מכתבי שמואל - Michtevay Shmuel Volume 2

Peace and blessing and all good forever — to my beloved dear father — the crown of my head — the apple of my eye — the delight of my heart — and all my vitality — the distinguished and great rabbi, pillar of Torah and awe — etc. — the renowned Torah scholar, our Master R' Yeshayahu HaLevi Horowitz, may he live and be strong.

After warmly greeting you with great love — I hereby inform you of our welfare. Presumably you received my letters — and the letter through R' Shlomo Elyach, may he live. And that he has already received the fifty dollars. And I have now received your two letters — with the letter to the director of the Yeshivah Chayyei Olam — R' Yisrael Rubin and R' Fishel — on Thursday of Parashas Beshalach. And presumably they will reply to this. And I am waiting every day to receive the government permit for the printing press — and I will be able to begin working in it [R' Shmuel is apparently involved in setting up a printing press for Breslov publications in Jerusalem].

And I ask you once more — to hurry and complete the mitzvah properly: to send me the last twenty dollars for the printing press. And you have no complaint against me for this — for I am not at all at fault for this — for the factory was not able to compress the types and sent a few letters more of each sort. And this costs twenty dollars — as I have written to you several times. Please, please — hurry in this — for the time for payment has already come — and I fear that I may, G‑d forbid, suffer from this. Therefore — please, please — hurry in this. And you understand enough. Nothing more is new. From me — your son who awaits the salvation of Hashem: Shmuel HaLevi Horowitz. My dear wife warmly greets you with great love — and all of us warmly greet you. And peace to my dear mother, may she live — and peace to all of you with great love. And we wish you a joyful Purim and a kosher and joyful Pesach.

Warm greetings from the depths of the heart to the honored self of our dear friend, the distinguished R' Yehudah Leib Stein, may he live — a dear and elevated companion. As your honor has a large share in the matter of the printing press — that my father, the distinguished rabbi, may he live, established for me — but since 20 dollars are lacking to complete it — and this is not my fault, for the factory was unable to compress the types and sent a few more letters of each sort until it amounts to 20 more dollars. And the time for payment has already come — and I have no way to pay the 20 dollars. And I may suffer great loss — more than double and quadruple. Therefore I make my request: please — complete the mitzvah — to help my father in this — that he be able to send me the above sum quickly — as early as possible. And "the mitzvah is called only by the name of the one who completes it." [Talmud Bavli, Sotah 13b] And "the end of a matter is better than its beginning." [Ecclesiastes 7:8] And in the merit of this — may he merit a good old age — fresh and flourishing [Psalms 92:15]. And may he merit to see the building of Zion and Jerusalem. Amen. From me — his friend forever — who blesses him and prays for him — and wishes him the festivals of Purim and Pesach — kosher and joyful in the fullest sense: Shmuel HaLevi Horowitz. Please write me his mother's name — so that I can pray for him every day at the Western Wall — specifically and completely.
