Most of the corruptions of the generations come through the compassion of the Sitra Achara. For the Sitra Achara clothes itself in certain wicked people — and they gather together and busy themselves with the welfare of the masses and make themselves as though they have compassion upon them and are working for their benefit. But in truth all the goodness of the wicked is evil for the Tzadikim — for "the mercies of the wicked are cruel." And from this came the entire sin of the Golden Calf, as explained in the inner teachings. Especially the corruptions found now in our generations through our many sins — through the wicked of Israel who dig to introduce the foreign into the house of Hashem — to interpret the Torah according to their external wisdoms. And they wish to entice and incite and coerce Israel to follow, G-d forbid, their bitter and alien ways as is visible to all — and the many who are drawn after them have completely thrown off the yoke. And yet they brazenly clothe all their wickedness in compassion — as though they have compassion for the youth of Israel and wish to guide them in the straight path according to their Torah interpretations — toward the pit of destruction etc. And they say all their intention is for the good of Israel and that they have compassion upon them etc. And all this flows from the Sitra Achara drawing nourishment from the compassion. And through this the desire for licentiousness intensifies and prayer is corrupted — for one can no longer pray in the mode of mercy and supplication. And the essential rectification for all this is through the true Tzadikim, as explained in the inner teachings. And see also further regarding the compassion of the Sitra Achara — and how through this people are brought into great toil and burden for the sake of livelihood — and at the end of all their toil they carry nothing away, as explained there. Translator's Summary — Rachmanus (Compassion) This single-entry chapter is a sharp warning: compassion itself — the most essential human attribute — can be hijacked by the Sitra Achara. The pattern is ancient: those who caused the Golden Calf did so in the name of the people's welfare. And the same pattern repeats throughout history when movements that claim to act out of care for the Jewish people lead them away from Torah. The Hebrew verse chosen for the chapter's opening — rachmei resha'im achzari, "the mercies of the wicked are cruel" — captures this precisely: the cruelest acts are often wrapped in the language of compassion. The antidote is the true Tzadik — who knows the difference between genuine mercy rooted in holiness and the pseudo-mercy that serves the Sitra Achara. — This summary is from the translator.
