EN: On the night of that wedding, as we sat amid the joy and comic merriment described above, and I was seated among the members of our fellowship as stated above, one of the lay members of our fellowship approached me: Rabbi Chaim Baruch Tarnovsky, may his lamp shine, a faithful friend of mine. He whispered in my ear that he had an exceedingly suitable match for my son, may his lamp shine. He spoke with me about a match with the daughter of Rabbi Noson, a grandson of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, and praised the match to me exceedingly, saying that the girl possessed every virtue, quite apart from the fact that she was a granddaughter of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, etc., etc. EN: The matter was as follows. In truth, for several years I had already been thinking, yearning, longing, and passionately desiring to arrange a match for my son, may his lamp shine. I was seeking, however, a suitable match among the members of our fellowship, with a family in whose home he could openly be a Breslover Chassid and who would be content for him to devote himself to Torah and avodah even if, Heaven forbid, he would have to live a life of privation, Heaven forbid. For the entire aim of both me and my wife, may she live, was that my son, may his lamp shine, should continually devote himself to Torah and the service of Hashem and not become a man of the marketplace. That would be an exceedingly great loss for him, for he is, ben poras Yosef [a formula of blessing against the evil eye], possessed of an exceptionally sharp and incisive mind, and has the capacity to become a gaon and a true great in Torah - even a gadol hador [leading Torah authority of the generation] (as several rabbis here have testified concerning him, etc.). EN: I might already have arranged another match for him, but I longed to join in marriage with the family line of Rabbainu, of blessed memory. Rabbi Noson, who had come from Poland, had been my friend and had held me in esteem since the time I was in Poland. In particular, his father, Rabbi Shimshon, of blessed memory, and I had been exceedingly dear and faithful friends. Had he still been alive, he would have pressed his son to make the match immediately, without any delay. Yet I had wondered how the matter could ever come about, since he lived in Poland. I had exerted myself repeatedly to enable him to come, but had not succeeded; and in the recent period it had become still more difficult to come from Poland to the Holy Land. EN: It was only through the power of will and desire, prayer, and giving verbal expression to one's yearnings and longings (as explained in Likutay Moharan, lesson 31) that the matter came about. I heard from members of our fellowship that efforts were being made to bring him to the Holy Land. Many miracles and wonders occurred until the matter was completed and passed from potential into actuality: he arrived in the Holy Land several days before the war. Had he been delayed a few more days, he could no longer have come, and who knows what might have happened to him and his household, Heaven forbid. EN: When Hashem helped him come here with his household, my yearnings and passionate longings began to intensify more and more, because the enormous hindrances described above had already been broken. Yet I had neither an opening through which to broach the subject nor any counsel as to how to enter into the matter or speak of it. Hashem helped, however: several members of our fellowship were aroused of their own accord and began saying that it would be fitting and proper to make this match between us, etc. They had already spoken to me of it and had praised my son, may his lamp shine, before him. The avreich Nesanel Tefilinsky likewise spoke with me about it and told me that he approved of my matching my son, may his lamp shine, with the daughter of Rabbi Noson mentioned above. He had already spoken to him about it. Although Rabbi Noson remained far from the idea, he said, one must nevertheless work toward it. EN: Rabbi Avraham, may his lamp shine, and his wife were likewise aroused. They urged me to make this match, spoke with him about it, and occupied themselves with it extensively. When I saw that Hashem was placing words in the mouths of people to act in this matter, I rejoiced, and my yearnings and longings for it intensified still more. Yet the hindrances continued to prevail very powerfully. From his side, he remained far from the idea, saying, “How can two dead people dance together?” - that is, how can two poor families marry one another? He was seeking and desired a wealthy match that would be advantageous for his daughter, etc. EN: There was likewise the hindrance on my side: how could one conclude such a matter and join in marriage with a poor man, without a proper dowry and gifts, when a match could be made for so handsome and pleasant a young man, ben poras Yosef, and so accomplished a Torah scholar, through which he would receive a fitting dowry and gifts? And how could I bring my wife, may she live, my father-in-law, may his lamp shine, and his entire family to agree? I was literally afraid to allow the matter to leave my mouth before them. The matter therefore still appeared exceedingly remote to me, while only my own yearning and desire grew stronger. EN: Hashem then arranged that on one occasion, when I came to the home of Rabbi Avraham, may his lamp shine, I found Rabbi Noson there. Rabbi Avraham and his wife immediately began speaking openly before both of us about the matter: that it was fitting and proper for us to make a match together, etc. Rabbi Noson refused, however, because favorable matches involving money were being proposed to him, etc. He would consider it only if I possessed a respectable sum of money to give them, so that they would not be left entirely empty-handed. I therefore saw that, from his side, the matter was exceedingly remote. He was then occupied with another match and was close to concluding it. EN: When I came home, I girded my loins and began speaking with my wife in the manner of a story and a jest, describing how this match had been proposed to me, etc. She became exceedingly angry