ע AYIN — Numerical Value: 70 | The letter of the eye, of the 70 faces of Torah | 24 source entries [Translator's Note] Ayin means "eye" — the organ of perception and of the evil eye. The 70 faces of Torah correspond to the 70 nations and to the 70 elders of Israel. Lines 22–24 form a cluster around the word eisev (grass/herb). Hebrew EntryEnglish Translation & ExplanationSource ע = מל Gematria The letter Ayin (ע = 70) = gematria of מל (mal, "circumcision" = 40+30 = 70). [Cross-reference from Section 13.] The eye of wisdom and the covenant of circumcision share their number — both are gateways of perception and of the divine covenant. Likutay Mooharan II:2; 6 ע"ב — לבם Gematria The Name ע"ב [72] = gematria of לבם (libam, "their heart" = 72). [Cross-reference from Section 12.] The highest Divine Name and the heart of Israel are numerically one. Likutay Mooharan II:83 ע"ב ג' פעמים — ריו Gematria The Name ע"ב [72] three times (72 × 3 = 216) = gematria of ריו (Reish-Yud-Vov = 216) — the numerical value that encodes the form of the letter Alef and the sefirah of Gevurah (strength). Three times the highest Name = the shape of the first letter. Likutay Mooharan 46 ע"ב — י׳ י"ק יק"ו יקו"ק Gematria The 72 "niminin" (hairs / threads — a kabbalistic term for the finest emanations) correspond to the progressive expansions י׳ י"ק יק"ו יקו"ק, which together sum to 72. [Cross-reference from Section 10.] Likutay Mooharan II:8; 1 ע"ב + ריו ב' פעמים — תקעו Gematria The Name ע"ב [72] plus ריו [216] twice (72 + 216 + 216 = 504) = gematria of תִּקְעוּ (tik'u, "blow [the shofar]!" [Psalms 81:4]). The shofar blast is the sum of the highest Name and the doubled form of Gevurah — a cry of divine power. Likutay Mooharan 46 עולת — תולע Tziroof Olas (עולת, "burnt-offering") — its letters are a permutation of תולע (tola, "worm / crimson worm"). The burnt-offering that rises entirely to G-d and the lowly worm that produces the crimson dye share their letters — the highest sacrifice and the most humble creature are one. [The olah offering is entirely consumed — nothing is kept for human use. Its letters spell the worm that produces tola'as shani (crimson dye), used in the Temple and in the purification ceremony. Height and lowliness, total devotion and humble service, are the same letters rearranged.] Likutay Mooharan 28:3 עון מש — שמעון Tziroof Avon mash (עון מש — "iniquity of touch/dissolution") — these letters are the letters of שמעון (Shimon — the tribe of Shimon). The name of Shimon contains and transforms the root of iniquity through the power of hearing (shema). [Shimon comes from the root shama — to hear. The letters of avon mash (transgression of touch/dissolution) rearranged form the name of the tribe whose correction comes through holy listening. Iniquity is transformed by the act of true hearing.] Sichos HaRan 44 ע'ושה מ'לאכיו ר'וחות — עמר Roshay Saveivos The first letters of "He makes His angels winds" (ע׳ושה מ׳לאכיו ר׳וחות) [Psalms 104:4] spell עמר (omer — the measure of grain offered on the second day of Pesach). [Cross-reference: Omer → same verse, listed below.] Likutay Mooharan II:5; 9 ע'ושה ש'לום ב'מרומיו — עשב Roshay Saveivos The first letters of "He Who makes peace in His heights" (ע׳ושה ש׳לום ב׳מרומיו) [Job 25:2 — said at the end of the Shmoneh Esrai] spell עשב (eisev, "grass / herb"). Peace made in the heights produces the grass of the earth. [Cross-reference: Eisev cluster below.] Likutay Mooharan 39 עז — טל ב' פעמים Gematria Oz (עז, "strength" = 77) = dew (tal = 39) twice plus the kollel (39+39+1 = 79... see source for precise calculation with kollel). [Cross-reference from Section 9.] Strength is double-dew — the renewal of life twice given. Likutay Mooharan 11:4 ע'ין ל'א ר'אתה א'לקים ז'ולתך י'עשה Roshay Saveivos The first letters of "an eye has not seen, O G-d, besides You, what You shall do" [Isaiah 64:3] spell אליעזר (Eliezer). [Cross-reference from Section 1.] Likutay Mooharan II:7; 13 ע'יניך ר'ואות א'ת מ'וריך Roshay Saveivos The first letters of "Your eyes shall see your teachers" (ע׳יניך ר׳ואות א׳ת מ׳וריך) [Isaiah 30:20] = the first letters of א׳ש ר׳וח מ׳ים ע׳פר — "fire, wind, water, earth." [Cross-reference from Section 1.] The vision of one's teachers is made of the four elements of creation. Likutay Mooharan II:66 ע'יר ו'קדיש מ'ן ש'מיא נ'חית Roshay Saveivos The first letters of "a Watcher, a Holy One, descended from heaven" (ע׳יר ו׳קדיש מ׳ן ש׳מיא נ׳חית) [Daniel 4:10 — the angelic watcher in Nevuchadnezar's