EN: We entered Rabbi Baruch's synagogue to pray Minchah. We waited there, sang, and danced, etc. I felt myself in a state of lowliness, but revived myself together with my friend Rabbi Yom Tov mentioned above and the other newly drawn adherents from Shaarei Chesed. We spoke at length about Rabbainu, of blessed memory, and about drawing close to the service of Hashem, and we spent much time together in love, faithful friendship, spiritual arousal, and strengthening. EN: There was also at the wedding a young married man from Poland who had only recently arrived from Poland and now lived in Tel Aviv. He was evidently an extraordinary badchan, for he performed wonderfully in his badchanus, composing rhymed pieces upon every subject: upon Germany and Russia, etc.; in denunciation of Hitler; upon the sanctity of Israel, the Binding of Yitzchak, and the sale of Yosef, etc., etc. We likewise sang and danced a great deal. EN: Afterward they told us to go pray Maariv. Many went out to pray in Rabbi Baruch's synagogue, which was in that courtyard, as stated above. We did not wish to press ourselves in among the women, however, and therefore prayed there in the house with the groom, in a minyan. We remained there for some time. They then ordered us to enter another room, because the women would be seated in the room we occupied. We went into the other room, where a table had been set for the assembled public. I sat among the members of our fellowship, near the groom. My friend Yom Tov also came from his work, sat beside me, and we ate the wedding meal together. EN: During the meal each man spoke with his companion about the present time and the dreadful and terrible sufferings of the Jews in Poland. Every heart melted like water: each man had family and relatives there, and who knew what was happening to them, since there was no news whatever. This certainly kept us far from genuine joy (“joy simply would not enter the heart”). We therefore sat without the joy customary among us at all times, and especially at a wedding. At present, however, the mourning over the sufferings of Israel could be plainly seen in the obstruction of our joy. EN: The badchan mentioned above was therefore the principal means of bringing us some joy through his badchanus. For many hours he performed with extraordinary skill, describing how matters would be when Mashiach Tzidkeinu came: Hitler would clean the privies, etc.; everything would be conducted by us and in a Chassidic manner, with large peyos, etc. It was exceedingly wondrous to hear all of it in rhyme, etc. EN: Several other members of our fellowship likewise recited pieces. One of the newer adherents, who had arrived from Russia some time earlier, recited a rhymed song about the Giving of the Torah - how Hashem wished to give the Torah to Adam HaRishon, and it was already prepared, but through his sin with the Tree of Knowledge he forfeited it, etc.; afterward to Noach, etc.; afterward to Avraham, etc.; afterward to Yitzchak, etc.; and afterward to Yaakov. In each case some new occurrence arose through which they forfeited receiving the Torah, etc., until Moshe Rabbainu, peace be upon him, came, in whom no blemish or deficiency was found. It also described how the Holy One, blessed be He, carried the Torah among the nations - Esav, Yishmael, etc. - and how they all refused it because it contained “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” etc.; and afterward how He gave it to Israel. All of this was in rhyme, exceedingly wondrous and beautiful. EN: In sum, I was greatly awakened from every side: first, through the lowliness and weakness of spirit I had felt beforehand (through which there was fulfilled in me, “And Pharaoh drew near,” as Rabbainu explains in Likutay Moharan: sufferings, weakness of spirit, and lowliness draw a person near to Hashem; for when one sees that there is no one to whom one can draw close and from whom one can receive vitality, and no one with whom one can occupy oneself, one returns to Hashem and occupies oneself with Him in Torah, prayer, and hisbodedus, etc.); second, through the sufferings of the community, by which I was newly awakened to the service of Hashem; and third, through seeing the members of our fellowship generally, and my friend mentioned above and the badchanus in particular. EN: I also purchased two pictures: one depicting the Holy of Holies together with the Foundation Stone (I saw this for the first time, and the sight was precious to me), and another depicting the synagogue and the tomb of Rabbi Meir Baal HaNes, etc. EN: We continued at the wedding for a long time, until near midnight. The members of the wedding families did not yet wish to recite Bircas HaMazon, because they specifically wished to eat at that time. We argued, however, that we had to return to the Old City, that it was already so late, and that it was raining, etc. We therefore recited Bircas HaMazon and danced a few dances. Afterward we negotiated with the mechutan until he agreed to provide us with a taxi to travel back into the city. Six men sat in the taxi (for some had already gone on foot, while others remained to lodge outside the city), and we traveled into the city as far as the vicinity of Shuk Yisrael. EN: There we resolved to go together to the Western Wall to recite Chatzos, since the time of midnight had already arrived, etc. We all went together and recited Chatzos. I recited it with weeping and with the arousal produced by everything described above. We remained there for some time and afterward returned home. I awakened my son, may his lamp shine, to recite Chatzos; afterward we studied our fixed lessons. I then lay down to sleep for a short while and arose to pray vasikin. The arousal of the preceding night was still with me. I also prepared a copy of Likutay Moharan together with Sichos and Hisorerus [Conversations and Arousal] to give the groom as a gift - the discourse-gift called a derashah geshank, as it is customary to give such a gift, etc.
