Giving charity (tzedakah) saves a person from transgression. The mechanism: anyone who has mercy upon other beings — God has mercy upon him (Shabbat 151b). And once Heaven has mercy on a person, it necessarily withholds from him any obstacles or temptations toward transgression — because God's mercy means protecting him from falling. There is an important qualification from the Talmud (Berachot 33a): one who lacks understanding (da'at) — it is actually forbidden to have excessive mercy upon him. This is because mercy extended to someone who has no understanding can enable and empower his destructive path rather than helping him. True mercy must be directed properly — it saves and elevates only when given to those who have the capacity to receive and use it constructively.
