בָּרוּךְ הַשֵּׁם, יוֹם ד' פָּרָשַׁת בְּהַר תרל"ב לפ"ק אוּמַאן.
Your letter reached me here in the holy community of Zaslav, and it caused me very great grief — how could the hearts of these wicked men have been so filled, and how could they have been so brazen against you. And I marvel that no righteous person was found to stand against the evil and to oppose them, to root out the wickedness.
לִכְבוֹד יְדִידִי כְּנַפְשִׁי הָרַב הַמֻּפְלָג הַוָּתִיק וְעוֹשֶׂה חֶסֶד וְכוּ' הַנָּגִיד רַבִּי יְחֶזְקֵאל הֶעשִׁיל נֵרוֹ לֹא יִדְעַךְ נֶצַח סֶלָה וָעֶד, שֶׁיִּחְיוּ וְיַאֲרִיכוּ יָמִים רַבִּים וְכָל טוּב הַצְלָחָה אָמֵן כֵּן יְהִי רָצוֹן.
My beloved brother, my very soul and my heart — fear them not, and be not broken before them. Only be strong and courageous in Torah and in the fear of Hashem all day long — as we have spoken between us. And the merit of your forebears will support you. For all of this is in order to elevate you, to increase your honor, and to enlarge your mind. For just as it is impossible for all manner of seeds to reach the fullness of their growth — until the seed is first placed in the earth, and then the seed decays, and only after its decay does it sprout and blossom and become a great tree — so too is this very matter:
אָחִי יְדִידִי שָׁמַעְתִּי אֲשֶׁר עָבַר עַל מַעֲלָתוֹ בִּדְבַר הַשְּׂרֵפָה אֲשֶׁר הָיָה בִּקְהִלָּתוֹ, יְמַלֵּא ה' חֶסְרוֹנְךָ, וְעַל דָּא קָאָתֵינָא לְבָרְכוֹ וּלְחַזְּקוֹ. חֲזַק וְיַאֲמֵץ לִבֶּךָ וְקַוֵּה אֶל ה' שֶׁמַּלֵּא יְמַלֵּא ה' חֶסְרוֹנוֹ בְּכֶפֶל כִּפְלֵי כִּפְלַיִם. וְיִזְכֹּר נָא יְדִידִי מַאֲמַר חֲכָמֵינוּ זַ"ל (בָּבָא בַּתְרָא י.) בְּראֹשׁ־הַשָּׁנָה גּוֹזְרִין כַּמָּה יַפְסִיד וְכַמָּה יַרְוִיחַ. וְיָכוֹל לִהְיוֹת, וְכֵן יַעֲזֹר לוֹ ה' שֶׁהָרֶוַח יִהְיֶה כִּפְלֵי כִּפְלֵי כִּפְלַיִם לַאֲלָפִים. וְאַף עַל פִּי כֵן מֻכְרָחִין לְהַפְסִיד אֵיזֶה סְכוּם גַּם כֵּן כַּנַּ"ל, רַק אִם זָכָה הוּא מַפְסִידוֹ לִנְתִינַת הַצְּדָקָה. וּמֵעַתָּה יַצְלִיחֵהוּ נָא ה' בְּכָל מַעֲשֵׂי יָדָיו אֲשֶׁר יִקְנֶה וַאֲשֶׁר יִסְחַר יִהְיֶה לְהַצְלָחָה רַבָּה. וַה' יְזַכֵּנוּ שֶׁנּוֹצִיא מִזֶּה רְמָזִים לְהִתְקָרֵב לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ וּלְתוֹרָתוֹ, כִּי הֲלֹא אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹאִים בְּעֵינֵינוּ בְּכָל פַּעַם אֲשֶׁר הַכֹּל בְּיָדוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ, הַנְּשָׁמָה שֶׁלּוֹ וְהַגּוּף שֶׁלּוֹ וְהַמָּמוֹן שֶׁלּוֹ, וְאֵין בְּיָדֵינוּ לְהַרְוִיחַ, וְאֵין בְּיָדֵינוּ לְהִנָּצֵל מִשּׁוּם הֶפְסֵד רַק בְּעֶזְרַת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ.
