For as your precious son-in-law wrote to me — the good tiding that you obtained the Gralink — therefore I bless you — that in the merit of the charity and welcoming of guests for all the Anash — may it stand for you now on this day of judgment — for good life and for peace. And may He give you such success that you will be able to fulfill in Eretz Yisroel — charity and welcoming of guests — and to make Chanukah and Purim and Passover and Shavuos and Sukkos for the Anash — as you did in the diaspora. And may your house be a meeting house for the wise — and open wide. And may you clear all your debts quickly and soon — and our enemies will see and be ashamed. And may the merit of Rabbainu ז"ל and his holy disciple — and the merit of all the Tzaddikim who are stored away as treasure here [הגנוזים — haghnuzim — "the treasured ones, the ones stored away" — from ganaz — to store away, to treasure; specifically the Tzaddikim whose holiness is preserved and radiating from the holy soil of Eretz Yisroel; not merely "hidden" but stored as a precious treasure] in all the holy cities — protect you and your sons and daughters and the children of your children — to pour down upon them abundant blessing — and save them from every trouble and distress — and let there be heard in your house gladness and joy. And may you merit in this year to see by your daughter Yidel-Leah, may she live, another male child who will endure. And your grandson Sender Chaim, may his candle shine, may he lengthen days and good years — in Torah and in wisdom and in wealth and in honor. And may He fulfill in you what I desire to see in you. My request — spread out and prostrated before your honor [בקשתי שטוחה — "my request is spread out, laid flat, prostrated" — from shitach — to spread out, to flatten; the image of a request that utterly prostrates itself before the recipient; a stronger image than merely "humble" — it is fully laid out and prostrate] — as I sent you a letter through a non-Jewish donkey-driver — for at first I wanted to send it to you through Reb Ber, may his candle shine, in the name of the patron Reb Chaim Yehoshua, may his candle shine — but Reb Ber did not want to receive it from me — and I was compelled to give it to the non-Jew. And I wrote to give him twenty paras for his trouble. And within the letter was enclosed a letter from Breslov — to the woman Dabris — the wife of Reb Tevil, may his candle shine. And I have suffering — that I have no receipt for my letter. For when my letter is lost, G-d forbid — it is also a loss. For within it are found several good words from our master and teacher Reb Nosson ז"ל. And particularly now — before Rosh Hashana — we must be included together in love and unity — at least through letters — as is explained in the Torah Chadi Rabbi Shimon — and through this all the harsh judgments will be sweetened. For I have been gravely ill for six days — and twice I had a full-night sweat throughout the entire night — and I have not the strength to bear my weakness. Only "He Who gives power to the weary" — He gives me strength. And also I ask of Reb Nachman, may his candle shine, and Reb Dov, may his candle shine, and Reb Yoel Hirsh, may his candle shine, and Reb Shmuel, may his candle shine, and Reb Chaim, may his candle shine, and Reb Yaakov, may his candle shine — also to pray on my behalf. And even so — the heat did not cool — and the entire world cried out to receive quinine — until my household had no choice — and they took quinine and gave it to me. And because of this — there remained several more illnesses — for two days and three days I could not — there was great constipation and a great cough. And my mind is a little confused. But all my truly beloved — I bind myself together with you — to give true, genuine thanks — for having revived me. And surely G-d willing Hashem Yisbarach will complete my salvation in wholeness. And I will give thanks in joy to the G-d of thanksgivings. And also G-d willing I will bring you joy with good letters. And do not cease from prayer ever. Quinine given. נ נח נחמ נחמן מאומן As I heard that you want to hear of my recovery for good — know that surely — thanks to you for your lives — as my illness was severe and life-threatening — surely thanks to you — and blessed be G-d — the G-d Who is good and does good — in the merit of Rabbainu ז"ל and his holy disciple — and in the merit of all the Tzaddikim — and in the merit of the prayers of the Anash — my illness has been eased. But I am still very ill. For I cannot stand on my feet even for the eighteen blessings of prayer — and I also cannot sit in an orderly manner for half an hour continuously. And I sit continuously in sweat. And sleep is far from me — and when Hashem Yisbarach helps me and I sleep — there is no song or praise in my mouth sufficient to give thanks to Hashem Yisbarach. And when I study for more than a quarter of an hour — I cannot hold my head — and I am compelled to lie down on my bed. And for three or four days I am constipated. And I do not taste any flavor in meat — only my main food is grapes. And every evening I have a great fever in my head. And even so — I give thanks for the past and cry out for the future. And I ask of all who love my soul — to greatly multiply prayer on my behalf. And I also in the midst of my illness — greatly ask for all the Anash — for now my strength is only in my mouth — to ask mercy for me and for all who love my soul. And do not be resentful against me that I do not write to you — for believe me — this small letter I did not have the strength to write to you. For I have no strength in my hands. For three weeks ago — when you wrote to me that the animals of your co-parent-in-law, may his candle shine, were stolen — and also some other matters — I nearly fell faint — for it was in the very heart of my illness. But trust is in Hashem Who has begun to help — in the merit of Rabbainu ז"ל and his holy disciple — and in the merit of your love and your prayers — He will surely G-d willing complete it through their merit for me — and heal me fully — so that I can engage in Torah and prayer.
