Kitzur Likutay Moharan
Every person of Israel — even a great Tzadik — needs to have some distress every day. And one who has greater knowledge — one's distress is greater. And through eating in holiness and fear of Heaven — through this one sweetens this distress — so that it not overpower — G-d forbid. [For tefillin are the aspect of the minds. And the strap [r'tzu'ah] is the aspect of fear. And this is that the strap passes through the ma'avarsa [the passage of the "tefillin" box] — for the fear passes through the minds and the tefillin. For: ""the beginning of wisdom is the fear of Hashem"" [Psalms 111:10]. And if there is no fear — there is no wisdom. And from this aspect of the strap — some distress comes to every person of Israel every day. And one who has greater knowledge — one's distress is greater. For the distress is ramified from the fear — and the fear is proportional to the knowledge and mind which are the aspect of tefillin. And the rectification and sweetening of this distress coming from the above-mentioned strap — is through eating in holiness and fear of Heaven — see the main text.] Through eating in holiness and fear of Heaven — through this the mouth becomes in the aspect of the stature of a human being. And one can merit thereby in reward — to the higher ascent — to the aspect of the "Shechinah" speaking from within one's throat. But one whose eating is not in holiness — then one's mouth that eats is in the category of a living creature. And one is literally like an animal — G-d forbid. The primary fear comes and approaches a person at the time of eating. Therefore one must guard greatly to eat in holiness — and to draw upon oneself the fear that comes to one then. And through this one merits all the above in §1 and §2.