I hereby inform your eminence that it is my intention to remain here in the holy community of Zaslav for approximately three months — and afterward I shall know which direction to turn.
עַל כֵּן אָחִי יְדִידִי, נַתְחִיל מֵעַתָּה לְקַיֵּם אַזְהָרַת רַבֵּנוּ זַ"ל לִקְבֹּעַ עִתִּים לְתוֹרָה וְלִתְפִלָּה, וּלְקַיֵּם הַזְהָרָתוֹ לְהַשְׁלִיךְ אֶת עַצְמוֹ עָלָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ בְּכָל יוֹם וָיוֹם, וְלִגְזֹז אֶת נְכָסָיו לִצְדָקָה. אָז תַּצְלִיחַ וְאָז תַּשְׂכִּיל בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה וּבָעוֹלָם הַבָּא. וְעוֹד בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה יִהְיֶה לְךָ חַיִּים טוֹבִים וּנְעִימִים. כִּי כְּלָל הוּא שֶׁהָעוֹלָם מָלֵא מְרִירוּת מִכָּל צַד, וְאֵין שׁוּם הַמְתָּקָה רַק זֹאת הַתּוֹרָה. בִּשְׁנֵי אֳפָנִים, הָאֶחָד שֶׁעַל יְדֵי הַתּוֹרָה נִמְתָּקִין וְנִתְמַעֲטִין הַיִּסּוּרִים, וְגַם בְּזוֹ הַשָּׁעָה שֶׁעוֹסְקִין בָּהּ וּמִתְדַּבְּקִין וּמִתְקַשְּׁרִין בְּאוֹתִיּוֹתֶיהָ וְתֵבוֹתֶיהָ בִּמְתִיקוּת הַדַּעַת הַקָּדוֹשׁ, עַל יְדֵי זֶה מַרְגִּישִׁין חַיּוּת בְּזוֹ הַשָּׁעָה, וְגַם מוֹשֶׁכֶת טַעַם חַיּוּתָהּ גַּם כֵּן אֵיזֶה זְמַן. כֵּן אָחִי יְדִידִי זֶה כַּמָּה אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי מַסִּיתוֹ לְטוֹב, וּמְחַזְּקוֹ שֶׁיִּקַּח אֶת עַצְמוֹ לְתוֹרָה וְלִצְדָקָה. כֵּן עוּרִי נָא, הִתְעוֹרְרִי נָא בְּכָל פַּעַם מֵחָדָשׁ, צוּ זְשַׁארֶע אֵשׁ תְּשׁוּקַת פְּנִימִיּוּת לְבָבְךָ הַטּוֹב לְהִתְעוֹרֵר מֵחָדָשׁ לְתוֹרָה וְלִצְדָקָה, וּבְהַדֶּרֶךְ הַקָּדוֹשׁ אֲשֶׁר מוֹלִיךְ אוֹתָנוּ רַבֵּנוּ זֵכֶר צַדִּיק וְקָדוֹשׁ לִבְרָכָה, לְהַחֲיוֹת אֶת עַצְמֵנוּ בִּמְעַט הַטּוֹב אֲשֶׁר זוֹכִין לַחֲטֹף וּלְהַחֲיוֹת אֶת עַצְמוֹ בָּזֶה, וּלְהִשְׁתּוֹקֵק לַחֲטֹף עוֹד וּלְהַתְחִיל בְּכָל פַּעַם מֵחָדָשׁ בְּכָל לְבָבְךָ וּבְכָל נַפְשְׁךָ וּבְכָל מְאֹדֶךָ. וּלְקַיֵּם מַאֲמַר חֲכָמֵינוּ זַ"ל (בְּרָכוֹת נד.) עַל פָּסוּק וּבְכָל מְאֹדֶךָ בְּכָל מִדָּה וּמִדָּה שֶׁהוּא מוֹדֵד לְךָ הֱוֵי מוֹדֶה לוֹ בִּמְאֹד מְאֹד. כֵּן נִזְכֶּה לָזֶה בִּתְשׁוּקַת פְּנִימִיּוּת לְבָבוֹ הַטּוֹב, וּכְבִרְכַּת אוֹהֲבוֹ תָּמִים הַמְצַפֶּה לְהַצְלָחָתוֹ בְּגַשְׁמִיּוּת וּבְרוּחָנִיּוּת אָמֵן כֵּן יְהִי רָצוֹן.
