EN: I resolved to travel home early on the following day, Friday. Thus that night, too, passed over me in Tzefas. Early in the morning I arose and went to the mikvah. I also prayed in the Ashkenazi synagogue of the Arizal. Immediately afterward I hurried, took my possessions and the aforementioned books I had purchased, ate something in the hachnasas orchim lodging house, and went with those possessions to board the bus traveling to Haifa by way of Meron. I sat down upon the bus. EN: We traveled beyond Meron, but encountered several delays along the way because the bus was in poor condition. It ran out of gasoline and suffered a puncture on the road. We were therefore delayed for several hours. The bus also had to proceed very slowly so that it would not break down from the heat. This caused me great anguish over whether I would still be able to reach Yerushalayim for the holy Shabbos. EN: I was likewise afraid because all roads are presumed dangerous, especially in those days, following the bombing in Haifa. During our journey we could still see the smoke from the burning oil. My heart surely trembled within me at traveling on the roads in such days. Yet I had been compelled to fulfill the vow because Hashem, may He be blessed, had helped us through the child’s recovery in a manner beyond the natural order, as stated above. I had said that I would travel to Meron to thank Hashem, may He be blessed, and was compelled to fulfill my word. Nevertheless, with all my heart and soul I already wished to be back in my home. EN: The aforementioned return journey from Tzefas to Haifa was exceedingly difficult, as stated above. The bus moved so slowly, step by step. When we had reached approximately the midpoint of the journey, an enormous airplane flew over us and roared loudly. We stopped near a police station on the road and did not know what was happening. They did not permit us to continue and said that traffic in Haifa had been halted. People traveling on the bus said that this was because Haifa was being bombed, God forbid. EN: Our anguish, suffering, and fear may readily be understood. I thought to myself that one had to be mad to travel on the roads at such a time. At all times “all roads are presumed dangerous” and “the Accuser prosecutes at a time of danger.” Particularly in evil days, God forbid, one must fulfill “Come, My people, enter your chambers,” concealing oneself from danger, as is brought in the holy Zohar and the Gemara, and so forth. EN: I quite literally felt as though I stood upon thorns. Who knew how long we would remain delayed, standing and waiting upon the road, apart from the bus already traveling so slowly, as stated above? Who knew whether I would still be able to reach Yerushalayim for the holy Shabbos? Spending Shabbos in Haifa was exceedingly contrary to my desire, for it would mean remaining so long in a place closer to the danger. EN: We also feared that they might drop bombs upon us on the road, God forbid. Our suffering and fear may therefore readily be understood; my soul quite literally loathed my life. Afterward the police at the roadside station told us that they had spoken by telephone with Haifa and had learned that there had been no bombing, God forbid. The government had merely conducted military exercises for a certain period, and for that reason traffic had been closed. EN: They then permitted us to proceed. We traveled onward, though very slowly, as stated above. We consoled ourselves that our fear had been unfounded and rejoiced that, blessed be Hashem, there was quiet and tranquility. Nevertheless, I remained distressed over whether such a slow journey would permit me to reach Yerushalayim for the holy Shabbos. I also thought that travel upon the roads had already become loathsome to me, that with all my strength I would restrain myself from traveling, and that this journey—with its fear, anguish, and suffering—would remain engraved in my mind. EN: At long last we merited reaching Haifa. I also still succeeded in catching an Egged bus traveling to Yerushalayim, and set out for Yerushalayim. Blessed be Hashem, that bus traveled well, in the manner of good buses. I suffered, however, because I had no sack in which to hold the aforementioned books. I held them in my hands, but they repeatedly fell and scattered. I was compelled to gather them and watch carefully that they should neither fall nor become lost. Thus I traveled as far as Tel Aviv, where I had to transfer to a bus for Yerushalayim. Many people stood in line, and I was compelled to stand there with the books, tallis, and tefillin in my hands. The books repeatedly scattered and fell from me, for their weight exceeded my strength. EN: In sum, this caused me great wandering and hardship. I already longed for the moment when I would merit being in my home. With toil and sweat I finally merited sitting upon the bus traveling directly to Yerushalayim, and at last I merited reaching Yerushalayim. When I descended from the bus, the books again fell and scattered from me, and people helped me gather them into my arms as before. EN: With all my strength I carried them as far as a certain soda-water shop. I asked the proprietor to lend me a sack in which to place the books, promising that with the help of Hashem, may He be blessed, I would return it on Sunday. He replied that he had no sack. He also searched for some garment but found none. At last he found a large and costly cloak and gave it to me. I spread it out, placed all the books within it, and tied them together. I wished to leave collateral with him, but he refused and said that he trusted me. EN: I took the bundle and walked to a special bus that traveled into the city. It was now easier for me, since the books no longer fell and scattered as they had throughout the journey. I traveled into the city and joyfully reached my home several hours before the kindling of the lamps for the holy Shabbos. I went to the bathhouse and also to the Western Wall to receive Shabbos, and received Shabbos with joy and serenity. EN: Blessed be Hashem, I spent the Shabbos of Parashas Balak joyfully in my home. I performed my devotions as on every Shabbos. I prayed Vasikin with our fellow Breslover Chassidim and Mussaf at the Western Wall, where I remained in prayers, Tikkun Haklali, and so forth. We ate the Shabbos meal joyfully. I rejoiced with the children, particularly with my younger son, who was like a newly created being among us. I studied the regular lessons with my son, both from the works of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, and from the Shulchan Aruch, and likewise completed my own regular studies. Sleep on Shabbos is also a delight. EN: I rested, reflected in my mind and understanding, and offered praise and thanksgiving to Hashem, may He be blessed, that I had already merited discharging the obligation of my vow in gratitude for Hashem’s kindness to us in healing the child, quite literally from death to life. In the course of doing so, I had also merited being at such holy places: the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit protect us, amen, and the other tzaddikim in Meron, and the tombs of the tzaddikim in the cemetery of Tzefas. I likewise gave thanks for the vitality Hashem, may He be blessed, had provided me through Rabbainu’s works, for my soul thirsted and yearned exceedingly for the works of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, particularly since they had come to me through exertion and the sweat of my brow, as stated above. EN: I thanked Hashem, may He be blessed, for all this and took delight in it. I likewise delighted in already being able to look into the books. I completed my regular studies and prayed the Minchah service of the holy Shabbos in our beis midrash. We likewise fulfilled the mitzvah of the third Shabbos meal with joy and vitality. Thus this holy Shabbos passed over us in song, praise, and thanksgiving to Hashem, may He be blessed. EN: On Sunday I sent the cloak back to the aforementioned soda-water proprietor through my son, may his light shine, and thanked him for his kindness. Throughout this entire period and all those days, although, blessed be Hashem, the child’s condition steadily improved, he nevertheless remained exceedingly weak and coughed frequently. We were compelled to supervise him carefully. My wife, may she live, arose every day at the first light of morning. While I went to pray the Shacharis service at Vasikin, she took him outside the houses to breathe the air. I likewise went out with him toward evening. EN: His appearance was unusual. Everyone who saw him marveled at his appearance and extreme thinness, and that person’s heart ached for him. Our own hearts, too, were joyful on the one hand because we knew his previous condition; on the other hand, we remained exceedingly anxious over his appearance and thinness and over the fact that he still required careful supervision. Nevertheless, we accepted with love our labor and exertion on his behalf and looked toward Hashem, may He be blessed, that He would continue to help us just as He had helped us until then in His abundant kindness and goodness.
