The Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman · חיי מוהר"ן
(יב) בענין המפרסמים של שקר שנמצאים עכשו, שלפעמים נדמה להם שהם פועלים איזה דבר, כגון כשבאים אצלם בשביל בנים וכיוצא, ואחר כך נפקד אותו האדם בבנים ונתמלא משאלתו אזי הם תולים בעצמם שהם פעלו זאת. אמר משל כמו שאדם אחד הולך בדרך ופגע בזאב והיה מתירא ממנו, והושיט מקלו ועשה עם מקלו כדרך שעושין עם קנה שרפה שקורין ביקס (רובה), כאלו הוא רוצה לירות את הזאב עם מקלו כדי שיתירא הזאב ממנו. בתוך כך היה מורה אחד עם קני שרפה באמת והרג את הזאב ונדמה לזה שהושיט מקלו שהוא הרגו, והוא אינו יודע שנהרג הזאב על ידי זה שהושיט קנה שרפה באמת, כי בודאי אינם יכולים להרג את הזאב במקל. כך הוא ממש ענין הנ"ל. כי יש צדיקים אמתיים בעולם בכל דור ודור שהם פועלים הכל בתפלתם וכל הפקדות לטוב וכל הדברים שבעולם הכל על ידם. ואלו המפרסמים של שקר נדמה להם שהם פעלו זאת, והוא ממש כמו זה שאומר שהרג את הזאב עם מקלו כנ"ל, כי באמת הכל רק על ידי צדיקים אמתיים כי הם פועלים הכל, ומה שאחרים חושבים ומדמים זה הכל כנ"ל וכו':
(12.) Regarding the false-famous ones who exist now — who sometimes think that they are accomplishing something. For example when people come to them for children and the like, and afterwards that person is indeed blessed with children and his wish is fulfilled — they then attribute it to themselves that they accomplished this. He said a parable: "It is like a man going on the road who encountered a wolf and was afraid of it — and he extended his staff and made with his staff the motion of someone using a firearm, as if he wanted to shoot the wolf with his staff so it would be frightened and run away. And afterwards when he tells the story he says: I shot the wolf and it ran away."