I hereby inform you that my wife — at first she had experienced a change for the better, but now it has reversed and is going the other way, and her strength diminishes each day. And the expenses here are considerable — for I have had expenses here of fifty-four adumim (red coins). Nothing further for now — only life and peace.
נַחְמָן חַזָּן הַלֵּוִי

וְלוֹמַר שָׁלוֹם וּבְרָכָה לְחוֹתְנוֹ הַיָּקָר, מְאֹד הִנְנִי מִתְגַּעְגֵּעַ עַל בּוֹאוֹ לְשָׁלוֹם לְפֹה בַּיָּמִים הַלָּלוּ, וּבִפְרָט שֶׁהָיָה לִי יְדִיעָה מֵרַבִּי אַבֶּילֶי שֶׁתְּשׁוּקָתוֹ שֶׁיִּהְיֶה פֹּה עַל לַ"ג בָּעֹמֶר, וְכֵן יֹאמַר שָׁלוֹם לְכָל זֶרַע יִצְחָק שֶׁיִּחְיוּ.
From me, your brother, who loves your soul, who constantly seeks your welfare, and who longs to hear good tidings from you and to see you in life and in peace.
אַחַי וְרֵעַי נָשִׂימָה עַל לְבָבֵנוּ בְּכָל פַּעַם מֵחָדָשׁ אֲשֶׁר מִכָּל הַמְּרִירוּת שֶׁעוֹבֵר עַל כָּל אֶחָד וְאֶחָד בְּגוּף וָנֶפֶשׁ וּמָמוֹן, לֹא יִהְיֶה נִשְׁאָר מֵאִתָּנוּ כִּי אִם מְעַט הַטּוֹב שֶׁחוֹטְפִין מִזֶּה הָעוֹלָם, כְּמַאֲמַר הַמִּשְׁנָה הַנַּ"ל אֵין מְלַוִּין לוֹ לָאָדָם לֹא כֶּסֶף וְכוּ' כִּי אִם תּוֹרָה וּמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים. כֵּן נִזְכֶּה לְהִתְגַּבֵּר לַחֲטֹף בְּכָל פַּעַם כָּל זֹאת, וּלְשַׂמֵּחַ אֶת נַפְשׁוֹ וּלְהַחֲיוֹת אֶת עַצְמוֹ רַק בְּזֹאת הַתּוֹרָה. וְדַיְקָא עַל יְדֵי זֶה יַצְלִיחֵנוּ ה' גַּם בְּגַשְׁמִיּוּת כַּאֲוַת נַפְשְׁכֶם לְטוֹבָה אָמֵן כֵּן יְהִי רָצוֹן.

Be strong and courageous — for there is reward for your efforts, in this world and in the World to Come. Nachman, as above. Overview: Written just eleven days after Letter 2, this letter to Rebbe Nachman's brother Reb Yechiel Tzvi in Krementchuk is one of the most spiritually charged in the collection. Rebbe Nachman's brother was enduring fierce persecution from misnagdim — opponents of Chassidus — and Rebbe Nachman responds with passionate encouragement, a luminous parable, and a glimpse into the Tzaddik's own personal circumstances: his wife's worsening illness and mounting expenses. Wordplay note: The root ג-ד-ל (gadol — to grow great) appears three times in rapid succession in the original — "to elevate you… to increase your honor… to enlarge your mind" — and then again: "you will grow great and blossom." This deliberate repetition of the root intensifies the promise: every dimension of the person will be enlarged through the very affliction that seems to diminish him.
