מִכְתָּב שֶׁכָּתַב רַבִּי יִצְחָק זַ"ל לְבָנָיו מִשְּׁלוֹם בּוֹאוֹ לְאַרְצֵנוּ הַקְּדוֹשָׁה תִּבָּנֶה וְתִכּוֹנֵן.
I hereby inform you of my welfare and the welfare of all the members of my household — that, blessed be Hashem, we are here on the line of life and peace. So may Hashem grant, and so may He continue to grant, that I see all the members of my household in life and in peace. I hereby inform you of my arrival home on the above-mentioned day, and that there reached me from his illustrious eminence a letter of greeting, in which it is stated and restated that she is unable to come on account of the pasport (passport / travel documents), and that the border too is closed and sealed. And it is further stated and restated that I myself should come to Kressilov.
בָּרוּךְ הַשֵּׁם, יוֹם ו' עֶרֶב שַׁבַּת קֹדֶשׁ מַטּוֹת וּמַסְעֵי תרכ"ח פֹּה עִיר הַקֹּדֶשׁ צְפָת תִּבָּנֶה וְתִכּוֹנֵן בִּמְהֵרָה בְּיָמֵינוּ אָמֵן סֶלָה.
Therefore I hereby inform him to revert to the original arrangement, and so forth — for what has passed is gone, since the time of the wedding has already passed. And as for the future, my request is — if it is the wish of his eminence — that the bond which we have bound between us should be a bond that endures. Let his splendid eminence be so gracious as to forgo his lofty and exalted honor, and to hold the wedding close to here, near our community — so that it should be close and accessible to the holy community of Breslov. And let it not be delayed past the middle of the coming month of Elul — which comes upon us for good — for I am unable to move from my place even a single parsa (a measure of distance, approximately four kilometers). And if not — G-d forbid, the mountain will have grown high between us — and enough for the one who understands.
יִשְּׂאוּ הָרִים שָׁלוֹם וּבְרָכָה לִכְבוֹד אֲהוּבַי בָּנַי שֶׁיִּחְיוּ וְעִם שְׁלוֹם נְשׁוֹתֵיהֶם וְעִם שְׁלוֹם כָּל יוֹצְאֵי חֲלָצֵיהֶם שֶׁיִּחְיוּ, כֻּלָּם יַעַמְדוּ עַל הַבְּרָכָה מֵחַי הַחַיִּים מֵעַתָּה וְלָנֶצַח.
The request is doubled: to make every effort to send me his daughter with the bridal needs — no later than the above-mentioned time — so that the chupah (wedding canopy) should take place at the fullness of the moon, and so forth. And regarding her journey here — when she is close to here, approximately three or four parsa'os away — let him see to it to send her with an escort, and I shall write to her the fixed location of the wedding. And regarding the pasport (travel document) — let him see to finding ways to come here without my passport, particularly since it is easily possible to come here without a passport. מֵעִיר הַקֹּדֶשׁ חֵיפָא כָּתַבְתִּי לָכֶם