(קנה) פעם אחת עמדנו לפניו והגיע זמן סעדת הלילה והיה רוצה לאכל עמנו יחד ואני לא התפללתי ערבית עדין, והתחלתי להשמט ממנו ומן העולם שעמדו לפניו כדי לילך ולהתפלל ערבית. והוא זכרונו לברכה ראה זאת ושאל מה זאת והשיבו לו כי לא התפלל ערבית עדין. ענה ואמר איך אנו יכולין להמתין עליו עד שיתפלל, כי מי יודע מה יהיה נעשה ממנו על ידי התפלה, כי תפלה צריכין להתפלל במסירת נפש. ואם כן מי יודע מה יהיה נעשה ממנו. והבן הדברים כי כך צריכין באמת להתפלל במסירת נפש כזה ובבטול כזה עד שיוכל להיות שיהיה נעשה ממנו ענין אחר לגמרי על ידי התפלה:
(155.) Once we stood before him and the time of the evening meal arrived — and he wanted to eat with us together. And I had not yet prayed the evening prayer. And I began to slip away from him and from the people standing before him — in order to go and pray the evening prayer. And he o.b.m. saw this and asked what it was. And they told him I had not yet prayed the evening prayer. He answered and said: "How can we wait for him until he prays?" For who knows what would come to pass...
