EN: In the meantime I learned the identity of the man who had obtained the books of Rabbi Sender, of blessed memory. I resolved to go to him, see which of Rabbainu’s works he possessed, and perhaps purchase them from him. After Maariv I went to spend the night in the hachnasas orchim lodging house. I ate the evening meal there in darkness because of the blackout; no lamp burned at all. I also went to Chacham Aharon to ask whether he might travel to Meron. He replied that he could not, for he was compelled to work that week. EN: I was therefore compelled to go to the attendant Rabbi Moshe Deri and speak with him. He told me that he could give me the key and that I could travel by myself, but perhaps I would not be able to open the door, since even he found it difficult to open. If he himself traveled, I would pay him one shilling in addition to his travel expenses; from another person he would have taken several shillings for this. I told him to travel with me. He answered, “Good. Tomorrow morning we will travel together.” EN: Early in the morning I went to the mikvah there and prayed Shacharis. The man who possessed the aforementioned books was also present. He greeted me and asked whether I wished to purchase works of Rabbainu, of blessed memory. I answered that I did. He told me to come to his home, where we would discuss the matter. EN: I went to the cemetery in Tzefas, to the tomb of the Arizal and the other holy graves, and recited Tikkun Haklali, prayers, and petitions. From there I hurried to the hachnasas orchim lodging house and ate the morning meal. I went to the attendant Moshe Deri so that he might travel with me to Meron. I was compelled to wait a short while until he had eaten. We then went to the bus and sat aboard the bus traveling to Haifa by way of Meron. I paid his fare, as stated above. We disembarked on the road to Meron and ascended the mountain on foot until we reached the courtyard. He opened the gate with the key, and we entered the courtyard. EN: He began attempting to open the beis midrash, but this was exceedingly difficult and he could not open it. I tried to open it but was wholly unable to do so. He tried again and, after a short time and with great strength and exertion, opened the door. We entered the sacred and awesome beis midrash. I immediately entered the inner chamber of the tomb of the Godly Tanna Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit protect us, amen, and kissed the holy tomb. EN: The attendant Moshe Deri asked what I wished to do—whether to return that day or spend the night in Meron. I could establish no counsel within myself and answered that I would consider the matter. He went to the village among the Arabs and told me that he would return before the bus departed for Tzefas. EN: I recited Tikkun Haklali together with its prayer and poured out personal conversation and verbal confession with weeping and supplication. I offered thanksgiving for the kindnesses Hashem, may He be blessed, had performed for us from Lag BaOmer until then. I recalled the condition and circumstances in which I had stood there on Lag BaOmer and the state of my heart at that time, and how Hashem, may He be blessed, had helped me so that I now stood there with an entirely different heart, giving thanks for His kindness and truth. EN: I recited prayers, engaged in hisbodedus, and completed the whole of Tehillim, remaining there for several hours. I likewise pleaded for a short while at the tomb of Rabbi Elazar, the son of Rabbi Shimon, and at the tomb of Rabbi Yitzchak in the courtyard. Afterward I walked around the entire courtyard and all its rooms, searching for the possessions we had forgotten and lost on Lag BaOmer in our great haste, when we had departed as though from Egypt. I found nothing. EN: I only reflected upon and recalled all the anguish and suffering we had experienced here in this place and there in that place: in the courtyard, where I had paced with the child in my arms and my heart had been bitter—more bitter than death; and upstairs in the room, where the child had lain like one dead while I was wholly without counsel as to what to do. Now I walked through all the aforementioned places and offered praise and thanksgiving to Hashem, may He be blessed, Who had had compassion upon us and brought us forth from darkness to light and from death to life, and so forth: “Were our mouths as full of song as the sea,” and so forth. EN: Who can assess in his mind the magnitude of my joy and gladness when I recalled our condition on Lag BaOmer and all that had passed from then until now? I nearly wept from joy and from praise of Hashem, may He be blessed. Through this we perceived that Hashem was still with us, desired us, and that Israel was not bereft, God forbid: “In my distress I called, and He answered me.” EN: Thus I spent the time in the service of Hashem with vitality and in hisbodedus