On Rosh HaShanah one must be wise and think only good thoughts, that Hashem Yisburach will do good for us, etc.[40] And one must be joyful on Rosh HaShanah. Also one must cry on Rosh HaShanah.[41] On Rosh HaShanah on the first day, one must minimize speech greatly, greatly. And he said that a great person must be more precise in this, and therefore he himself does not recite on the first day even the liturgical poems [piyut] except for those composed by Rabbi Elazar HaKalir,[42] but the rest of the piyut he does not recite — because a great person must be more precise then, to not speak any word that is not necessary.
