EN: On Thursday, Isru Chag, after prayer and after performing our devotions for the child’s benefit through pidyonos and the recitation of Tehillim and prayers, we ate and prepared ourselves to go and visit the child at Hadassah Hospital. My wife, may she live, and I walked there on foot. It was precisely midday, the sun beat against our faces, and the distance was great. EN: Yet love disrupts the established order. The great intensity of our desire, yearning, and longing to see the child prevailed over our hardships and exhaustion. So, too, did our yearning eyes and the fear within our hearts regarding his state: What was his condition? With one who is critically ill in this manner, the condition can readily change at every single moment. It is impossible even in thought to assess the profound distress of our hearts and our fear on each of the days when we went to visit him—from the moment we left our home until we finally merited seeing him—that we should not, God forbid, hear bad news. EN: We walked together until we reached the hospital. The time for entry had not yet arrived, and we were compelled to wait nearly another hour. Every moment surely seemed to us a very long time, for our eyes already yearned to see him. Meanwhile I saw the attendant, the bearer of tidings, with the notices in his hand, searching for the people to whom he was to deliver them. I was exceedingly afraid that I, too, might be among those for whom such a report was intended. The distress of our hearts may readily be understood. At last we merited hearing the bell ring—the signal that entry was permitted. EN: The multitude of people began to press forward to enter, and we entered among them. I ran quickly upstairs so that I might arrive before my wife and be able to bring her good news. EN: When I reached the upper floor where the children lay, I entered the room and approached the bed. The bed was empty, and the child was not there. No human heart can measure my anguish and distress, which reached to the point of the soul’s expiration. I was terrified, for who knew what had occurred? Our hearts had continually feared this. I went back outside. EN: Meanwhile my wife arrived. I detained her outside, offering as a pretext that it was not then possible to enter the room. In the meantime we saw a nurse carrying the child into the room and placing him upon the bed. My soul quite literally returned within me when I saw him. The nurse warned us not to approach him at that time, because they had given him an injection and he needed rest. We therefore stood at a distance for some time. EN: Afterward we approached him. He began to cry and sigh because he had longed for us and wanted us to take him into our arms. His mother held him briefly but could not continue, for he was exceedingly emaciated—almost bones without flesh—and his entire body was punctured with holes from the injections. We placed him back down. He cried and sighed. Nevertheless, we rejoiced to see him, for, blessed be Hashem, he was alive and already possessed sufficient awareness to cry and sigh. Although our anguish over his condition was still very great, we thanked Hashem for this much and would plead before Hashem, may He be blessed, concerning the future, that He restore him completely to full strength. EN: We remained there for the entire time that visitors were permitted to stay. I played with him a little, while his mother sat at a distance so that he would not see her and begin to cry. I searched for the register in which the patients’ conditions and weights were recorded. We saw that his weight was exceedingly low and that he was not gaining. Nevertheless, we discerned that his condition was slightly better than before. As we left him, we took his hand in ours and pleaded for his complete recovery. EN: I also showed him the tzitzis so that he might gaze upon them, for it is a segulah for a sick person to gaze upon the tzitzis, as is brought in Likutay Moharan, Lesson 7. We left, and he began to cry intensely. We told him that with the help of Hashem, may He be blessed, he would attain a complete recovery and we would take him home alive and well. He cried greatly. We stood outside and listened, and heard him continue crying for some time. Afterward he placed his finger in his mouth and sighed repeatedly. EN: We approached the nurses’ office and asked about the child’s condition. They replied that it was slightly better, and we rejoiced greatly. We returned with greater strength, joy, and trust in Hashem, may He be blessed. I spoke with my wife, may she live, about my vow to travel once more to Meron and whether I should do so now. I did not, however, possess the money for this; nor did I wish or desire to separate myself from the child for several days without knowing his condition. EN: We returned to Meah Shearim and informed my father-in-law, of blessed memory, that the child’s condition was slightly better, in order to gladden him. We had also already purchased meat and fish for Shabbos, and we returned home joyfully. During our return journey we took a shortcut through the field to the tomb of Shimon HaTzaddik, may his merit protect us, amen. In the middle of the road, a very large, thick thorn penetrated the heel of my foot. The whole thorn entered the flesh, and I was unable to remove it. It caused me great suffering and pain. EN: In this state we entered the tomb of Shimon HaTzaddik, may his merit protect us, amen, and presented our petitions from the depth of the heart, as on every occasion. Many men and women were also there, in accordance with the Sephardi custom to go to the tomb of Shimon HaTzaddik, may his merit protect us, amen, on Isru Chag. They kindled many candles and oil lamps and recited a Mi Shebeirach for those who came. EN: We presented our petitions, and I recited Tikkun Haklali and other prayers. From there we went to Meah Shearim, as stated above. I walked the entire distance with pain in my foot, accepting it as an atonement for sins and asking only that the child return to full strength. When I reached home, my wife gave me boiling water, and I immersed my foot in it for some time. I repeated this several times, and the pain ceased. I did not remove the thorn, however, because I was unable to do so. Nor did I go anywhere to have it removed, for I feared that this would cause me great suffering and pain. The thorn therefore remained in my foot. To this very day I have not removed it; it remains in my foot, but it causes me no pain. Apparently, because it is lodged in the thick flesh of the sole, it can do no harm. Moreover, the hot water presumably caused the thorn to decay, and for that reason it does not hurt. EN: On Friday I likewise performed my devotions through pidyonos, lots, prayers, and the recitation of Shir HaShirim before the light of morning. After midday I also went to the Western Wall and aroused mercy. My wife likewise went to the Wall every day and requested nothing whatever except on the child’s behalf. Before the kindling of the Shabbos lamps, I once again cast the lot “for Hashem” and “for Azazel.” Blessed be Hashem, we received the Shabbos following Shavuos—the Shabbos of Parashas Behaaloscha—with joy. We looked toward Hashem, may He be blessed, that in the merit of the joy of the holy Shabbos He should send our son a complete recovery. EN: On the holy Shabbos I surely mentioned the child and aroused mercy on his behalf. I also recited Shir HaShirim before the light of day and “And on your New Moons.” The Mi Shebeirach recited for a sick person at the Torah scroll continued without interruption throughout that entire period, as did the recitation of Prayer 104, concerning all twenty-four forms of pidyon, and the names of the tzaddikim. EN: In sum, we did everything within our power—during the Shabbos prayers, during the Shabbos meals, and at every favorable time. Even when in prayer I also mentioned and pleaded for the mercy required by the community, and so forth, my wife would always answer me that she presently had no other request, neither for the community nor for any individual, except solely that the child should live, and so forth.
