Pettek Nanach Running Commentary on Likutey Moharan
Beginner: **The mahus of mach'as kapayim bi'tefilah** (striking palm-to-palm during prayer): through it, **the bechinah of kenafayim (wings) is awakened** — from where dibbur comes. Source: **"u'va'al kenafayim yagid davar"** (Kohelet 10:20) — 'and the one-with-wings tells the matter'; and **"vi'dei adam mi'tachas kenafeihem"** (Yechezkel 10:21) — 'and the hands of a man were beneath their wings' (the chayos of the Merkavah have human-like hands under their wings). **The pairing hands↔wings** in these two pesukim establishes the mechanism: **when a person awakens his yadayim, the kenafayim are awakened** — specifically the **kanfei ha'ri'ah** (wings of the lungs; the ri'ah/lung is shaped with wing-like lobes), from where dibbur is formed. **But still one must prepare and rectify the peh to receive the dibbur within**. The kenafei ha'ri'ah can generate the dibbur, but without a properly formed peh to shape it, the dibbur cannot exit clearly. **Through striking kaf el kaf — the peh is formed**. **The mathematics**: each hand has **5 etzba'os** (fingers). When one strikes the 5 fingers of yad yamin against the 5 fingers of yad s'mol, there are **5 × 5 = 25** ohros (lights) generated. And when yad s'mol strikes yad yamin: **another 5 × 5 = 25**. Together: **25 + 25 = 50** — the bechinah of the **50 sha'arei binah** and of the **yovel**. **This is the bechinah of the 50 yetzi'os Mitzrayim** mentioned in the Torah — because **"via the bechinah of yovel Israel left the exile of Mitzrayim"** (Zohar Shemos 46). The **ikkar galus Mitzrayim was that dibbur was in galus** — hence **Moshe was k'vad peh** (heavy of mouth, Shemos 4:10); and **via the geulah, the bechinah of peh was formed**. Thus it emerges that **through the 50 sha'arei binah, the peh is formed**. **The pasuk**: **"mi sam peh la'adam"** (Shemos 4:11) — 'who placed a mouth in man?' **"Mi"** dayka — the word **"mi"** (מי) spells 50 (mem=40, yud=10), which is the **50 sha'arei binah**. So the pasuk itself says: through the **mi** (=50) is the **peh** placed in man. Rabbeinu's chiddush: through **mach'as kaf (5 fingers of right against 5 of left + 5 of left against 5 of right = 50)**, the **bechinah of mi is formed**, and through it — the **peh is placed**, as the pasuk says **"mi sam peh la'adam."** **The full circuit**: 1. **Hands awaken** (via mach'as kapayim in tefilah). 2. **Wings awaken** — kenafei ha'ri'ah (per Kohelet + Yechezkel pair). 3. **Dibbur forms** in the lungs (from the wings). 4. **Peh is rectified** (via the 50 generated by 5×5+5×5, which is the **mi** of the pasuk). 5. **Peh receives and articulates** the dibbur clearly — **"u'va'al kenafayim yagid davar."** **The empirical proof**: 'all this we see by the senses — the yadayim are **opposite (k'neged) the kanfei ha'ri'ah**.' Because of this, the poskim ruled in halachah (**Yoreh De'ah siman 53**): **"nishbar ha'gaf samuch la'guf — treifah"** — 'if the wing [of a bird] is broken close to the body, the animal is a treifah.' Why? Because certainly, when the wing breaks close to the body, **the ri'ah is perforated by it** — the halachic ruling assumes the exact anatomical correspondence between wing/hand and ri'ah that Rabbeinu is teaching. **The practical takeaway**: mach'as kapayim in tefilah is not merely an emotional gesture — it is a **cosmic operation**: it activates the kanfei ha'ri'ah (generating dibbur), rectifies the peh (via the 50 sha'arei binah = 50 yetzi'os Mitzrayim = yovel), and enables the tefilah's articulation to ascend cleanly. Silent tefilah without mach'as kaf is missing the precise trigger that awakens the wings. Intermediate: **Mach'as kapayim** in tefilah: (1) awakens **kenafayim** (Koh 10:20 "u'va'al kenafayim yagid davar"; Yech 10:21 "vi'dei adam mi'tachas kenafeihem") — **kanfei ha'ri'ah** source of dibbur. (2) Rectifies **peh**: 5×5 + 5×5 = **50 = mi = sha'arei binah = yovel** (Zohar Shem 46: 50 yetzi'os Mitzrayim). Moshe k'vad peh = dibbur b'galus; geulah → peh formed. **"Mi sam peh"** (Shem 4:11): mi (מי=50) → peh. Empirical: **YD 53** — wing broken near body = treifah (ri'ah perforated). Full circuit: hands→wings→dibbur→peh→clear articulation.
