Beginner: The garments a person wears correspond to the mystical concept of chashmal (Ezekiel 1:27) — the luminous divine fire described in Ezekiel's vision. Chashmal represents guarding and spiritual protection. Therefore, garments must always remain whole and untorn. Any tearing of a garment damages this spiritual protection — it creates an opening in the protective envelope that chashmal provides. This is the deeper reason for the prohibition of tearing one's garments in anger: it is not merely a matter of controlling one's temper, but an actual spiritual act that damages one's protective covering. The garment is not merely physical clothing but a spiritual vessel that both expresses and maintains the integrity of the person's spiritual state. Intermediate: Garments = secret of chashmal (Yech 1:27) = guarding/protection. Must be whole and untorn. Tearing = damages chashmal-protection. Prohibition of tearing in anger = spiritual act, not just temper control. Garment = spiritual vessel maintaining integrity of person's state.
