[This letter opens mid-sentence in the source text.] …Who has merited to discern and to understand and to recognize the true truth — who has surpassed all people of his generation in nobility and in wisdom. And has found the true truth — the one and only in the world — which elevates from apostasy, from the very depths of the nethermost abyss, from the very ultimate of physical physicality — to above all spirituality. That you would be President over Israel in this orphaned generation. For with the greatness of your upright intellect and your pure and glorious tongue — you would teach the people this awesome and wondrous truth, which Hashem has revealed before your eyes through several causes and wondrous workings — these approximately seven years.

2

'לִקּוּטֵי הֲלָכוֹת': אֶבֶן הָעֵזֶר, פְּרִיָּה וּרְבִיָּה הֲלָכָה ה'.

2

And you would have mercy upon them with true mercy — and would open the eyes and the hearts of Israel — so that all would see and understand and recognize the hidden and concealed truth that is most secret from all eyes.

3

3

My dearest heart, Mr. Z. Shazar — who yearns and burns for the Tzadik, the aspect of Moshiach, who strengthens and fortifies the soul of Israel even in the very extremity of its lowliness and its darkness, within all the impurities and filths — and clarifies and reveals all the good that is found within it, and illuminates in his mind the sparkling of His G-dliness — abundant peace.

4

4

My dearest and most beloved, as my own heart — know that you do not leave my thoughts. Every day and at every time I arouse mercy before the Master of Mercy, that He have compassion upon you and gladden your soul with His salvation, that everything be transformed to good.

5

5

Pay heed well and do not forget all the beneficences of Hashem that He has bestowed upon you — such kindness and truth forever — for you have already merited to taste a little of the honeyed sweetness of the most wondrous true words, which give life to the soul of all life. And you have already merited for these several years to be counted on Rosh Hashana among the people of truth, who are joined to the true leader-Tzadik. I have hoped and waited for Hashem that He increase His kindness with you — that you merit also in this year to strive to break through all the obstacles and impediments, and to come for Rosh Hashana within the holy gathering of the true Tzadik who labors at the repair of our souls. And the essential thing is Rosh Hashana — as Rabbainu za.tza.l. said:

6

6

Which is the vitality and existence of all creation — and from it the final redemption will sprout for the people of Israel and for the entire world — that all will know Hashem and crown Him with the crown of kingship. "My Rosh Hashana surpasses everything. And it is a wonder to me — since those who are close to me believe in me, why do not all the people close to me take care that they should all be present for Rosh Hashana, not a single one missing? For my entire matter is only Rosh Hashana." And he warned that an announcement be made — that all who heed him and are close to him should be present for Rosh Hashana in his presence, not a single one missing. And so is his custom for all generations. "My Rosh Hashana is a great novelty. And Hashem Yisburach knows that this thing is not an inheritance from my fathers — rather, Hashem Yisburach gave this to me as a gift, that I know what Rosh Hashana is. It is not merely that you are all certainly dependent upon my Rosh Hashana — rather, even the entire world depends upon my Rosh Hashana." And he said that people can then receive rectifications — things that throughout the entire year it would not have been possible for them to receive rectification in any way whatsoever. Even so, on Rosh Hashana even they can receive rectification. Even though throughout the entire year even he himself za.tza.l. was unable to repair them — but on Rosh Hashana even they can receive rectifications. For he said that on Rosh Hashana he performs matters and rectifications that throughout the entire year even he himself is unable to perform. One person said before him that he would prefer to be with him on Shabbos Shuva rather than on Rosh Hashana — because he had no place to stand there in the beis medrash, and also had no good lodgings to eat and sleep, and because of this his mind was very confused and he was unable to pray with concentration. Therefore it seemed better to him to be with him at another time and not on Rosh Hashana. Rabbainu za.tza.l. answered him in these words: "Whether to eat or not to eat, whether to sleep or not to sleep, whether to pray or not to pray (meaning — not to pray with proper concentration) — the essential thing only is that you should be with me for Rosh Hashana, whatever may be." (Ya essin nit essin, ya shlofin nit shlofin, ya davvinen nit davvinen, abi di zolst bei mir zein Rosh Hashana). And if it seems difficult — why he insisted so greatly that one be with him specifically for Rosh Hashana — well, without this he is already questioned greatly, and this question will simply be one more difficulty in addition. On the last eve of Rosh Hashana, in Uman — we stood before him. He then asked about one man from Nemirov who had not come for Rosh Hashana. And the Rav Rabbi Naftali began to explain it away — but he did not accept the explanation, and was very displeased with him. And he said that there is great pity upon him — for he truly wished to be here for Rosh Hashana, but was prevented by several great obstacles, etc. Afterwards he answered and said in a strong voice, from the very depths of his heart: What shall I say to you? There is nothing greater than this — meaning, than being with him for Rosh Hashana. (Vi azoi zol ich eich zogen — keingressers derfun iz nit far an in — in a very trembling voice). From the abundance of his holy words then on this matter, and from his awesome movements at that time — we learned that his will was strong that one be with him in Uman for Rosh Hashana always, even after his passing. And that there is nothing greater than this. The essential thing is that the entirety of Jewish identity depends upon this — to seek and to request and to search after the true Rebbe and a true friend, who will show and teach him true ways and counsels, deep counsels — how to draw close to Hashem Yisburach in every place and at every time.
