"And for all the mighty hand and for all the great awe..." [Devarim 34:12]

Theme: Love and Awe [Ahavah and Yirah] — inseparable; Moshe's charge to Israel; the Shechina nesting within the Tzaddik

I. Love and Awe — Bound Together

"The mighty hand" — this is Love [Ahavah]. "The great awe" — this is Awe [Yirah]. For there is no love without awe and no awe without love — they are bound one with the other and joined one with the other. The Hand — this is Love. "The mighty" — the Awe encompassed in it. "The Awe" — this is Yirah. "The great" — the Love encompassed in it. And one who has no love and awe is not fitting to come before the King. And Moshe warned Israel: "And now Israel, what does Hashem your G-d ask of you, but to fear...and to love" [Devarim 10:12].

And one who has fear and love — the Holy One and His Shechina rest upon him; and if not — they do not rest upon him. And Moshe showed more fear and love than all the people of the world. And one who has fear and love — it is said of him: "The bird also found a house..." [Tehillim 84:4] — the Shechina nests within the Tzaddik. But one who has no fear and love — the Holy One and the Shechina depart from there — and what remains is merely fear of punishment, and love of good. But one who truly cleaves to the Holy One: "to love Hashem...and to cleave to Him" [Devarim 11:22] — truly.
