One who is socially or commercially mixed in with non-Jews — who has businesses with them, give-and-take dealings — must take spiritual care. Rebbe Nachman is not condemning the engagement; he acknowledges it is a real-life necessity. But the engagement creates a spiritual exposure that requires conscious counter-measures. The mixing is not neutral. One must intentionally re-anchor oneself in Torah and prayer when returning from such engagements, lest the surrounding influence subtly recolor one's inner world. Awareness is the first defense.