dream] spell שמעון (Shimon). This verse also opens Likutay Mooharan. [The opening verse of Rebbe Nachman's teachings — an Aramaic verse about the holy watcher who descends from heaven — contains in its first letters the name of Shimon bar Yochai, the master of the Zohar. The watcher who descends from heaven is Shimon, and Shimon's Torah is what descends into the world through Rebbe Nachman.] Opening of Likutay Mooharan; Chayay Mooharan §169 על השחיטה Gematria "Regarding the slaughter" (על השחיטה) = gematria of the first letters of the verse ב׳זעת א׳פיך ת׳אכל ל׳חם together with its four words. [Cross-reference from Section 6.] Likutay Mooharan 37:6 עמלק Tziroof Amalek (עמלק) — its letters are a permutation of מעקל (ma'kel, "the crooked path"). [Cross-reference from Section 13.] Sofay Saveivos The final letters of שב׳ע יפו׳ל צדי׳ק וק׳ם — "seven times does the righteous one fall and rise" [Proverbs 24:16] — spell עמלק (Amalek). The power of Amalek is encoded in the verse about the righteous one's falling and rising — Amalek is the force that causes the falls; yet the righteous one always rises. [The verse about the tzadik who falls seven times and rises is precisely the verse whose final letters spell Amalek — the enemy who causes the falls. But the verse's meaning defeats Amalek: the tzadik always rises again. This entry appears at the end of the story of the wise man and the simpleton in Sipuray Maasios.] Likutay Mooharan II:5; 11; II:19; end of story of the wise man and simpleton עמר Roshay Saveivos Omer (עמר, the grain measure offered on the second day of Pesach) — first letters of ע׳ושה מ׳לאכיו ר׳וחות: "He makes His angels winds". [Cross-reference from above.] Likutay Mooharan II:5; 9 ענן Roshay Saveivos Anan (ענן, "cloud") — first letters of נ׳דיבי ע׳מים נ׳אספו: "The nobles of the peoples have gathered." [Cross-reference from Section 14.] Likutay Mooharan II:5; 15 עקב — ב' פעמים אלקים Gematria Aikev (עקב, "heel / consequence" = 172) = Elokim twice (86 × 2 = 172). [Cross-reference from Section 1.] The heel — the lowest extremity, the place that follows — numerically contains the double force of divine judgment. Likutay Mooharan 41 עָ של קליפה — ש"ע נהורין Gematria The Ayin (ע) of the impure side (klipah) = 70 — and corresponding to it, on the holy side, are the 370 lights (ש"ע נהורין) of the Divine countenance. The impure 70 is overwhelmed fivefold by the holy 370. [The 70 faces of impurity are faced by 370 lights of holiness — a ratio of 1:5.28. The divine radiance vastly outshines the impure eye. The 70 of Ayin (evil eye) is surrounded and dissolved by the 370 lights of the divine face.] Likutay Mooharan 41 ערף — גימטריא של "שבת נחמו" Gematria Oref (ערף, "back of the neck" = 350) = gematria of the first letters of the phrase ש׳בת נ׳חמו (Shabbos Nachamu — the Shabbos of Consolation, the Shabbos after Tisha B'Av): Shin(300) + Nun(50) = 350. [The back of the neck — associated with stubbornness — has the same gematria as the initials of the Shabbos of Consolation. The very stiffness that caused the exile contains within it the seeds of the consolation: 350 is both the obstacle and the comfort.] Likutay Mooharan II:85 עשב Multiple Eisev (עשב, "grass / herb") yields three connections: (1) Notarikon Eisev = ע"ב שין (Ayin-Beis Shin) — the Name of 72 (ע"ב) together with the letter Shin (= fire). Grass contains the highest Name and the letter of fire; (2) Roshay Saveivos Eisev — first letters of ב׳ת ע׳ין ש׳ין: "Bais, Ayin, Shin" [cross-reference from Section 2]; (3) Roshay Saveivos Eisev — first letters of ע׳ושה ש׳לום ב׳מרומיו: "He Who makes peace in His heights" [Job 25:2]. [Three dimensions of grass: it contains the Name of 72 and the fire-letter Shin; its letters come from Bais, Ayin, Shin; and its acronym spells divine peace. The humblest vegetation on earth carries the highest Name, the fire of heaven, and the peace of the heights.] Likutay Mooharan 47; 39; Chayay Mooharan §92 [Translator's Summary — Section 16, Ayin — 24 source entries fully covered] The Ayin section is dominated by the number 72 and its expansions: three times 72 = 216 = the form of Alef; 72 + 216×2 = the shofar blast. The burnt-offering (olah) as a permutation of the worm (tola) — the highest sacrifice and the most humble creature. The opening verse of Likutay Mooharan containing Shimon bar Yochai in its first letters. And the beautiful teaching that grass (eisev) contains the Name of 72, the letter of fire, and the peace of the heights.