at the tomb of the Godly Tanna Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit protect us, amen. Afterward the attendant Moshe Deri returned and asked whether I wished to travel to Tzefas or spend the night there in Meron. I resolved to return to Tzefas, for I was hurrying to reach my home because of the child’s weakness. How could I remain far from him? Moreover, at such a time it was proper to be at home rather than on the road, for all roads are presumed dangerous. I also wished already to see the works of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, in the possession of the aforementioned man, to determine whether I could purchase them. EN: In sum, I answered that I wished to return to Tzefas. I remained a little longer at the holy tomb and took leave of it with powerful yearning and longing and with great love and affection. We descended to the road. When the bus from Haifa arrived, we boarded it and traveled to Tzefas. We reached Tzefas, may it be built and established, and I hurried to the aforementioned man to see the books. He did not wish to show them to me, saying that he needed to search for them one by one, and attempted to postpone me until another day. EN: I told him that on the following day I was compelled to travel home for the holy Shabbos and therefore had to see them immediately. After much urging, he entered a certain room with me and showed me the works of Rabbainu, of blessed memory. I was astonished that they were so few, for I knew that Rabbi Sender had possessed many of Rabbainu’s works. He replied that these were the ones he had and that perhaps the remaining books had been given to another person. He pointed out all his books on the windowsill, apart from these works of Rabbainu, and told me to search among them in case I found additional works of Rabbainu. I searched but found no more. EN: I asked how much he wanted for them. He replied, “Two pounds.” I told him that this was a great sum of money. He answered that he intended to travel to Yerushalayim and take the books with him to sell there. In sum, I wished him to give them to me for one pound, but he refused under all circumstances. At last I concluded an agreement with him for one and a half pounds. Yet from where could I obtain the money? I possessed nothing at all apart from what I required for my return journey to Yerushalayim. EN: I wished to arrange credit with him or some other form of payment, but he remained firm: unless I brought him the full sum, down to the final prutah, he would not give me even one book. I left him with a heavy head. From where could I obtain the money? Who would give me one and a half pounds? It appeared nearly impossible. I almost despaired of obtaining the books. EN: I came to the shop of Rabbi Tzvi, a wine merchant who was our friend and treated us warmly. I borrowed ten grush from him to purchase a piece of cheese for my household. In the meantime I told him about the aforementioned books and how much the man wanted for them. He asked whether I thought I could profit from them in Yerushalayim. I answered that with the help of Hashem, may He be blessed, I would surely profit from them. Although the price was high and the sum considerable, I would be able to earn a profit in Yerushalayim. He replied that he would lend me the money and allow me time to repay it. He told me that he had lent money to several young men among our fellow Breslover Chassidim and that a long time had passed without their repaying him. I promised to speak to them concerning the matter and rebuke them. EN: He told me to go to my uncle, Rabbi Avraham Leib, may his light shine, and write a promissory note stating that I had borrowed one and a half pounds from him, so that he would possess a written reminder. While I was at my aforementioned uncle’s home writing the promissory note, Rabbi Tzvi also arrived there. He told me that he was going to attend to some business. When I came to his shop and gave the note to his wife, she would immediately give me the money. This indeed occurred. I prepared the promissory note and gave it to her, and she gave me the one and a half pounds. I was filled with joy, for Hashem, may He be blessed, had helped me in a miraculous manner when I had no longer thought I would merit obtaining the books. EN: After paying the entire sum, I took the books. I asked the seller for a sack, but he refused to give me one. I was compelled to place the books in my traveling bag together with my tallis and tefillin. I left him joyfully. EN: I also purchased a piece of cheese weighing approximately half a rotel. I spent that Thursday night of Parashas Balak joyfully at the hachnasas orchim lodging house in Tzefas. On the one hand I rejoiced that, blessed be Hashem, I had fulfilled the vow I had made concerning the child; on the other hand I rejoiced that I had merited purchasing several of Rabbainu’s works.
