Segment 1
HE:
והנה אנחנו כבר היכנו עצמינו לקבל הילד לבית, ודברנו כי נראה שהילד יהא לו מנוחה וגם צריך לראות איזה עצה לכסף להחיות הילד ולהבריאו.

EN:
We had already prepared ourselves to receive the child into our home. We discussed how to arrange that he should have rest and how we might find some means of obtaining money with which to sustain him and restore him to health.

Segment 2
HE:
והנה עבר עלינו הלילה ברוך השם בשמחה, וגם לא עזבנו לעשות עבודתינו כמו קודם באמירת חצות ובקשה לפני השם יתברך ושיר השירים ובראשי חדשיכם, וכן אחר התפלה ביום שלישי עשינו את שלנו בהגורל ותיקון הכללי ותפלות פדיון ותפלות רפואה ושמות הצדיקים, ואכלנו והיכנו עצמינו והלכנו יחד עם המלבושים לבית החולים, והלכנוכל כך בשמחה עד שלבינו נשא את רגלינו ולבינו פחד ורחב.

EN:
Blessed be Hashem, that night passed over us joyfully. Nor did we cease performing our devotions as before: reciting Tikkun Chatzos, pleading before Hashem, may He be blessed, and reciting Shir HaShirim and “And on your New Moons.” On Tuesday after prayer we likewise did what lay within our power through the lot, Tikkun Haklali, prayers of pidyon, prayers for healing, and the names of the tzaddikim. We ate, prepared ourselves, and went together to the hospital with the garments. We walked with such joy that our hearts carried our feet, while our hearts were both fearful and expansive.

Segment 3
HE:
וכן באנו לבית החולים והראנו הפתקא להשוער והניח לנו לכנוס, ועלינו למעלה למחלקת הילדים ונכנסנו אצל הילד וישבנו אצלו, והאחיות הלכו עם הפתקא להמשרד וגמרו בזה מה שצריך לגמור ואנו חיכינו שם.

EN:
We reached the hospital and showed the note to the gatekeeper, who permitted us to enter. We ascended to the children’s ward, entered to see the child, and sat beside him. The nurses took the note to the office and completed whatever formalities had to be completed, while we waited there.

Segment 4
HE:
ובין כך לקחו הילד ועשו לו וריקה והביאו אותו בחזרה למטתו והוא מודאג ועצב כדרכו כל הזמן, ואמרה לו האחות": נפתלי למה אינך שמחי הלא לוקחין אותך הביתה!" והוא שמע ותמה ושתק כבר, והיה שם רופא שבדק הילדים ודברנו עמו ועם האחיות, הנפלאות שעשה לנו השם יתברך עם זה הילד, והרופא הביט בילד ותמה כבר בריא? לוקחין הביתה?.

EN:
Meanwhile they took the child, gave him an injection, and returned him to his bed. As throughout that entire period, he was anxious and sad. The nurse said to him, “Naftali, why are you not happy? They are taking you home!” He heard her, looked astonished, and then became quiet. A physician was there examining the children. We spoke with him and with the nurses about the wonders Hashem, may He be blessed, had performed for us with this child. The physician looked at the child in amazement and asked, “Is he already well? You are taking him home?”

Segment 5
HE:
והאחיות לקחו הילד לבית ורחצו אותו והלבישו אותו המלבושים שלו, ואנחנו ישבנו בפרוזדור אצל השלחן העגול (שהיינו רגילים לישב בו בעת שהיינו באים לבקר הילד, וחיכינו שנוכל לכנס)

EN:
The nurses took the child into another room, bathed him, and dressed him in his own garments. We sat in the corridor beside the round table where we had customarily sat whenever we came to visit the child and waited until we were permitted to enter.

Segment 6
HE:
ודברנו איך היינו רגילים לישב אצל זה השלחן העגול מודאג ומוחשך, ועכשיו ברוך השם שהחיינו וקיימנו והגיענו לזמן הזה שזכינו לזאת, וגם דברנו ביננו איך ובאיזה לב ביום שלישי לפני ששה שבועות בעת שהכנסנו אותו לבית החולים, איך היה לבינו נמוג ונמס ולא האמנו בחייו עד יום המחרת אפילו, וכעת זיכנו השם יתברך ליום הזה עילה ונשמחה בו, ואיך כל הששה שבועות כל המרורות וצער שהיה לנו בכל רגע ורגע עד שכחינו היה כח ברזל לסבול זאת ובנסים גדולים שלא ירדנו מדעתינו, וברוך השם כי לא היה עמלינו לריק וראינו בחוש כי עדיין ה׳ אתנו ושומע קולנו ולא עזבונו.

