Segment 1
HE:
וביום שני אחר עבודתינו הלכה זוגתי תחיה להקליניקה בהדסה, ודברה עם הדוקטור רבינוויץ ואמר לה שהמצב הוא כמו שהיה, ונפלה בדעתה מה יהא מזה ומתי יהא שינוי לטובה ומה יהא התכלית מזה, והכלל שנשאר בדעתה לא לילך עוד לשאול להדוקטור משלום הילד, כי מה יתן לה ומה יוסיף לה מזה, כי אין לה שום פעולה מזה.

EN:
On Monday, after our devotions, my wife, may she live, went to the Hadassah clinic and spoke with Dr. Rabinowitz. He told her that the condition remained as it had been. Her spirit fell: What would become of this? When would there be a change for the better? What would be the ultimate outcome? In sum, she resolved not to go again to ask the physician about the child, for what would this give or add to her? She could accomplish nothing through it.

וגם נגמר אצלינו ביחד כי על כל פנים אין אנו יכולים עכשיו ליקח הילד מבית החולים, כי יראים אנו לעשות דבר שכזה, על כל פנים כל פעם שנלך לבית החולים לבקר הילד ניקח אתנו מעט יין טוב מתוק וישן בתוך בקבוק, וניתן לו כף קטנה בסתר שלא יראה איש. וכן עבר עלינו יום השני גם כן בעבודתינו בתפלה ביום ובלילה, וביום שלישי אחר עבודתינו עד הצהרים הלכנו לבית החולים, ומידי הילוכינו בשוק לקחתי אצל מיודעי מוכר יין מעט יין יקר בבקבוק קטן, מהיין שלקחתי על ארבע כוסות על פסח, וגם כן היה קשה לי אצלו ליקח כי אביו לא רוצה ליקח מיין של פסח, ורק כוונתי הזמן שהיה בנו בחנות ולקחתי אצלו היין לרפואה בעל כרחו, וכן לקחה זוגתי אתה כף קטן.

We also resolved together that, in any event, we could not then take the child out of the hospital, for we were afraid to do such a thing. Nevertheless, whenever we went to the hospital to visit him, we would bring a small quantity of good, sweet, aged wine in a bottle and secretly give him a small spoonful, so that no one would see. Monday likewise passed over us in our devotions and prayer, by day and by night. On Tuesday, after performing our devotions until midday, we went to the hospital. As we passed through the market, I obtained from an acquaintance who sold wine a small quantity of costly wine in a little bottle—the same wine I had purchased for the four cups on Pesach. It was difficult even to obtain this from him, for his father did not wish anyone to take from the Pesach wine. I therefore chose a time when the son was alone in the shop and, for medicinal purposes, prevailed upon him to give me the wine despite his reluctance. My wife likewise brought a small spoon.

Segment 3
HE:
והלכנו כל הדרך ודברנו כדת מה לעשות בהילד, ואם יהיה לנו מסירת נפש וליקח אותו לביתינו כי אין לדבר גבול, כי אין נעשה שינוי בו לטובה ובביתינו אנו מצפים שיהא הולך וטוב, ואני אמרתי לה כי אנו צריכים לחכות להשם יתברך כמו שעשה עמנו טובות בזה החודש בזה המקום, שילדה לחיים ושלום והיינו ברוך השם שמחים כמוצא שלל רב, כן יעזור לנו השם יתברך גם עתה ואולי גם בזה החודש עצמו, וניקח אותו בחיים ושלום לביתינו.

EN:
Throughout the journey we deliberated in earnest over what should be done with the child and whether we should exercise self-sacrifice and take him into our home, for the matter appeared to have no limit. There had been no change for the better, whereas we expected that at home he would steadily improve. I told her that we had to wait for Hashem, may He be blessed. In this same month and in this same place He had dealt kindly with us when she gave birth alive and well, and, blessed be Hashem, we had rejoiced like one who finds great spoil. So, too, Hashem, may He be blessed, would help us now—perhaps even in this very month—and we would take him home alive and well.

