בְּיוֹם רִאשׁוֹן פָּרָשַׁת אַחֲרֵי וּקְדוֹשִׁים ז' אִיָּר נִכְנַסְתִּי לִקְהִלַּת-קדֶשׁ סְטַנְבּוּל לָעִיר גַּאלִיטֶא וּבִתְחִלָּה נִכְנַסְתִּי לְבֵית רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בְּרֶסְלֶיר וְלא מְצָאתִיו בְּבֵיתוֹ מִשָּׁם נִכְנַסְתִּי לְבֵית בְּנוֹ שֶׁל רַבִּי יוֹסֵף שֶׁהָיָה לִי אִגֶּרֶת-שָׁלוֹם מִמֶּנּוּ מֵאָדֶעס לִבְנוֹ רַבִּי פִּינְחָס וְשָׁם קִבְּלוּ אוֹתִי בְּכָבוֹד גָּדוֹל מֵחֲמַת הָאִגֶּרֶת-שָׁלוֹם שֶׁהָיָה יָקָר בְּעֵינֵיהֶם מְאד וְיָשַׁבְנוּ שָׁם קְצָת, וְכִבְּדוּ אוֹתָנוּ בְּיַיִן שָׂרָף בְּתוֹךְ כָּךְ נִתְקַבְּצוּ לְשָׁם כָּל הַגֵּרִים מֵאַנְשֵׁי פּוֹלִין, וְהָיָה לִי נַחַת גָּדוֹל שֶׁהָיָה לִי עִם מִי לְדַבֵּר בְּתוֹכָם הָיָה אֶחָד שְׁמוֹ רַבִּי אַבְרָהָם מֵאַנְשֵׁי פּוֹלִין שֶׁהוּא גַּם כֵּן סַרְסוּר, וְתֵכֶף הָלַךְ עִמִּי רַבִּי אַבְרָהָם הַנִּזְכַּר לְעֵיל עִם עוֹד אֶחָד, וְהִכְנִיסַנִי לְבֵיתוֹ וְשָׁם הֶרְאָה לִי מָקוֹם לְהַנִּיחַ הַמִּטַּלְטְלִין שֶׁלָּנוּ וְאַחַר כָּךְ הָלְכוּ עִמִּי לְהַסְפִינָה וְקִבַּלְנוּ שָׁם כָּל הַמִּטַּלְטְלִין שֶׁלָּנוּ וְהִכְנַסְנוּם לָעִיר וְקִבְּלוּ מִמֶּנּוּ מֶכֶס סָךְ מוּעָט עֶרֶךְ אַרְבָּעִים פָּארֶיס, וְהִכְנַסְנוּ הַכּל לְבֵית רַבִּי אַבְרָהָם הַנִּזְכַּר לְעֵיל וְנָתַתִּי שֶׁבַח לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ שֶׁהִזְמִין לָנוּ אַכְסַנְיָא לִכְנס שָׁם, כִּי בִּסְטַנְבּוּל קָשֶׁה לִמְצא אַכְסַנְיָא וּבִפְרָט שֶׁאֵין אָנוּ מַכִּירִין בִּלְשׁוֹנָם כְּלָל אַחַר כָּךְ יָצָאתִי לַשּׁוּק וְנִזְדַּמְּנוּ עִמִּי כַּמָּה אֲנָשִׁים מֵאַנְשֵׁי פּוֹלִין, כִּי גַּם אֶצְלָם הָיָה לְנַחַת שֶׁבָּא אִישׁ מִמְּדִינָתָם
(And this matter is true — that he beat him to the very point of death. And for several hours he did not speak. And he lay there as one dying. And he did not know at all what was happening to him. But even so — Hashem Blessed be He kept him alive. And he remained alive — praised be G-d.) And I — when I heard this — trembling seized me. And I remained astonished. And my heart ached greatly within me. The essential great anguish that I had — from such an evil report about my true friend and companion closer than a brother. And in addition to this — that I had wished him to travel with me to Eretz Yisroel — and other matters that were in my heart that it is impossible to explain. For through all of this my anguish and my pain greatly increased about this news. And because of this I wrote a letter again as mentioned above — in order that they should reply to me quickly by post. But it did not succeed — for the letter was delayed as mentioned. And because of all this — my joy was very very greatly magnified when I merited on that Erev Pesach to see the face of my true friend Rabbi Yehuda Eliezer mentioned above. Blessed is He who has kept us alive and sustained us and brought us to this time. From all of this I saw that Hashem Blessed be He was in my help — and wished me to come to Eretz Yisroel together with him — as we had already spoken of this for several years — as is explained elsewhere [above, §10].
