גַּם אָז כְּשֶׁדִּבַּרְתִּי מֵאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, סִפֵּר לִי אֶחָד מֵאַנְשֵׁי-שְׁלוֹמֵנוּ שֶׁהָיָה אֵצֶל רַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה בְּעֵת שֶׁכְּבָר אָחַז בְּדֶרֶךְ נְסִיעָתוֹ הַקְּדוֹשָׁה לִנְסֹעַ לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְנִמְצָא אָז אִישׁ אֶחָד מֵאַנְשֵׁי-שְׁלוֹמֵנוּ שֶׁהָיָה אִישׁ עָשִׁיר קְצָת וּמְיֻחָס גָּדוֹל, וְנִתְאַוָּה מְאד לִנְסֹעַ עִם רַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהִרְבָּה רֵעִים עַל רַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה לְבַקֵּשׁ עֲבוּרוֹ שֶׁיִּקַּח אוֹתוֹ עִמּוֹ לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְנוֹדַע לְרַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה עִנְיָן זֶה עָנָה וְאָמַר רַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה לְהָאִישׁ הַנַּ"ל אַתָּה חָפֵץ לִנְסֹעַ לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, מִפְּנֵי מָה אֵין אַתָּה נוֹסֵעַ הֵשִׁיב הָאִישׁ הַנַּ"ל אִם תִּקְחוּ אוֹתִי עִמָּכֶם אֶסַּע עִמָּכֶם מִיָּד עָנָה רַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה וְאָמַר לוֹ מַה טַּעַם יֵשׁ לְךָ שֶׁאַתָּה רוֹצֶה לִנְסֹעַ לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, בְּוַדַּאי מֻכְרָח שֶׁיֵּשׁ לְךָ טַעַם כִּי הֲלא גַּם יִשְׁמְעֵאלִים וְעַרְבִיִּים נוֹסְעִים לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְכוּ' וְהֵשִׁיב לוֹ מַה שֶּׁהֵשִׁיב
And behold — throughout that summer — which was the summer of 5581 mentioned above — all my thoughts were: that immediately when I merited to complete the printing I would travel immediately to Eretz Yisroel — that is: I would be in Uman for Rosh Hashana — and immediately after Rosh Hashana I would travel from Uman to Odessa and from there to Eretz Yisroel. But when I was in Uman for Rosh Hashana with the books — after Rosh Hashana — the obstacles multiplied. And there were also obstacles because of money. And I also still needed to be at home for the completion of the books that still required arranging. And other affairs I was compelled to attend to. And because of all this I was compelled to return home — and did not travel immediately.
וְהִנֵּה אֵינִי זוֹכֵר סִפּוּר הַדְּבָרִים הֵיטֵב אֲבָל הָעִקָּר מַה שֶּׁנִּצְרָךְ לָנוּ מִסִּפּוּר זֶה הוּא מַה שֶּׁשָּׁמַעְתִּי מֵהָאִישׁ הַנַּ"ל שֶׁאַחַר כָּךְ נִזְדַּעְזַע רַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה, וְהָפַךְ פָּנָיו מֵאִישׁ הַנַּ"ל וְדִבֵּר אֶל הָעוֹלָם בְּהִתְלַהֲבוּת גָּדוֹל וְכָל דְּבָרָיו הָיוּ כְּגַחֲלֵי אֵשׁ כְּדַרְכּוֹ וְעָנָה וְאָמַר כְּשֶׁרוֹצִים בֶּאֱמֶת לָבוֹא לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל יאמַר אִם אֶקַּח אוֹתוֹ יִסַּע, כָּךְ רוֹצִים לָבוֹא לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל הֲלא כְּשֶׁרוֹצִים לָבוֹא לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל צְרִיכִין לֵילֵךְ רַגְלִי כִּי הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ אָמַר לְאַבְרָהָם לֶךְ לְךָ מֵאַרְצְךָ וּמִמּוֹלַדְתְּךָ וְכוּ' אֶל הָאָרֶץ לֵךְ דַּיְקָא שֶׁצְּרִיכִין לֵילֵךְ רַגְלִי מַמָּשׁ כְּדֵי לִזְכּוֹת לָבוֹא לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאָמַר זאת בְּהִתְלַהֲבוּת גָּדוֹל מְאד
And in the meantime — Tishrei passed and the winter days arrived. And then certainly it was impossible to travel to Eretz Yisroel. And also in the meantime — between Yom Kippur and Sukkos — Rabbi David mentioned above passed through the holy community of Tultshin — and returned to Eretz Yisroel. And I was unable to travel with him then. And all my thoughts had been that I would travel with him together. And now I was unable to travel with him — and I was delayed at home. And also at that time the wars of the Greeks [the Greek War of Independence] were heard of. And everyone said that it was impossible now to travel to Eretz Yisroel. And also Rabbi David mentioned above — who was an emissary of the Kollel — and the other emissaries: the Rav of Apta did not wish to allow them to travel to Eretz Yisroel because of the dangers mentioned above. Only after many entreaties — since all the poor of Eretz Yisroel had their eyes dependent on the arrival of the emissaries — he was compelled to allow them. And in truth they did not travel from Istanbul by sea — only overland. And they had very, very great expenses — all because of the dangers of the wars of the Greek rebellion.
וְהִנֵּה דִּבּוּרִים אֵלּוּ שֶׁזָּכִיתִי לִשְׁמעַ אָז חִזְּקוּ אֶת לִבִּי מְאד בְּעִנְיַן הַנְּסִיעָה לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל כִּי בְּכָל פַּעַם וּפַעַם שֶׁאֲנִי זוֹכֶה לִשְׁמעַ אֵיזֶה דִּבּוּר בְּעָלְמָא שֶׁיָּצָא מִפִּי רַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה מַה שֶּׁלּא שָׁמַעְתִּי עֲדַיִן, יָקָר בְּעֵינַי מְאד מִפָּז וּמִפְּנִינִים מִכָּל-שֶׁכֵּן וְכָל-שֶׁכֵּן עַתָּה כְּשֶׁזָּכִיתִי לִשְׁמעַ דָּבָר חָדָשׁ בְּעִתּוֹ מַה טּוֹב וּמַה נָעִים אַחַר כָּךְ יָשַׁבְנוּ שָׁם כָּל הַיּוֹם, וְגַם בִּסְעֻדָּה שְׁלִישִׁית וְהַשּׁוֹחֲטִים הָיוּ אָז אֶצְלִי וְדִבַּרְתִּי אָז מֵהַתּוֹרָה 'דִּרְשׁוּ' (לִקּוּטֵי מוֹהֶרַ"ן ל"ז) שֶׁמְּדַבֵּר שָׁם מֵעִנְיַן שׁוֹחֲטִים גַּם שָׁם מְדַבֵּר מֵאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל עַיֵּן שָׁם:
And behold — throughout that entire year — which was the year 5581 — I was very occupied with the matter of the press. And even so — at every moment my heart was very greatly aflame for Eretz Yisroel. And after Pesach the printing was delayed many many weeks until close to Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av — because I had no paper for the printing. And throughout all that time I was longing and very intensely yearning to leap over mountains and come to Eretz Yisroel.