Segment 4
HE:
וכן דברנו כל הדרך מניסי השם יתברך ונפלאותיו אתנו מכל הזמן, וגם בזה הילד בעצמו שיחיה בעת שהיתה מעוברת מאתו ונחלתה, וכבר היינו מיואשים לגמרי מהעובר ולא ידענו לשית עצות לנפשינו, והתיישבתי לקיים מאמר רבינו ז״ל בספר המדות לישא עליה מגנעט, וכן עשיתי וקניתי מגנעט וקשרה עליה.

EN:
Throughout the road we spoke of the miracles and wonders Hashem, may He be blessed, had performed for us over the years, including those connected with this child himself, may he live. When my wife had been pregnant with him, she became ill. We had already despaired completely of the unborn child and did not know how to establish counsel within our souls. I resolved to fulfill the teaching of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, in Sefer HaMidos, that a magnet should be carried upon her. I therefore purchased a magnet, and she tied it upon herself.

Segment 5
HE:
וגם נדרתי נדר כשיעזור השם יתברך ותוליד הוולד של קיימא בעתו ובזמנו, אעשה סעודה מיוחדת בשלישי למילה בשביל כל העניים של עיר העתיקה, ואספר מעשי ה׳ ונפלאותיו, וכן הוה שעזרני השם יתברך בנסים ונפלאות, ואחר עוד כמה חודשים ילדה בעתו ובזמנו גם כן בנסים, ועשינו סעודה גדולה כנ״ל ביום שלישי למילה מלבד ביום מילתו.

EN:
I also made a vow that, when Hashem, may He be blessed, would help and she would give birth to a viable child at the proper time, I would make a special meal on the third day after the circumcision for all the poor people of the Old City and relate the deeds and wonders of Hashem. This indeed occurred. Hashem, may He be blessed, helped me with miracles and wonders, and after several more months she gave birth at the proper time, likewise through miracles. In addition to the meal on the day of his circumcision, we made the aforementioned large meal on the third day after it.

Segment 6
HE:
וכן הבטחנו גם עתה כשיעזור השם יתברך וניקח אותו לביתינו בחיים ושלום, נעשה ביום שבת קודש קידוש עבור אנשי שלומינו כמו שעושין "שלום זכרי׳ בשבת לפני המילה, וגם לעשות סעודה ביום ט״ו תמוז הלולא של האורח חיים הקדוש, וגם תיכף כשנחזור אתו מבית החולים ראשית לילך אתו להכותל מערבי ולחלק כסף לכל העניים שעל הדרך ושבשם, וגם לנסוע אתו לקבר רחל ולהדליק שמן זית, וגם לעשות פאות במירון ולעשות סעודה להזכיר נסי השם יתברך שעשה לו נס במקום הזה, וכן דברנו והזכרנו כל זאת מכבר.

EN:
We likewise pledged now that when Hashem, may He be blessed, would help us and we would take the child home alive and well, we would make a Kiddush on the holy Shabbos for our fellow Breslover Chassidim, as is done at a Shalom Zachar on the Shabbos before a circumcision. We would also make a meal on the fifteenth of Tammuz, the hillula of the holy Ohr HaChaim. Immediately upon returning with him from the hospital, we would first take him to the Western Wall and distribute money to every poor person along the road and at the Wall. We would likewise take him to Rachel’s Tomb and kindle olive oil there; make payos for him in Meron; and make a meal there to recount the miracles Hashem, may He be blessed, had performed for him at that place. We had already spoken of and recalled all this previously.

Segment 7

ובאנו לבית החולים ועד שנכנסנו למעלה וחיכינו אצל השלחן קטן בפרוזדור ועינינו לשמים שנזכה לקיים מה שדברנו, ונכנסנו וראינו אותו באותו המצב וכו׳, ונגשנו אצלו וישבנו מעט וכווננו איזה זמן שלא היה שום אחות בחדר, ואחזתי הבקבוק עם היין והיא שפכה לתוך הכף הקטן ושפכה לתוך פיו, וממש החיינו אותו ורצה עוד ונתנה לו עוד מעט, וראינו תיכף שיש לו שינוי לטובה מזה, וישבנו עד שנצרכנו לילך ונתנה לו עוד פעם כף קטן וממש החיינו את נפשו.

