EN: Afterward I returned home, and we ate a meal of milk and honey in order to fulfill the verse, “Honey and milk are beneath your tongue,” and so forth. I went to the synagogue in Batei Machseh. One of our fellow Breslover Chassidim saw me and asked whether I had already been at the tomb of King David, peace be upon him. I answered that I had not, since the crowding there was presumably great and it would be impossible to enter. He replied that he had just come from there, that there was no crowding at all, and that one could enter easily without any difficulty whatsoever. EN: I immediately girded my loins, took my son with me, and also awakened my older son, may his light shine, so that he, too, might go. I ran there with one of my sons and reached the place by way of Tzion Gate, which was open. Since there were only a few people present, I was not delayed for long. I immediately entered with my son Aharon, may his light shine, and recited Tikkun Haklali there by heart, for they did not permit anyone to open a book. EN: In earlier years—that is, several years previously, before my journey outside Eretz Yisrael—we had been accustomed to enter the tomb of King David on Shavuos. The building was filled from one end to the other throughout the entire day. Together we would recite the whole of Tehillim, which took several hours, apart from prayers that I myself would recite for several more hours, and so forth. We would thus spend almost the greater portion of the day at the tomb of King David, peace be upon him. Every observer was deeply moved at the sight of the multitude of people and the great arousal that prevailed there throughout the day. On the following day, Isru Chag, we likewise spent much time there. EN: Already one year before my journey, however, they instituted a system under which people were not permitted to enter and remain. One entered from one side and had to leave immediately from the other. Our eyes truly shed tears over this, for they thereby abolished the extraordinary arousal and holiness that had formerly been generated there on that day, as stated above. Now they no longer permit people to approach the entrance of the cave, which is near the doorway through which we had entered. Instead, they push the visitors to go upstairs by the steps and enter a room from which one sees a second room containing a grave. People say that this is the grave of one of their sheikhs. There they permit people to remain briefly and pray. EN: Those who did not wish to go to that place, but desired only to stand in the large room—particularly near the doorway where the entrance to the cave is situated, as stated above—were not permitted to remain at all. They especially did not permit anyone to open a book under any circumstances. They would say, “You have the Western Wall at which to pray,” and so forth. For they are constantly afraid that through our prayers we might bring about the Redemption, and so forth. They therefore exert themselves with all their power at the holy places under their control, into which we are permitted to enter, to prevent us from opening a book to pray and from remaining there. EN: They are especially alarmed when someone sheds tears in prayer and will not permit this under any circumstances, and so forth. For they represent the husk of Yishmael, the husk of the right side: “For Hashem has heard your affliction,” and you therefore need not pray any longer, and so forth. People were immediately compelled to leave against their will. On Isru Chag they do not permit entry without payment of three grush for each person, and even then only in this manner—entering and immediately leaving. Since then I have no longer gone there on Isru Chag. EN: As soon as I entered, I positioned myself at the side near the doorway and recited Tikkun Haklali with great speed. I orally presented my petitions concerning both the community and the individual. In particular, I pleaded from the depth of my heart that my son, may his light shine, should recover from his illness. I also aroused my son Aharon to pray on his behalf, and so forth. With great difficulty and through many stratagems, I managed to linger there for some time. I pleaded with tears, as stated above, until I could remain no longer, for they were already driving me out by force. EN: I then began to leave. They asked whether I wished to remove my shoes and go upstairs into the aforementioned room of the sheikh, but I did not wish to do so. I left, continuing to present my petitions throughout the entire time that I walked, and so forth. Blessed be Hashem, I emerged happy and glad of heart that I had merited entering this sacred place with ease on the holy anniversary of King David’s passing. EN: Immediately upon leaving I saw that more people were already standing in line to enter. I hurried home and urged my son Moshe, may his light shine, to go there before the crowd became great, and so forth, and he did so. I also urged my wife, may she live, to go with my younger son, may his light shine, and to plead there with arousal for the sick child. My younger son, may his light shine, prayed and pleaded every day with all his heart that his brother should recover, and so forth. EN: My wife, may she live, immediately took the child and went with him. She returned, however, because a great crowd had already gathered and the congestion was severe. My young son wept because he did not wish to force himself through the crowd. They therefore returned without entering, and she presented her petitions outside, and so forth. She came back home. Meanwhile, my older son Moshe, may his light shine, also returned. He had still managed to enter, since the crowd had not yet become very large. He went inside, remained for a short while, recited several chapters of Tehillim, presented his petitions, and immediately left from the other side. By the time he emerged, rows upon rows of people were already standing to enter, with the aforementioned congestion.
