EN: I also began to consider fulfilling what I had pledged at that time: that when Hashem, may He be blessed, helped us, I would return to complete the days I had wished to spend in Meron. When the child’s condition had improved slightly in the hospital before Shavuos, I had wished to travel but had not done so. Afterward, when his condition again deteriorated, I regretted not having traveled and attributed the deterioration to this. Now, therefore, that Hashem, may He be blessed, had helped us, that we had already merited having the child in our home, and that we had made a celebration and Kiddush on that Shabbos over the kindness and deliverance granted him, I was compelled to undertake the journey to Meron immediately. EN: The journey was exceedingly difficult in my eyes at that time, for all roads are presumed to involve danger. This was particularly so because the blackout had already begun, as stated above, and there was fear of enemy aircraft. We had heard that incidents of gunfire had already occurred in Haifa, and many people had begun to come and reside in Yerushalayim. I surely did not desire to endanger myself through the journey. Nevertheless, I was compelled to fulfill my vow. Moreover, through the journey I would gain the true and eternal benefit one merits at the tomb of the Godly Tanna Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit protect us, amen. EN: I began searching to see whether I could find someone with whom to travel together, either among our fellow Breslover Chassidim or among other people who traveled from time to time, but I found no one. I took courage within myself and traveled alone on Wednesday. I reached Haifa, and while traveling through the city I saw smoke still rising from the oil tanks as a result of the bombs with which the Germans had bombed the refineries. I was exceedingly afraid to remain there, but I was compelled to wait at the Egged station for a bus traveling to Tzefas. EN: Meanwhile I saw there Mendel, son of Rabbi Sender, of blessed memory. I spoke with him concerning the works of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, in his father’s estate, asking that he give them to our beis midrash for the elevation of his father’s soul. Rabbi Sender, of blessed memory, one of our fellow Breslover Chassidim in Tzefas, had passed away not long before. Mendel replied that he had already given the books as a gift to certain friends. I asked him to tell me who those people were, so that perhaps I could purchase the books from them. He replied that these people would not sell them. In sum, he refused to tell me who they were, and I left him crushed in spirit. EN: I sat for those hours in the Egged station in Haifa, waiting with yearning eyes for us to leave that place. Every moment seemed to me like several hours. At last, with the help of Hashem, may He be blessed, the bus from Tzefas arrived. I boarded it, took a seat, and waited until the bus departed. My mind was divided as to whether I should disembark at Meron or continue to Tzefas. Perhaps the courtyard in Meron was locked; what would I do if I remained outside for the night? I could establish no counsel within myself concerning this. I also asked people on the bus whether they knew if Meron was open or closed. EN: In sum, I reflected that it would be more proper for me to travel directly to Tzefas rather than place myself in a doubtful situation. Perhaps the place was closed and I would thereby experience needless anguish and suffering, God forbid. I therefore continued directly to Tzefas. I entered the city close to evening and went to the hachnasas orchim lodging house to spend the night. EN: I went to the Ashkenazi synagogue of the Arizal, of blessed memory, and prayed Minchah and Maariv there. I learned that Chacham Aharon, who was ordinarily in Meron, was then in Tzefas, working there for his livelihood, and that the attendant Moshe Deri was likewise there. Meron was indeed closed at that time. I derived satisfaction from having traveled directly to Tzefas, for had I disembarked at Meron, I would have suffered needless anguish and difficulty in searching for a taxi traveling to Tzefas or in walking there on foot, and so forth.
