EN: In those days and at that time, the condition of the Jewish people throughout the world was growing progressively more severe. Here, too, people feared and worried over the situation. Every heart trembled, ached, and cried out to Hashem, may He be blessed, for the enemy drew ever nearer. All our Jewish brethren surely made the heavens tremble at the holy places concerning the condition of Israel as a whole and our own condition in particular. EN: On Erev Rosh Chodesh, when I was at Rachel’s Tomb, one of the people who traveled there every Erev Rosh Chodesh said to me, “Why are people here in our Holy Land silent about our condition? Why do they not make the worlds tremble with prayers, cries, and weeping before Hashem, may He be blessed, that He have mercy upon us?” I answered that all of us were surely increasing prayer and crying out to Hashem, may He be blessed, both at the holy places and in our homes. EN: He told me that it was reported that our Jewish brethren in Egypt were making the worlds tremble with cries, weeping, fasts, and so forth. Although we, too, occupied ourselves with prayer, we were not making the heavens tremble to the degree our condition required. “Who knows,” he said, “whether on the next Erev Rosh Chodesh we will still merit traveling to Rachel’s Tomb—whether we will even be alive then, God forbid?” He spoke to me with such ardor and arousal that I was stirred and alarmed by his words. I consoled him, saying that we surely had to fall upon our faces day and night in prayer and supplication before Hashem, may He be blessed. Nevertheless, we also had to strengthen ourselves and trust in Hashem, may He be blessed, that in the merit of our Holy Land He would neither abandon nor forsake us. EN: In truth, all of us were filled with astonishment at the rabbis for not arousing Israel and decreeing that people assemble and gather in the streets and marketplaces to cry bitterly to Hashem, may He be blessed, and likewise go to the graves and rend the graves, as it were, with cries and weeping. EN: It might also have been possible to perform the practice brought in the holy Zohar: at a time of great distress there is one counsel—to take a valid Torah scroll and go with it near the graves amid cries, weeping, fasting, and repentance. The dead then make the heavens tremble over the exile of the Torah and the anguish of the world, and they do not rest until they tear up the world’s decree. Yet there is great danger in this. If the Torah scroll is not valid, or if the arousal is not wholehearted and accompanied by repentance, still greater accusation arises, God forbid. Opinions therefore differed concerning the matter. Some said that in a time of distress one pays no heed to such considerations, for there is nothing left to lose; the rabbis, however, held that the practice was dangerous. EN: The Sephardim who occupied themselves with prayer and arousal to repentance printed notices announcing that they would walk through the street with a Torah scroll, arouse the people through Tehillim and cries to Hashem, may He be blessed, and assemble in the courtyard of Batei Machseh. Rabbi Yonatan Binyamin Horowitz, the administrator of Batei Machseh, asked a certain rabbi whether it was advisable to take the Torah scroll into the street. The rabbi replied that in his opinion it was not advisable. EN: On the day appointed for the public gathering in the street, after benches had already been brought and placed in the courtyard, the aforementioned Rabbi Yonatan Binyamin Horowitz called to the organizer from his balcony. He told him that under no circumstances would he permit them to walk through Batei Machseh with the Torah scroll in the street. He had spoken with rabbis, and they had said that it was inadvisable. Therefore, without the rabbis’ written approval, he would not permit it. The organizer replied that they would conduct the gathering without the Torah scroll, and Rabbi Yonatan agreed. EN: They began bringing benches from Yeshivas Porat Yosef and placed them in the courtyard of Batei Machseh beneath Rabbi Yonatan Binyamin Horowitz’s balcony, not far from the windows of my home. Over the course of approximately an hour, a Sephardi congregation assembled—men, elders, youths, and women, as well as a small number of Ashkenazim—and they began the gathering. A Sephardi sage delivered, with weeping and tears, words of arousal and rebuke, prayers, and Selichos. Everyone responded aloud and with weeping. Merely witnessing this quite literally aroused one to tears. EN: Rabbi Yonatan Binyamin Horowitz participated from above on his balcony. I likewise participated from the window of my home and shed many hot tears. The gathering continued for several hours. Afterward they went to Yeshivas Porat Yosef, and I went with them. There, too, they recited prayers and words of arousal. From there they proceeded to another place outside the city. I returned home and did not accompany them further. EN: Several weeks later, Rabbi Yonatan Binyamin Horowitz went to Tel Arza because of his weakness and remained there for several weeks. The week of Parashas Pinchas likewise passed over us, while we labored with the child and supervised him, as stated above. The Shabbos of Parashas Pinchas arrived and likewise passed over me joyfully, as stated above, with my regular studies and service of Hashem, as stated above. EN: On Motzaei Shabbos began the yahrtzeit of the holy Ohr HaChaim, the fifteenth of Tammuz. Following the third meal in our beis midrash, some of our fellow Breslover Chassidim went to pray Maariv in the synagogue of the holy Ohr HaChaim. There they recited chapters of Tehillim and petitions and kindled olive oil. I did not go with them at that time. EN: Some of them likewise went during the predawn watch to the tomb of the holy Ohr HaChaim, while I remained at home. In the morning, however, after the Vasikin prayer, I went there carrying my younger son in order to thank Hashem, may He be blessed, for the miracles He had performed for us with him. My next older son, may his light shine, accompanied me. We arrived in the middle of the service and remained there throughout it, part of the time in the beis midrash and part in the courtyard because the infant could not endure remaining inside. I also kindled a small quantity of olive oil for the elevation of the soul of the Ohr HaChaim, of blessed memory. EN: Other Ashkenazi Chassidim then arrived. They likewise kindled the olive-oil lamps and studied from the works composed by the holy Ohr HaChaim. One of them said to me, “I have a relative who is a Breslover Chassid, and he does not know at all that he is my relative.” I asked what he meant. He told me that he was my relative, though I had known nothing of it. I asked him how. He replied that the father of my mother and the father of his wife were brothers. From that time onward he became an acquaintance of mine, although he was somewhat opposed to Breslover Chassidus.
