות המוח מה לעשות וכו׳.

EN:
I went to pray vasikin and immersed in the mikveh, while my mind and heart were utterly absent from me because of the anguish over the child, and so forth. After the prayer I came home and saw that the child's condition was not good. We did not know what counsel to take: we did not wish to consult physicians and were greatly afraid of doing so, yet neither did we know what to do if we left him as he was, nor what to feed him. Iron strength was required of us to endure that night and morning, with the anguish and mental doubts as to what we should do, and so forth.

Segment 4

והנה כאשר ישבנו כה וחושבים מה לעשות, פתאום באה אצלינו אחות אשתי ובנותיה ונתנו לנו שלום עליכם(, וגם כבדו אותנו על שנסענו עם הילד וכו׳), ואמרה שנתוודעה משכנה אשה אחת שישבה עם זוגתי ביחד במירון וראתה וספרה לה הכל, ועל כן באתה אצלינו לראות שלום הילד, וכאשר ראתה הילד נבהלה, ודיברה על לב זוגתי תחיה שתצא עם הילד לביתה ותלך אתה לד" ר בלומנטל.

While we sat there considering what to do, my wife's sister and her daughters suddenly came to us and greeted us—also rebuking us for having traveled with the child, and so forth. She said that she had learned the matter from a neighboring woman who had sat together with my wife in Meron, had seen everything, and had related it to her. She had therefore come to inquire after the child's welfare. When she saw him, she was alarmed, and spoke earnestly to my wife, may she live, urging her to go with the child to her house, after which she would accompany her to Dr. Blumenthal.

כי לפני פסח הזה היה גם כן הילד הקטן שלה חולה, והמעשה היה כך כי בעת שהיינו מנקים על חג הפסח באו בני המחותנים של גיסי וקראו אותי לחוץ, ואמרו לי כי אחות אשתי וגיסי שלחה אותם אלי שיאמרו לי שאבקש רחמים עבור בנם הקטן חיים אלעזר, ושאעשה מה שאני יודע ויכול לעשות עבורו, כי הוא חולה מסוכן ואנוש ושד" ר כגן כבר ייאשה אותו וכו׳ ועל כן אעשה מה שאוכל.

For before that Pesach her own little child had likewise been ill. The incident had been as follows. While we were cleaning in preparation for the Pesach festival, the sons of my brother-in-law's mechutanim [relatives by marriage] came and called me outside. They told me that my wife's sister and brother-in-law had sent them to ask me to arouse mercy for their little son, Chaim Elazar, and to do whatever I knew and was able to do on his behalf, for he was dangerously and critically ill and Dr. Kagan had already despaired of his recovery, and so forth. I was therefore to do whatever I could.

Segment 6

ולקחתי אצלם סכום כסף עבור פדיון ועבור מנין אצל הכותל המערבי, ובקשו אותי שלא אספר לזוגתי כדי שלא תצטער והלכו להם, וכן עשיתי ושאלה אותי זוגתי מה רצו ממך ואמרתי לה איזה תירוץ, ואני ירדתי תיכף לבית המדרש ואמרתי תהלים בבכיה בדמעות והרביתי בתפלה עבור הילד, ועשיתי פדיון ואמרתי התפלה של פדיון המובא בלקוטי תפלות סימן ק״ד וסימן קכ״ג ושאר תפלות של רפואה וכו׳.

EN:
I received from them a sum of money for a pidyon and for a minyan at the Western Wall. They asked me not to tell my wife so that she would not be distressed, and departed. I did as requested. When my wife asked what they had wanted of me, I gave her some pretext. I immediately went down to the bais midrash, recited Tehillim with weeping and tears, and offered abundant prayer for the child. I performed a pidyon and recited the prayer for a pidyon appearing in Likutay Tefilos, Siman 104 and Siman 123, together with other prayers for healing, and so forth.

Segment 7
HE:
וחלקתי הכסף לעניים נצרכים מאנשי שלומינו, ועוררתי אנשי שלומינו לבקש עבורו, ובבוקר יצאתי להתוודע משלומו ונתוודעתי משלום הילד, וספרו לי איך שהוא חולה במחלת הקיבה ומקיא ומוציא וכו׳, עד שהלכו לרופאה כגן.