EN:
We spoke of how we had formerly sat beside that round table, anxious and shrouded in darkness, whereas now, blessed be Hashem, “Who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this time,” we had merited this. We likewise spoke between ourselves of that Tuesday six weeks earlier when we had brought him into the hospital: with what a heart we had done so, how our hearts had dissolved and melted, and how we had not believed that he would live even until the following day. Yet now Hashem, may He be blessed, had enabled us to reach “this day that Hashem has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” We recalled all the bitterness and anguish of those six weeks, which we had suffered at every single moment, and how our strength had needed to be iron to endure it. It had been through great miracles that we had not lost our sanity. Blessed be Hashem, our toil had not been in vain. We perceived directly that Hashem was still with us, heard our voice, and had not abandoned us.

Segment 7
HE:
וגם היה שם הדוקטור רבינוויץ ודברנו אליו בשמחה": דוקטור רבינוויץ הלא אנחנו לוקחים הילד כבר לביתנו, ברוך השם כי זכינו לזאת", ונפטרנו ממנו לשלום ולא ענה לנו כלל ולא הכרנו אצלו שום שמחה והיה לנו הדבר לפלא.

EN:
Dr. Rabinowitz was also present. We said to him joyfully, “Dr. Rabinowitz, see—we are already taking the child home! Blessed be Hashem that we have merited this.” We took leave of him in peace, but he gave us no answer whatsoever and we discerned no joy in him. This seemed wondrous to us.

Segment 8
HE:
והנה רצינו לקיים מה שדברנו בפינו כי נעשה איזה סעודה בשביל האחיות והרופאים, כי יהיה להם לזכר ולהודות להשם יתברך על הנס מבריאות הילד, אבל לא השגנו שם בחנות שאצל השער שום דבר לקנות רק שוקולד, וקנינו שם שוקולד ונתנו להאחיות ולא רצו לקבל עד שבקשנו מהם וקבלו ושמחו בזה.

EN:
We wished to fulfill what we had said—that we would make some sort of meal for the nurses and physicians so that they would have a memorial and give thanks to Hashem, may He be blessed, for the miracle of the child’s recovery. At the shop near the gate, however, we could obtain nothing to purchase except chocolate. We bought chocolate and gave it to the nurses. They initially refused to accept it, but after we pleaded with them, they accepted it and rejoiced over it.

Segment 9
HE:
והנה כבר הלבישו הילד המלבושים שלנו ואני קבלתיו בידי, והגברת הראשית נתנה לנו כרטיס לטפת חלב לידע איך להתנהג עם הילד, וכתבה שם החולאת שלו, וגם נתנה לנו פתקא המאכלים שצריך ליתן לו: מרק בשר, חלב, ועוד כמה דברים להחיותו, וגם צוותה עלינו שכל יום צריך להביא הילד להקליניקה של הדסה אצל הדוקטור רבינוויץ לבקר את הילד.

EN:
The child had already been dressed in our own garments, and I received him into my arms. The head nurse gave us a card for the Tipat Chalav clinic, so that its staff would know how to care for the child, and she recorded his illness upon it. She also gave us a written list of the foods we were to give him: meat broth, milk, and several other things with which to sustain him. She further instructed us to bring the child every day to the Hadassah clinic, to Dr. Rabinowitz, so that he could examine him.

Segment 10
HE:
והבטחנו לקיים זאת אבל במחשבתינו חשבנו איך נוכל לקיים זאת ואנחנו יודעים כי דחוקים אנחנו כנ״ל ואין בידינו אפילו לחם צר ומכל שכן מה שהוא צריך כעת, ואף על פי כן בטחנו בהשם יתברך כי לא יעזבנו ולא יטשנו, וגם אמרתי לה כי אף על פי שאין טבעי כלל לבקש עזר מאנשים, אבל בשביל להחיות הילד הזה כי סכנת נפשות הוא וכי כל כך סבלנו בו, אעשה כל העצות לבקש מיד כל מי שאוכל שיחמול עלינו ויחיה הילד הזה.

EN:
We promised to fulfill this. In our minds, however, we wondered how we could do so. We knew that we were in straitened circumstances, as stated above, and did not possess even meager bread, how much less the things he now required. Nevertheless, we trusted in Hashem, may He be blessed, that He would neither abandon nor forsake us. I also told my wife that although it was not at all my nature to ask people for assistance, nevertheless, in order to sustain this child—since it was a matter of mortal danger and we had suffered so much over him—I would employ every means and ask at once of everyone I could that they have compassion upon us and help preserve this child’s life.