אַחַר כָּךְ הִקְרָה ה' לְפָנַי אֶת רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן וּבִתְחִלָּה הָיָה לִי נַחַת שֶׁהָיָה לִי עִם מִי לְדַבֵּר, כִּי קִבֵּל אוֹתִי בְּאַהֲבָה וְכָבוֹד אַחַר כָּךְ הָיוּ לִי יִסּוּרִים גְּדוֹלִים עַד אֵין קֵץ מֵאַהֲבָתוֹ, כִּי תֵכֶף הִתְחִיל לְדַבֵּר עִמִּי מֵעִנְיַן בִּיאָתִי שֶׁסִּפַּרְתִּי לוֹ שֶׁבָּאתִי בִּשְׁבִיל לִנְסֹעַ לְאֶרֶץ הַקּדֶשׁ, וְתֵכֶף עָנָה וְאָמַר אֵין עַתָּה שׁוּם דֶּרֶךְ לָבוֹא לְשָׁם וְהִצִּיעַ לְפָנַי גּדֶל עצֶם הַסַּכָּנָה שֶׁיֵּשׁ עַכְשָׁו לִנְסֹעַ עַל הַיָּם, וְשֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר בְּשׁוּם אפֶן לִנְסֹעַ עַכְשָׁו לְשָׁם וְדִבֵּר הַרְבֵּה עִמִּי בְּדֶרֶךְ אַהֲבָה וְכָל דִּבּוּרָיו הָיוּ שֶׁאֵין דֶּרֶךְ נָכוֹן לְפָנַי כִּי-אִם לַחֲזר לְאָדֶעס, וְאֵין שׁוּם סְבָרָא אַחֶרֶת חוּץ מִזֶּה וְהָיִיתִי חָפֵץ שֶׁיִּשְׁתּק, וְהוּא כָּפַל וְשִׁלֵּשׁ הַדְּבָרִים כַּמָּה וְכַמָּה פְּעָמִים, וְהָיָה לִי צַעַר גָּדוֹל מִזֶּה אַחַר כָּךְ נִשְׁמַט מִמֶּנִּי וְלִבִּי הָיָה נִשְׁבָּר מְאד מְאד מִדְּבָרָיו בְּלִי שִׁעוּר, כִּי גַּם כְּשֶׁנִּכְנַסְתִּי לִקְהִלַּת-קדֶשׁ סְטַנְבּוּל הָיָה לִבִּי נֶעֱצָב וְנִשְׁבָּר מְאד מִכַּמָּה טְעָמִים שֶׁבְּלִבִּי אֲשֶׁר כִּמְעַט כָּשַׁל כּחַ הַסַּבָּל, אֲבָל הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ עָשָׂה עִמִּי חֶסֶד שֶׁעַל כָּל פָּנִים נִזְדַּמֵּן לִי תֵּכֶף אַכְסַנְיָא טוֹבָה וְתֵכֶף הִתְחַלְתִּי לִשְׁמעַ מִכָּל אַנְשֵׁי פּוֹלִין שְׁמוּעוֹת כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁאֵין שׁוּם דֶּרֶךְ עַכְשָׁו לָבוֹא לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲבָל רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן הַנִּזְכָּר לְעֵיל הֶעְתִּיר עָלַי דְּבָרָיו מְאד, וְאַחֲרָיו עָנוּ כֻּלָּם וְהוֹדוּ לִדְבָרָיו וְכָל אֶחָד וְאֶחָד כְּשֶׁמָּצָא אוֹתִי בַּשּׁוּק תֵּכֶף הִתְחִיל לְהוֹכִיחַ לִי שֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר בְּשׁוּם אפֶן לִנְסֹעַ לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁלּא שָׁאַלְתִּי אוֹתוֹ וְלא בִּקַּשְׁתִּי מִמֶּנּוּ עֵצָה, אֲבָל הוּא בְּעַצְמוֹ דִּבֵּר עִמִּי וְהוֹכִיחַ לִי בִּדְבָרִים הַרְבֵּה שֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר לִסַּע חַס וְשָׁלוֹם וְגדֶל הַצַּעַר שֶׁהָיָה לִי אָז וּבִלְבּוּל הַדַּעַת וְשִׁבְרוֹן לֵב עַד הַנֶּפֶשׁ יוֹדֵעַ רַק הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ וְחָזַרְתִּי לָאַכְסַנְיָא שֶׁלִּי, וְעָלִיתִי עַל הָעֲלִיָּה שֶׁמִּבַּחוּץ, וְיָשַׁבְתִּי דּוֹמֶם וּמִשְׁתָּאֶה, עַד שֶׁמֵּרב שְׁבִירַת לִבִּי הִתְחַלְתִּי לְהוֹרִיד דְּמָעוֹת בְּלֵב נִשְׁבָּר מְאד אַחַר-כָּךְ יִשַּׁבְתִּי עַצְמִי קְצָת, וְהִשְׁלַכְתִּי עַצְמִי עַל הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ, וְנִתְחַזַּקְתִּי קְצַת וְתֵכֶף רָאִיתִי שֶׁאֲנִי מֻכְרָח תֵּכֶף לַחְשׁב מַחֲשָׁבוֹת לִרְאוֹת סְפִינָה לַאֲלֶכְּסַנְדְּרִיָּא שֶׁל מִצְרַיִם:
On the first day of Pesach — I merited that one honored me with the mitzvah of the incision [circumcision]. And this was a great wonder to me and to all of us — that I found in Odessa — where most were then greatly opposing us — and even so Hashem Blessed be He did not abandon us. And I merited there in Odessa to have the mitzvah of circumcision on the first day of Pesach. And in particular since the mitzvah of circumcision has a connection and great unity with Eretz Yisroel — as mentioned above [§26]. And in particular on Pesach — for the essential Exodus from Egypt was in the merit of circumcision — as our Sages of blessed memory expounded on the verse [Ezekiel 16]: "In your blood — live." And praised be G-d — I entered the synagogue and arrived there at the time when the cantor was singing the repetition of the prayer after the completion of the liturgical poems of Birkas Tal. And I heard the essential Birkas Tal and the Kedushah d'Keter. And afterward I performed the circumcision upon the child according to the law. Praised be G-d.
