Opening verse: 'And it shall be, because (eikev) you will listen' (Deuteronomy 7:12). When there are troubles — whether communal or individual — dancing becomes impossible. For when divine judgments (dinim) prevail and dominate, they are handed over to the agents of judgment, who are called 'runners' (ratzim) in the Zohar (Bereishit 43a). These agents of judgment run and execute the decrees. The 'heels' (akev, from the same root as eikev) of a person — the lowest, most material part — are the place from which these runners take hold. But through dancing, through the elevation of the feet and heels in joy, the person lifts his 'heels' above the domain of the runners of judgment. This is why dancing is a spiritual weapon against troubles: it elevates the very point where the agents of judgment try to seize hold, transforming the heel (akev) into the vehicle of listening (eikev) and blessing.
