EN: Now, in view of the child’s exceedingly critical condition, my brother-in-law and the members of his household were greatly afraid that, God forbid, the child might expire there in their home. Nevertheless, they had no choice but to allow the child to remain with them that night, for they understood better how to care for the child and administer the medicines, and so forth. Moreover, on the following day it would be necessary to take the child to the physician once again, as he had instructed them, as stated above. They were therefore compelled, against their will, to consent that we remain with them that night. EN: I then thought to myself that I would now fulfill, in my own situation, the lesson of the incident that occurred in the time of Rabbainu, of blessed memory. Rabbi Shimon, Rabbainu’s attendant, had a sick child. He went to Rabbainu, of blessed memory, and asked him to plead for mercy on the child’s behalf. Rabbainu, of blessed memory, answered him in an offhand manner, as though to say that there was nothing at all to discuss concerning the matter. He returned home, and his wife asked him, “What did Rabbainu, of blessed memory, tell you concerning the child?” He answered her that Rabbainu, of blessed memory, had replied that there was nothing to discuss concerning it. What did his wife do? She sat the entire night beside the child, who lay in his cradle, and she wept and prayed before Hashem, may He be blessed, that He heal the child, and so forth. In the morning Rabbi Shimon again went to Rabbainu, of blessed memory. As soon as Rabbainu saw him, he said to him: “Who can rightly estimate the compassion of Hashem, may He be blessed? It was not enough that she prayed him out of danger; she also brought about long life for him.” (Who can measure the compassion of Hashem, may He be blessed? Not only did she save him, but she also brought about long life for him.) EN: For Rabbainu, of blessed memory, had seen that he possessed no counsel and no means of sweetening the judgments for the child’s benefit. In the end, however, through the prayer of the child’s mother, she brought about even long life for him, and he lived to nearly one hundred years of age. I likewise heard from some of our fellow Breslover Chassidim of an incident that occurred to them with their child, who was critically ill. They sat the entire night beside the child’s bed and wept and prayed before Hashem, may He be blessed, and Hashem, may He be blessed, helped them, and the child recovered. EN: I therefore thought that I, too, would do this: I would sit the entire night beside the child’s cradle and arouse mercy from the depth of my heart that the child should live. Blessed be Hashem, he still possessed the breath of life, so I could yet do this, and there was still hope, and so forth. I entered the inner room and approached the child’s cradle. I saw the child lying there as one who was expiring, God forbid: his eyes were open, his mouth was open, he could no longer see with his eyes, and every few moments he moved his mouth from side to side. EN: In truth—may he be distinguished for life—my first daughter, who passed away, and the son who passed away, possessed more breath of life at the time of their passing than did this child, whose life-force had virtually come to an end, like a candle just before it is extinguished, and so forth. When I saw this, terror and dread seized me, and so forth, until I was nearly in utter despair. Nevertheless, I strengthened myself and only poured out bitter weeping before Hashem, may He be blessed, pleading that He spare me and have mercy upon me for the sake of His great Name and for the sake of the merit of His holy tzaddikim, and so forth. They dragged the cradle into the outer room and instructed me not to doze at all, for it was forbidden to leave the child without supervision even for a moment, since he might expire, God forbid. EN: I sat beside the child and his cradle, raising my eyes toward Hashem, may He be blessed, while in my heart I cried to Him, “Please spare us; please have compassion; please have mercy,” and so forth. With a small spoon I placed buttermilk into his mouth, exercising great judgment so that he would not vomit. He nevertheless vomited, though not as much as he had with them. Every half hour or quarter hour their daughter Miriam came out to me, felt the child’s pulse, examined his nostrils to determine whether he still possessed the breath of life, and rubbed his forehead and temples to rouse him so that he should not remain in a faint, God forbid. My serenity and the sweet taste I experienced may readily be understood: I sat the entire night beside the child, observing his condition as he lay expiring, God forbid, nearly at the point of death, while my eyes were filled with tears and looked toward Hashem, may He be blessed: Spare us and have mercy. EN: In truth, even were all the seas ink, human power would be utterly incapable of comprehending in mind and understanding the magnitude of my anguish and suffering throughout that entire period—from the Shabbos preceding Lag BaOmer, as stated above, until Hashem, may He be blessed, came to our aid. Human power cannot comprehend all my anguish and suffering. My mind and heart were quite literally not with me, and it was a miracle from Heaven that my heart did not rupture, or that my mind did not break and I did not lose my sanity, God forbid. EN: Thus the entire night passed in anguish and suffering that reached heart and soul. I strengthened myself only with the thought that his condition was better, for, blessed be Hashem, he was still alive, and he had not vomited as much as previously, because I had watched him carefully and had acted with great judgment, as stated above. EN: I went to pray the Vasikin service. I borrowed a tallis and tefillin and prayed with alacrity. When I returned from prayer, my wife went with the child to the aforementioned Dr. Blumenthal; her sister and her sister’s daughter accompanied her. I remained in their home and waited with yearning eyes for good news. In the meantime, my brother-in-law also prayed. They subsequently returned from the physician and related that he had seen the child. In contrast to the previous day, when he had held out hope, prescribed medicine, and instructed them repeatedly to give the child an abundance of costly buttermilk in order to sustain his life, now, upon seeing the child, he did not even wish to speak with them and did not wish to examine him at all. Only with great difficulty did they prevail upon him to examine the child and speak with them. EN: He told them that he had no counsel whatsoever, that he could not revive the dead, and that the child possessed no vitality, God forbid, and could live only a few more hours (“he has no life-force”). He asked them to leave his home, and so forth, and would speak no further. When they asked whether they should give him the buttermilk and the medicine he had prescribed the previous day, he answered that “it is all the same”—as though to say that it made no difference and that they might do as they pleased. They left his home crushed in spirit. When I heard this report from them, one can readily understand the sweet taste I experienced then. It penetrated my mind and heart to the point of the soul’s expiration. Because of the overwhelming sensation of anguish, I was no longer in possession of my reason or my mind, and so forth; only my eyes looked toward Hashem, may He be blessed, and so forth, as stated above.