EN:
I distributed the money among needy poor people from the members of our fellowship and aroused the members of our fellowship to pray for him. In the morning I went out to learn of his condition and obtained news of the child. They told me that he was suffering from an intestinal illness, vomiting and purging, and so forth. They had ultimately taken him to the physician, Dr. Kagan.

Segment 8

שהיא היתה הרופאה מלפני איזה שנים אצל ילדם משה שהיה חולה גדול זמן רב וכו /ואז קודם יום כיפור עוררתי זוגתי והלכה ולקחה אצל אחותה ח״י גרוש על פדיון, ואמרתי תפלה של פדיון ונתתי הכסף לר׳ ישראל דוב מאנשי שלומינו, שידעתי שהוא נצרך מאד, וכן היה שממש לא היה לו כפרות ולא היה להם מה לאכול קודם התענית ובזה הכסף ממש החיו אותם, ומאז והלאה התחיל הגורל של הילד להשתנות לטובה, והלכו לד" ר כגן והיא הצליחה ברפואותיה, וגם הוציאו כסף הרבה להבריא הילד עד שברוך השם נתרפא מחליו.

She had also been the physician, several years earlier, for their son Moshe, who had been seriously ill for a long time, and so forth. At that time, before Yom Kippur, I urged my wife, and she went and obtained eighteen grush from her sister for a pidyon. I recited the prayer for a pidyon and gave the money to Rabbi Yisrael Dov, a member of our fellowship, whom I knew to be in very great need. Indeed, he literally had nothing with which to obtain kapparos, and his household had nothing to eat before the fast; this money literally sustained them. From then onward the child's fate began to change for the better. They went to Dr. Kagan, who succeeded with her treatments; they also expended much money to restore the child's health, until, blessed be Hashem, he recovered from his illness.

Segment 9
HE:
וכן הלכו גם עם זה הילד לד״ר כגן כי היא המומחית, והיא טפלה איזה זמן בהילד עד שייאשה אותו כי אינה יודעת עצה בשבילו וכו׳, ואז באו אלי במרירות כנ״ל לעשות מה שאוכל, ועשינו בפדיון ומנין אנשי שלומינו אצל הכותל מערבי וחילוק הכסף לנצרכים כנ״ל.

EN:
They likewise took this child to Dr. Kagan, since she was the specialist. She treated the child for some time, until she despaired of him and said that she knew no remedy for him, and so forth. They then came to me in bitterness, as stated above, asking me to do whatever I could. We carried out a pidyon and assembled a minyan of members of our fellowship at the Western Wall, and distributed the money to those in need, as stated above.

Segment 10

ואז הצליחו שהלכו עם הילד לד״ר בלומנטל והתחיל ליתן רפואות להילד, וגם צוה ליקח הרבה קופסאות חלב חמאה יקרים ממין אחד וליתן הרבה להילד, ואף על פי שמקיא זאת לבלי להביט על זה וכמה שנכנס בפיו טוב, ואל ישגיחו על ממון כלל, וכן הוה שעבר זמן והוא הבריא עד שנתרפא לגמרי ברוך השם, וכן כשבאה עתה לזוגתי עוררה אותה שתלך אצלה עם הילד שלנו, וילכו לד״ר בלומנטל כי הוא ידידם ומכירם כי הוא מומחה לדבר והשם יתברך יעזור.

Then they succeeded in taking the child to Dr. Blumenthal. He began administering medicines to the child and also instructed them to obtain many expensive tins of a particular kind of buttermilk and give the child large quantities of it. Even though he vomited it, they were not to pay attention to this; whatever entered his mouth was beneficial. Nor were they to take any account of the expense. So it was: after some time he improved, until, blessed be Hashem, he recovered completely. Thus, when my wife's sister now came to my wife, she urged her to go to her house with our child and then take him to Dr. Blumenthal, for he was their friend, knew them, and was an expert in this matter; Hashem, blessed be He, would help.