We reached the hospital. After we had entered and ascended, we waited beside the small table in the corridor, our eyes directed toward Heaven that we should merit fulfilling what we had discussed. We entered and saw him in the same condition, and so forth. We approached and sat beside him for a short while. We waited for a time when no nurse was present in the room. I held the bottle of wine; my wife poured some into the small spoon and then poured it into his mouth. It quite literally revived him. He wanted more, and she gave him another small amount. We immediately saw that it produced a change for the better. We remained until it was necessary to leave, and then she gave him one more small spoonful, which quite literally revived his soul.

Segment 8
HE:
אבל בעת ששפכה לתוך פיו נכנסה אחות אחת, ונתבהלה מזה זוגתי תחיה ושפכה מעט על הכר ונעשה מעט אדום כמו דם, ואמרתי לה כי אסור להניח כך הכר כי יחשבו כי הילד הקיא זאת חס וחלילה ויחשבוהו לחולה יותר, ועל כן הפכנו הכר על צד השני שלא יראו זאת, והלכנו יחד בשמחה והיה לנו נחת מה שעשינו זאת עם היין, כי ראינו בעינינו כי פעל עליו לטובה והחיה עצמו בזה.

EN:
While she was pouring it into his mouth, however, a nurse entered. My wife, may she live, became alarmed and spilled a small quantity upon the pillow, which became somewhat red like blood. I told her that we must not leave the pillow in that condition, for they might think that the child had vomited it, God forbid, and would regard him as still more ill. We therefore turned the pillow over so that they would not see it. We left together joyfully and derived satisfaction from what we had done with the wine, for we saw with our own eyes that it had acted upon him favorably and that he had revived himself through it.

Segment 9
HE:
ונכנסנו לקבר שמעון הצדיק זכותו יגן עלינו אמן ובקשנו שם בקשתינו ותפלותינו, ומשם לחותני ז״ל וספרנו לו מזה ואיך שנתנו לו מעט יין, ופגשנו בלכתינו חזרה להעיר את זוגתו של ר׳ דוד יוליס הני׳ל, וסיפרה איך שזה איזה ימים שלקחה הילד בעל כרחו מבית החולים, ושמצבו יותר טוב הרבה מבית החולים, ושהולך וטוב יותר, ומזה חשקה נפשינו ביותר ליקח אותו לביתינו, כי היה אצלינו ברור כשמש כי בכמה פרטים היה מבריא ביותר.

We entered the tomb of Shimon HaTzaddik, may his merit protect us, amen, and presented our petitions and prayers there. From there we went to my father-in-law, of blessed memory, and told him what had occurred and how we had given the child a small quantity of wine. On our return to the city we encountered the wife of the aforementioned Rabbi David Yulis. She related that several days earlier she had taken her child from the hospital against the staff’s wishes; his condition was now far better than it had been in the hospital and was steadily improving. This intensified our desire to take our own child home, for it was as clear to us as the sun that in several respects he would recover more fully there.

Segment 10
HE:
אבל איך לוקחים ילד חלש כזה ונגוע כזה שלא יכולים ליגע אפילו בגופו מחמת חולשתו ופצעיו מהזריקות, ושזה אחריות גדול ליקח אותו לביתינו בלי רצונם, ובפרט שאין ביכלתינו להחיות אותו במאכלים טובים, מפני עניותינו, ועל כן היינו ביחד נבוכים בדעתינו מאד מה לעשות, כי כך להניח מר לנו, וליקח לבתינו גם כן קשה מאד, ונשאר לנו רק להיות שב ואל תעשה ולהשליך יהבינו על השם יתברך שכאשר עזר לנו עד הנה לא יעזוב אותנו ונחכה עוד בזה.

EN:
Yet how could one take home a child so weak and afflicted that, because of his weakness and the sores from the injections, one could not even touch his body? It would be a great responsibility to take him into our home without the hospital’s consent. In particular, because of our poverty, we lacked the means to sustain him with good food. We were therefore exceedingly confused together as to what should be done. Leaving him there in this manner was bitter to us, but taking him home was likewise exceedingly difficult. Nothing remained for us except to refrain from action and cast our burden upon Hashem, may He be blessed, trusting that just as He had helped us until then, He would not abandon us. We would wait a little longer.
