EN: Blessed be Hashem, Shabbos passed over us with greater joy and with expectation of deliverance and mercy, that we should merit seeing the child alive and well. In sum, blessed be Hashem, we received the Shabbos in peace, with vitality and joy, and performed upon it whatever we could in the service of Hashem, may He be blessed, and for the child’s benefit, both at night and by day. On Sunday after prayer we likewise did what lay within our power through prayer, petition, the sweetening of judgments, other prayers, and Tehillim. Afterward we did what was incumbent upon us and went to visit the child at midday, in the full force of the heat. Although this was exceedingly difficult for us, it was pleasant and easy in our eyes for the sake of meriting to see the child. EN: The burden of the road and the heat of the blazing sun passed over us with sweetness and pleasantness, as did our standing for half an hour or more while we waited for the time at which we could enter. We entered and ascended to the upper floor where the children were situated, and approached the bed on which the child lay. Yet instead of seeing his condition improve each time, as we had expected, our joy was darkened. From before Shavuos until then, our joy had been like the joy of harvest in summer, for each time we had seen his condition improve. Although the changes had been only “a little here and a little there,” we had at least seen some change on every visit, and as a result we had already expected soon to see him in our home in complete joy. EN: In the end, however, when we saw him, it appeared to us that his condition had deteriorated from what it had been initially. A senior nurse was there with a list of the patients she was examining, on which their conditions were recorded, and I saw that the child’s condition was marked “not good.” I also saw the nurses’ small register in which the children’s weights were recorded. When I saw his very poor weight I was terrified, for not only had he failed to gain weight, but he had actually lost still more. EN: The magnitude of our anguish and suffering cannot be measured, for our hope and joy had suddenly been overturned. We remained there throughout the allotted hour, but we were exceedingly pained and anxious. I told my wife that I deeply regretted not yet having fulfilled my vow to travel to Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit protect us, amen, at the time when I saw the child’s condition steadily improving. Now, however, when we saw that the child’s condition had deteriorated, it was surely impossible for me to travel, for how could I live without seeing the child? EN: We sat there for a short while. The nurse placed food into the children’s mouths. We saw the small quantity of liquid they gave him and wondered how this could sustain his life or enable him to gain weight. In the end, after she had finished feeding him, he vomited violently and brought up everything. We saw this, and the state of our hearts and our joy at the sight may readily be understood. Finally, the nurse drove us out to the corridor and instructed us to wait until she had finished feeding the children, for she could not bear to administer the food while people watched her. EN: My wife, may she live, and I sat at the table in the corridor and discussed what could be done for the child, while our hearts were filled with anguish to the very soul. I consoled her, however, saying that we must thank Hashem, may He be blessed, for having performed such great miracles and wonders with the child, so that he remained alive when we had not believed this possible at all. We must therefore believe in Hashem and trust Him, for He would surely help us now as well, improve the child’s condition, and sustain him upon his bed of illness. EN: With my eyes I looked outside at those beautiful buildings and courtyards, and I raised my eyes heavenward that He have mercy upon us, bring us forth, and rescue us from this confinement and calamity, which constricted our minds and hearts and weighed heavily upon us. May He have mercy upon us and heal the child of his illness through His great power. We sat thus until the nurse had finished feeding the children and then entered. When the child saw us, he wept and sighed repeatedly. We consoled him, saying, “Hashem, may He be blessed, will soon help us, and we will take you home alive and well.” EN: The time to leave arrived, and we went out and began our return journey together. We spoke throughout the entire way. I consoled her, explaining that we must wait for Hashem, may He be blessed. We must only strengthen ourselves still more in prayer and petition before Hashem, may He be blessed, look toward Him and wait for Him, and think only good thoughts, for thought possesses great power, and so forth. EN: On the road we encountered David Yulis and his wife, our neighbors from Batei Ungarin. They, too, had a sick child in another ward. They said that their child’s medical condition was better, but that he was not gaining weight, perhaps because he was not being given the foods he required. They were considering whether they should arrange to remove him from the hospital. EN: They also told us that they, too, had been telephoning the hospital to inquire after their child. They saw, however, that the telephone caused them yearning of the eyes and anguish of soul, because the staff did not answer them properly. As stated above, we ourselves had several times suffered anguish and grief through the telephone. From then onward we restrained ourselves from hearing any report concerning the child until we came and saw him eye to eye. At that time we also asked the nurses face to face how the child was, but now they no longer answered us properly even in person. EN: David and his wife had therefore resolved to go to the Hadassah clinic in the city while Dr. Rabinowitz was receiving patients and speak with him concerning their child’s condition. We likewise resolved that my wife would go each day to the old Hadassah clinic and, while Dr. Rabinowitz was receiving patients there, ask him about the child’s condition. EN: On our return journey we entered the tomb of Shimon HaTzaddik, may his merit protect us, amen, as was always our practice. This time, however, we poured out our conversation with bitterness and weeping, made vows, and increased prayer and petition that Hashem, may He be blessed, have mercy upon us and help us. EN: We also entered Meah Shearim and told my father-in-law, of blessed memory, of the child’s condition so that he would plead for mercy. We returned to the city in a state of anguish and suffering. My wife went to the Western Wall and pleaded for mercy, as was her daily practice at that time. Toward evening I went to pray Minchah and Maariv at the Western Wall. I personally aroused mercy before Hashem, may He be blessed, on the child’s behalf, while my heart and eyes were directed toward Hashem, may He be blessed. EN: I likewise urged our fellow Breslover Chassidim to arouse still greater mercy. In truth, throughout the entire period all our fellow Breslover Chassidim continually aroused abundant mercy for the child. Other residents of the city also pleaded for mercy, for the child’s illness had touched their hearts. They constantly asked about his condition, since his becoming ill in Meron on Lag BaOmer had made an impression upon everyone. EN: Rabbi Horowitz, the president of Batei Machseh, would likewise call down from his balcony to ask me how the child was. The entire city was in a state of ferment. Many shook their heads in grief, participated in our anguish, inquired after the child, and pleaded on his behalf. Many others caused us pain, asking how we could have done such a thing as take so young a child to Meron on Lag BaOmer and thereby kill him with our own hands. Our relatives surely likewise tormented us with abuse and insults. All our fellow Breslover Chassidim were touched to the very soul and prayed and mentioned his name for good.
