Prayers at the Western Wall; "Do Not Abandon Yourself" — The Joy Teaching
מכתבי שמואל - Michtevay Shmuel Volume 2
My dear precious friend — I received your dear and beloved letter — very greatly. And also the letter through R' Shlomo, may he live, we also received — each one. And what shall I say to you, my dear brother, bound to my heart? It is impossible to describe to you the depth of my sorrow and anguish of soul from this. And our strength is only in our mouths [אין כוחינו אלא בפה — "our strength is only in speech/prayer" — a Midrashic statement about the Jewish people's primary weapon being prayer; see Bereishis Rabbah 65:20]. And we are doing what is incumbent upon us — praying for you with compassion at the most holy places, at the Western Wall, etc. And may Hashem send you complete healing very soon, speedily in the truest sense — in the merit of Rabbainu the Holy one, Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman. Amen. [Yiddish:] "Holy, precious, righteous, faithful brother — oh (Gott!) — do not abandon yourself in any way! Remember well: the holy Rebbe writes in the holy Sefer HaMiddos: repair of the body takes precedence over repair of the soul. And the holy Rebbe, of blessed memory, said: when the baal davar can find no counsel against an upright person — he makes him ill. Therefore one must under no circumstances yield to the baal davar. One must strengthen oneself with all one's strength. One must remember what the holy Rebbe brings in the holy Likutay Moharan: it is a great mitzvah to be always in joy — even through foolish matters. And Rabbainu the Holy one said explicitly: it appears that one cannot be revived except through foolish matters, etc."
