Segment 1
HE:
ובחצות בקשתי הרבה ואמרתי שיר השירים ותפלות ובקשות, ובבוקר יום ראשון אחר התפלה ועשינו עבודתינו וגם הגורל ואחר כך פדיונות ותפלות ובקשות ואמירת שמות הצדיקים והתבודדות בפה ולב, וכן אחרנו בזה עד סמוך לחצות היום, ודברה זוגתי עמי לילך לבקר הילד אבל אני נלאתי כבר נשוא וגמרתי בדעתי לבלי לילך.

EN:
At midnight I pleaded abundantly and recited Shir HaShirim, prayers, and petitions. On Sunday morning after prayer, we performed our devotions, including the lot, followed by pidyonos, prayers, petitions, the recitation of the names of the tzaddikim, and hisbodedus with mouth and heart. We remained occupied with this until near midday. My wife spoke to me about going to visit the child, but I had already become too weary to bear any more and resolved not to go.

Segment 2
HE:
ועל כן הלכה היא לבדה ונסעה עם אוטו ממאה שערים לשם, ונכנסה אצל הילד ואין שום שינוי אצלו, ונתנה לו יין כף קטנה לשתות והחיה את עצמו ממש, ובין כך ראתה איזה שכינה שהיה לה שם ילד וסיפרה להאחות והתחילה לכעוס, אבל זוגתי ענתה כי שקר ענתה בה ורק נתנה להילד איזה חפץ לצחוק.

EN:
She therefore went alone, traveling there by bus from Meah Shearim. She entered to see the child and found no change in him. She gave him a small spoonful of wine to drink, which quite literally revived him. Meanwhile, a certain woman whose child was also there saw her and reported the matter to the nurse, who began to grow angry. My wife answered that the woman had spoken falsely and that she had merely given the child some object with which to amuse himself.

Segment 3
HE:
והכלל שישבה שם זוגתי השעה, ויותר לא יכלה ליתן לו יין כי יראה שלא יהיה לה עסק מזה עם האחיות, והלכה משם בלי חמדה כי לא ראתה שום שינוי בילד, וגם אמרו לה שם האחיות "אותו המצב".

EN:
In sum, my wife remained there for the allotted hour. She could not give him any more wine, for she feared becoming involved in a dispute with the nurses. She left without joy, because she had seen no change whatsoever in the child. The nurses likewise told her, “The same condition.”

Segment 4
HE:
והלכה משם בלב נשבר, והלכה רגלי עם עוד אנשים ונשים שהלכו חזרה רגלי, ונכנסה משם לציון שמעון הצדיק זכותו יגן עלינו אמן ופרשה שם שיחתה ומר לבה לפני השי״ת שיחוס עלינו ויאמר די לצרותינו.

EN:
She departed with a broken heart and walked back with other men and women who were likewise returning on foot. From there she entered the tomb of Shimon HaTzaddik, may his merit protect us, amen, and poured out her conversation and the bitterness of her heart before Hashem, may He be blessed, pleading that He spare us and say to our troubles, “Enough.”

Segment 5
HE:
ונכנסה למאה שערים והיתה אצל חותני ז״ל וסיפרה לו מצב הילד בלי שום שינוי ובלי שום הטבה, ומי יודע כמה יעבור עוד בזה ומה העצה לעשות בזה, אולי ליקח אותו סוף כל סוף במסירות נפש לביתינו אולי יהא יותר טוב בשבילו, אבל אין מי שייעץ עצה בזה ונשארנו אובדי עצות בזה.

EN:
She entered Meah Shearim and visited my father-in-law, of blessed memory. She told him that the child’s condition showed no change and no improvement. Who knew how much longer this would continue, and what counsel could be followed? Perhaps, at long last, we should take him into our home with self-sacrifice; perhaps that would be better for him. Yet no one was able to advise us in the matter, and we remained entirely without counsel.

Segment 6
HE:
ובאתה הביתה במרירות רוח ולא יכולנו לשית עצות בנפשינו כלל בזה מה לעשות, ובכן חזרנו לעשות את שלנו ברוח נמוכה ובלב נשברה בתפלה ובקשה לפני השי״ת, והיינו אצל הכותל המערבי בבקשה ותפלה לפני השי״ת, ועוררתי אנשי שלומינו כמו תמיד שיזכירו לטובה ויעוררו רחמים, ונתתי על פדיונות וגם עשיתי עוד פעם הגורל לפנות ערב, ובערב גם כן בקשנו להשי״ת.

EN:
She returned home in bitterness of spirit. We could establish no counsel within our souls concerning what we should do. We therefore returned to doing what lay within our power, with lowly spirits and broken hearts, through prayer and petition before Hashem, may He be blessed. We went to the Western Wall to pray and plead before Hashem, may He be blessed. As always, I urged our fellow Breslover Chassidim to mention the child for good and arouse mercy. I contributed money for pidyonos and toward evening again performed the lot. In the evening we likewise pleaded before Hashem, may He be blessed.

Segment 7
HE:
ובקימת חצות שהוא מסוגל כמו פדיון פרשתי שיחתי הרבה לפני השי״ת ובמר לב ובכי, ואמרתי תהלים ותפלות ובקשות ושיר השירים קודם אור הבוקר, ואחר התפלה עשיתי הגורל הנ״ל כרגיל וגם הפדיונות ותהלים ותפלות הרבה של רפואה, ואמירת שמות הצדיקים הרבה עם התפלה שאחריה.

