T117 PNC - Hard to Sleep Motzaei Shabbat — Elijah's Revelation Begins (1 seg)

Why is it difficult to sleep on Motzaei Shabbat (Saturday night)? The reason: the revelation of Elijah the Prophet begins at that time. As the Talmud (Eruvin 43b) teaches, Elijah does not come on Shabbat itself or on Erev Shabbat — but he may come on Motzaei Shabbat. From the very moment Shabbat ends, the possibility of Elijah's appearance becomes active in the world. The soul senses this awakening — the heightened spiritual energy and the proximity of redemptive light — and this sensitivity makes it difficult to settle into sleep. The restlessness of Motzaei Shabbat is therefore not mere habit or dietary excess from the third meal; it is a profound spiritual wakefulness, a trembling of the soul at the nearness of the messianic herald. One who understands this can use that wakefulness for Torah study and prayer rather than fighting it.