with me. She did not wish even to hear of it; even if the matter depended upon her life, she would not consent - especially to a poor and destitute man, etc. I therefore resolved not to speak of it further and to abandon hope of it, etc. EN: I saw that the matter quite literally touched upon her very life. I saw that the hindrances on my side were as vast as the distance from heaven to earth, apart from the hindrances on his side described above. This caused me grief and suffering. Yet I had already accustomed myself not to be affected by any kind of hindrance and not to despair of any matter. I knew within myself that the matter still depended upon desire, yearning, and abundant prayer, etc. EN: Several days passed and the time of the wedding described above, of members of our fellowship, arrived (the bride was a friend and companion of Rabbi Noson's daughter). Before the chuppah, while there was still time, I was at Rabbi Avraham's home. He again spoke with me, urging me to exert myself to make the match and not to look at the money. He told me that whenever members of our fellowship had encountered such a prospect - a match with the family line of Rabbainu, of blessed memory - they would quite literally have covered the bride or groom who descended from Rabbainu, of blessed memory, in gold, without looking at money at all. Whatever was requested they would give with a generous eye and great joy, etc., etc. EN: Afterward I went to the wedding, where I met Rabbi Noson mentioned above, but we did not speak of the matter at all, only of other subjects, etc. The matter nevertheless burned in my heart, and I merely waited for Hashem, etc. As we sat at the wedding, etc., as described above, Rabbi Chaim Baruch, one of the members of our fellowship mentioned above, approached me and spoke to me about it as stated above. He praised the match to me exceedingly and told me that he had been in Rabbi Noson's home and had been deeply impressed to see the girl's refined conduct and piety, etc. She was willing to marry a yeshivah student, etc. They told him of the matches being proposed to her. That very night they had been close to concluding the other match with her, but he overturned the entire matter. He said that money was not the essential consideration, and that the difference between that young man and my son was like the distance between heaven and earth: my son, may his lamp shine, was exceptional, great in Torah and in the Chassidus of Rabbainu, pleasant and handsome, and possessed every virtue, etc. (For he understood and recognized the qualities of my son, may his lamp shine.) EN: In sum, he reversed their view of the matter from one extreme to the other. They had been exceedingly far from considering my match, while the other match had been close to conclusion that very night. When they asked his opinion, he told them what he understood (for he loved my son with a soul-deep love and recognized his qualities). He said that, had he had a daughter, he would have taken my son as a son-in-law and given him all his possessions, etc. In sum, he brought the prospect of the match with my son near to their hearts. He also spoke to me at very great length, urging me to exert myself greatly to make the match, because the girl possessed every virtue: she was exceptional, and my son, may his lamp shine, was likewise exceptional, etc. I should therefore look at nothing else, but should do it. EN: I thought to myself, however: I am certainly willing; the matter depends only upon my wife, and with her one cannot speak of it at all, as stated above. Nevertheless, I received some strengthening from this, for I saw that the hindrances on one side had eased somewhat, and presumably Hashem would help on the other side as well, etc. My yearnings and longings also increased still more and more. EN: After the wedding, when we had returned to our home - and after we had been at the Western Wall at Chatzos, as stated above - the next morning I considered what counsel to devise and how to speak with my wife about the matter. It was exceedingly difficult for me to speak with her, for I was very afraid. Nevertheless, during the meal I mustered courage. In the course of recounting how the wedding had passed, I told her how this man from among the members of our fellowship had approached me and described the match; how exceedingly he had praised the girl for every virtue; and how, if his son were of marriageable age, he would have given all his possessions in order that his son might take this girl as his wife, etc. (This man was a bar samcha [a person of recognized authority] and was esteemed both in her eyes and in the eyes of Rabbi Noson, etc., for he was no idler, but a man of great understanding, etc.) EN: She answered me somewhat negatively, but not as before. With Hashem's help, the matter had made a powerful impression upon her. She spoke only about particular details of the prospective dowry and gifts, etc. I rejoiced greatly at this, for I quite literally saw a transformation of nature: how her attitude toward the matter had changed, etc. EN: Afterward I went outside the city and met on the road Rabbi Chaim Baruch mentioned above, one of the members of our fellowship. He spoke with me about the matter at length and related the entire account of how he had occupied himself with awakening interest in the match for my son, may his lamp shine. I told him what had occurred with my wife, may she live, and how her attitude had changed from what it had been, etc. In sum, he strengthened me to exert myself to bring this treasure into my home, etc. EN: My desire and yearnings certainly grew still stronger and stronger, etc. Yet Rabbi Noson wanted them to have money - and from where could I obtain money? I took counsel within myself that I would give copies of my Likutay Moharan, which perhaps they could find a way to sell, etc. EN: The matter, however, still remained pending and had not been concluded, etc. May Hashem bring the matter to a favorable conclusion. May I soon merit arranging for my son, may his lamp shine, a suitable and worthy match with his destined mate, and may I marry him off at a good and auspicious hour, amid abundance. Amen.