EN:
When I arose at midnight—a practice whose efficacy is like that of a pidyon—I poured out my conversation at length before Hashem, may He be blessed, with bitterness of heart and weeping. I recited Tehillim, prayers, and petitions, as well as Shir HaShirim before the light of morning. After prayer I performed the aforementioned lot as usual, together with the pidyonos, Tehillim, many prayers for healing, and the repeated recitation of the names of the tzaddikim with the prayer that follows them.

Segment 8
HE:
והנה בתוך כך ודפקו על הדלת והלכה זוגתי אל הדלת לראות מי דופק, ופתחה הדלת ולא ראתה שום איש, רק שמעה שהאחות מטיפת חלב אמרה למטה אל השכנים, איפה הגברת הורביץ הלא הבאתי לה בשורה טובה כי תלך אל בית החולים ליקח הילד לביתה, והלכה לה לדרכה.

EN:
In the midst of this, someone knocked at the door. My wife went to see who was knocking. She opened the door and saw no one, but heard the nurse from the Tipat Chalav clinic saying downstairs to the neighbors, “Where is Mrs. Horowitz? I have brought her good news: she is to go to the hospital and take the child home.” The nurse then continued on her way.

Segment 9
HE:
והלכה זוגתי תיכף לטיפת חלב ומצאה האחות, ונתנה לה את הצעטיל מבית החולים שתבוא עם מלבושים ליקח הילד לבית, ובאתה לבית עם הצעטיל וביקשה אותי שאלך עמה לבית החולים ליקח הילד לביתינו, אבל לא רציתי כי לא הייתי עדיין אצל כותל המערבי וכבר פנה היום, ועל כן תלך היא בעצמה להביאו מבית החולים.

EN:
My wife immediately went to the Tipat Chalav clinic and found the nurse. The nurse gave her the note from the hospital instructing her to come with clothing and take the child home. My wife returned with the note and asked me to accompany her to the hospital to bring the child home. I did not wish to go, however, because I had not yet been to the Western Wall and the day was already waning. She would therefore go by herself to bring him from the hospital.

Segment 10
HE:
אבל מה מאוד שמח לבינו לשמוע הבשורה הטובה הלזו, ופג לבינו מלהאמין כזאת כי בפתע פתאום יתחדש בשורה כזאת, אחר שאתמול היתה שם ולא היה שום שינוי בהילד, וכבר היה מיואש אצלינו מלצפות לזה אפילו עד אחר כמה שבועות, ובוודאי נרגשים מאד היינו מהבשורה טובה הזאת בפתע פתאום לגמרי בלי שום חיכוי וקיווי לזה.

EN:
How exceedingly our hearts rejoiced upon hearing this favorable news! Our hearts were too faint to believe such a thing: that so suddenly and unexpectedly such news should arise, when only the previous day she had been there and had seen no change in the child. We had already despaired of expecting this even for several more weeks. We were surely profoundly moved by this good news, which had come utterly suddenly, without any prior waiting or expectation.

Segment 11
HE:
וגם כי ראיתי נפלאות השם, כי ממש באותו יום "יום שני בשבת וחמש ועשרים בחודש סיוף׳ בשנה העבר, נולד אצלינו זה הילד היקר נ״י שם בבית החולים, ונתבשרנו בבשורה טובה הלזו שהיה ניסים שילדה אותו בנקל בגודל חולשתה וחולאתה על לחץ דם שהיתה בסכנה גדולה וכו׳, ובוודאי ישמח לבינו מאד על נפלאות השם יתברך וכו׳.

EN:
I also perceived the wonders of Hashem. On precisely that same day—Monday, the twenty-fifth of the month of Sivan—in the previous year, this precious child, may his light shine, had been born to us there in the hospital. We had then received favorable news, for it had been miraculous that, despite her extreme weakness and her illness from high blood pressure, which had placed her in great danger, and so forth, she had given birth to him with ease. Our hearts surely rejoiced exceedingly over the wonders of Hashem, may He be blessed, and so forth.

Segment 12
HE:
והנה היא נזדרזה ולקחה מלבושים של הילד והלכה חוץ לעיר ונכנסה למאה שערים ונסעה עם אחותה לבית החולים, אבל כבר היה לפנות ערב והמשרד היה סגור ועל כן לא רצו האחיות ליתן לה הילד, ורק אמרו שתבוא מחר בעת שהמשרד פתוח, ואז יוכלו ליתן הילד בחתימת ידינו אצל המשרד: כי לקחנו הילד מאתם בחיים ושלום.

EN:
My wife hurried, took the child’s garments, went outside the city, entered Meah Shearim, and traveled with her sister to the hospital. By then, however, it was already toward evening and the office was closed. The nurses therefore refused to give her the child. They told her only that she should return the following day when the office was open. They would then be able to release the child after we signed at the office that we had received him from them alive and well.

Segment 13
HE:
וכמה שהתאמצו ליקח הילד והראו את הפתק מבית החולים שיבואו ליקח את הילד לא הועיל, ורק השיבו כי נבוא ביום מחר כנ״ל ושבה זוגתי לבית, ואני בין כך הייתי אצל כותל המערבי ואמרתי תיקון הכללי ותפלות וכו׳, וחזרתי לביתי וספרה לי זוגתי תחיה כל המעשה.

EN:
No matter how earnestly they endeavored to take the child, and although they showed the note from the hospital instructing them to come and take him, it did not help. The staff replied only that we should come on the following day, as stated above. My wife returned home. In the meantime I had been at the Western Wall, where I recited Tikkun Haklali, prayers, and so forth. I returned home, and my wife, may she live, told me the entire incident.
