And the essential thing: do not despair yourself of the cry — ever. And cry out and implore before G-d always from the depths of the heart — in the aspect of: "Pour out your heart like water before the face of G-d" [Lamentations 2:19]. Through which we will all merit to return to Him, blessed be He. And all of this we engage in drawing [l'hamshich] on Hoshana Rabbah. And therefore we engage then with the willow branches [aravei nachal] — which allude to the sinners of Israel — to fulfill in them also: "Do not be contemptuous of any person" — and to judge them to the scale of merit. And this is the aspect of what is said on Hoshana Rabbah — Mishneh Torah — which revolves and orbits entirely around this very axis: to warn Israel that in all that passes over them, etc. — even so, they should never despair of themselves from the cry. For G-d will not abandon His people — and His compassion never ends. And after all the sins and provocations with which they provoke before Him, blessed be He, in every generation — even so, the right hand of G-d is exalted. And therefore one can always draw close and return to Him, blessed be He, from whatever place one is. The essential joining of two things that are very far from one another — which are like two opposites — the essential joining of them is through melody [nigun] — as explained in the inner teachings. And therefore the essential attachment [devekus] to G-d from this very low and physical and lowly world is through melody and song. As one can see plainly: that even a person who is very far from G-d and is on the very lowest rung — even so, most of the time through melody he is awakened toward G-d and reminds himself where he stands in the world. Only one must be careful not to hear melody from wicked and frivolous musicians — who are very commonly found now. For this can harm him, G-d forbid, very greatly. But through melody from people who are truly upright — who direct their hearts in truth toward G-d — or when one plays some melody oneself and his intention is for the sake of Heaven — one can be awakened through this very greatly toward G-d. For the essential joining and attachment from this world — the physical world — to G-d — who is immeasurably exalted and elevated — especially for one who has sinned and been greatly distanced from his Father in Heaven — is through melody and song. Which is the aspect of all the songs and praises spoken to G-d. And for this reason King David, peace be upon him, composed the entire book of Psalms — which encompasses all ten types of melody. For he is the aspect of Mashiach — who engages in repairing the blemish of the broken Tablets. Through which all the destructions came. And David — who is Mashiach — who engages in repairing this, which is the repair of all the worlds — therefore composed the book of Psalms encompassing all ten types of melody. For through the ten types of melody the broken Tablets are repaired. For through melody for the sake of Heaven — one attaches and joins the heart to G-d from wherever one is. Until one can receive the light of the letters of the Torah — in the aspect of: "write them upon the tablet of your heart" [Proverbs 3:3]. And likewise — commensurate with how much the heart is drawn after G-d — so too there is the power for the Tablets to bear the light of the letters of the Torah. Which is the aspect of the repair of the broken Tablets — which came about through the aspect of the letters flying off, as our Sages of blessed memory said. And this is the aspect of: "Bind them upon your throat" [Proverbs 3:3] — specifically [davka] — the aspect of the throat and larynx from which the voice emerges. There should be bound in it the words of Torah. That is, his melody should be for the sake of Heaven. And through this: "write them upon the tablet of your heart" — as above. And through this one merits to be saved from the forgetting of Torah — and merits to see the light of Torah in perfection in the aspect of a life-giving remedy [sam chayyim].