בַּאֲרִיכוּת. עַתָּה אוֹדֶה ה' בְּכָל לְבָבִי עַל כָּל הַטּוֹב אֲשֶׁר גָּמַל עִמִּי, וּתְהִלָּה לָאֵל קִבַּלְתִּי הַחֲפָצִים שֶׁלִּי בִּשְׁלֵמוּת בְּאֵין מַחְסוֹר דָּבָר. וּבְעֶזְרָתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ בְּכָל הָעִנְיָנִים הַלָּלוּ הָיוּ לִי חֲסָדִים נִפְלָאִים, תְּחִלָּתוֹ יִסּוּרִין וְסוֹפוֹ בְּשַׁלְוָה. וּתְהִלָּה לָאֵל בָּאתִי לְפֹה בְּיוֹם ג' הֶעָבַר לְעֵת עֶרֶב, וּבְחַסְדֵי ה' קִבְּלוּ אוֹתִי פֹּה בְּכָבוֹד גָּדוֹל וְהַרְבֵּה אֲנָשִׁים יָצְאוּ לִקְרָאתִי. וּמֵעֵת בּוֹאִי עַד מֵעֵת לְעֵת לְאַחֲרָיו לֹא נַחְתִּי מֵאֲשֶׁר בָּאוּ כַּמָּה מְכֻבָּדִים לְקַבֵּל פָּנִים, וְהַכֹּל בְּאַהֲבָה רַבָּה, וּבֵרְכוּ אוֹתִי בִּרְכַּת יְשִׁיבָתִי פֹּה לְטוֹבָה. וּבְעֵת בּוֹאִי לְהִתְפַּלֵּל לְבֵית הַכְּנֶסֶת שֶׁל כְּבוֹד הָאֲרִיזַ"ל, קִבֵּל אוֹתִי תֵּכֶף הַמְמֻנֶּה כְּבוֹד הָרַב רַבִּי פִּינְחָס מִקַּלִיבַּאן לַעֲמֹד אֶצְלוֹ. וּכְבוֹד הַגְּבִיר הַמֻּפְלָא הָרַב חַיִּים לֵיבּ מִקָּאמִינִיץ גַּם כֵּן מִתְפַּלֵּל בְּשָׁם, וּבָא תֵּכֶף לִמְקוֹמִי וְנָתַן לִי שָׁלוֹם בְּאַהֲבָה. כִּי הוּא בְּתוֹלָדָה מֵעִיר מָאהלִיב, וְאַהֲבָתוֹ עֲדַיִן תָּקוּעַ בְּלִבּוֹ לְאַהֲבַת כְּבוֹד אֲדוֹנִי אָבִי וּמוֹרִי וְרַבִּי זללה"ה, וּבִפְרָט לִכְבוֹד זְקֵנִי הַקָּדוֹשׁ הָרַב ר' דָּוִד צְבִי זללה"ה. מָה אֹמַר מָה אֲדַבֵּר גָּדוֹל ה' וּמְהֻלָּל מְאֹד וּמַה גָּדְלוּ נִפְלְאוֹתָיו עִמִּי, וְהַכֹּל בִּזְכוּת הָאֶשֶׁל הַגָּדוֹל הַנַּחַל נוֹבֵעַ מְקוֹר חָכְמָה זֵכֶר צַדִּיק וְקָדוֹשׁ לִבְרָכָה, וְתַלְמִידוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ כְּבוֹד אֲדוֹנִי אָבִי וּמוֹרִי וְרַבִּי זַ"ל. כֵּן יִהְיֶה ה' בְּעֶזְרִי אֲשֶׁר זְכוּתָם הַגָּדוֹל יַעֲמֹד לִי לְהַצְלִיחַ פֹּה לְתַכְלִיתִי הַנִּצְחִי לֵילֵךְ בְּדַרְכֵיהֶם הַקְּדוֹשׁוֹת, וְאֶזְכֶּה לַעֲבֹד אֶת ה' מֵחָדָשׁ לִשְׁקֹד עַל דַּלְתֵי הַתּוֹרָה וּתְפִלָּה וּמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים וּלְהוֹסִיף בְּכָל יוֹם אֲרִיכַת יָמִים וְשָׁנִים.
Thus speak the words of one who concludes — may Hashem add to him life and length of days and good years — and thus speak the words of one who is destined to be his son-in-law, who constantly seeks his welfare with great and mighty love, and who awaits his reply by return.
וּמָה אֹמַר לָכֶם בָּנַי, מַה טּוֹב וּמַה נָּעִים יְשִׁיבַת הָאָרֶץ הַקְּדוֹשָׁה הַזֹּאת, וְאֵין יְכוֹלִים לְשַׁעֵר זֹאת. וְיֵשׁ כַּמָּה שָׁעוֹת שֶׁאֲנִי מֻכְרָח לְקַיֵּם הָעֵצָה הַקְּדוֹשָׁה שֶׁל פֶּן יֶהֶרְסוּ. ה' יִהְיֶה בְּעֶזְרִי שֶׁאֶזְכֶּה לְהֵטִיב דְּרָכַי בִּקְדֻשָּׁה לְאֹרֶךְ יָמִים וְשָׁנִים טוֹבוֹת אָמֵן כֵּן יְהִי רָצוֹן. דִּירָה עֲדַיִן אֵין לִי, וּלְעֵת עַתָּה מִתְאַכְסֵן אָנֹכִי אֵצֶל יְדִידֵינוּ הָאָהוּב הָרַב מֵאִיר נֵרוֹ יָאִיר. וְשָׂכַרְתִּי דִּירָה לְפִי שָׁעָה לִישׁוֹן שָׁמָּה, וְהַחַלּוֹנוֹת שֶׁלִּי פְּתוּחִים נֶגֶד צִיּוּן הַקָּדוֹשׁ שֶׁל הַצַּדִּיק הַתַּנָּא הַקָּדוֹשׁ הָרַב שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן יוֹחַאי, אֲשֶׁר רוֹאֶה אָנֹכִי כָּעֵת גַּם כֵּן הַצִּיּוּן הַקָּדוֹשׁ שֶׁלּוֹ זְכוּתוֹ יָגֵן עָלֵינוּ. ה' בְּרֹב רַחֲמָיו יָחוּס עָלַי וְיַזְמִין לִי דִּירָה נְכוֹנָה. וְהַאֻמְנָם שֶׁיֵּשׁ הַרְבֵּה דִּירוֹת לִשְׂכֹּר, עִם כָּל זֶה צָרִיךְ אֲנִי חֶדֶר מְיֻחָד לְהַרְבּוֹת בְּתַחֲנוּנִים מִלְּפָנָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ, שֶׁבְּחַסְדּוֹ אֶמְצָא הַדִּירָה נְכוֹנָה. וְאֵלָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ תִּקְוָתִי שֶׁיּוֹשִׁיעֵנוּ בָּזֶה גַּם כֵּן לְטוֹבָתִי. וְהִנֵּה בְּלִבִּי לֹא הָיוּ לִכְתֹּב לָכֶם הַיּוֹם מְאוּמָה וְטִרְדָּתִי עֲדַיִן, רַק פִּתְאוֹם בָּא הָרָץ הַהוֹלֵךְ לְבַיירָאט, אָמַרְתִּי לְהוֹדִיעֲכֶם עַל כָּל פָּנִים מִשְּׁלוֹם בּוֹאִי לְפֹה לְשָׁלוֹם. וְאֵין פְּנַאי לְהַאֲרִיךְ וְלֹא לִכְתֹּב לְשׁוּם אָדָם בְּיִחוּד, אִם יִרְצֶה הַשֵּׁם עַל יְדֵי הָרָץ הַשֵּׁנִי בְּעֶרֶךְ שְׁנֵי שָׁבוּעוֹת אִם יִרְצֶה הַשֵּׁם עַד אוֹתוֹ הָעֵת אָכִין לְכָל הַמְּקוֹמוֹת לְכָל אֶחָד כָּרָאוּי. לְעֵת עַתָּה עֲדַיִן לֹא נַחְתִּי מֵעֲיֵפוּתִי מֵרְכִיבַת הַחֲמוֹר אֲשֶׁר שִׁבֵּר עַצְמוֹתַי מְאֹד. וְעִם כָּל זֶה הָיוּ גַּם בָּזֶה חֲסָדִים נִפְלָאִים יְרַחֵם ה' עָלַי שֶׁיִּהְיֶה לָנוּ אִם יִרְצֶה הַשֵּׁם שַׁבָּת הַקָּדוֹשׁ הַבָּא עָלֵינוּ לְטוֹבָה בִּמְנוּחָה וְאַהֲבָה וְשָׁלוֹם. וּבָזֶה אֲסַיֵּם וְאֹמַר שָׁלוֹם.
Nachman, son of our Teacher the Rabbi Simcha — may his Rock protect him and give him life.
דִּבְרֵי אֲבִיכֶם וְאוֹהַבְכֶם הַשָּׂשׂ וְשָׂמֵחַ בְּכָל לֵב וָנֶפֶשׁ בְּכָל עֵת וָרֶגַע אֲשֶׁר זָכִיתִי לָבוֹא הֵנָּה, וּמְבָרֵךְ אֶתְכֶם בְּכָל טוּב רוּחָנִי וְגַשְׁמִי לְטוֹב לָכֶם כָּל הַיָּמִים, אָמֵן כֵּן יְהִי רָצוֹן.
Overview: This letter marks a striking turn — Rebbe Nachman, whose first wife Sashye passed away, is here negotiating his second marriage to the daughter of Reb Yechezkel Trachtenberg of Brad. The letter is entirely practical: travel documents, border closures, the timing of the chupah, the location of the wedding, and the urgency of not missing the auspicious date of the full moon of Elul. Yet even within these mundane negotiations, Rebbe Nachman's characteristic urgency and directness come through unmistakably.

And I also marvel at your eminence for not writing to me the total number of copies to be printed — a thousand, or more. And also: on what paper — on shrayb (writing paper) or on rigahl (ruled / lined paper) — and how many on shrayb and how many on rigahl. And how much your eminence is paying the printer as the fee for printing per boygin (signature / gathering of pages). And how many boygin this book will contain in total. Thus let your eminence write to me every detail, by return.
