בְּיוֹם רְבִיעִי פָּרָשַׁת בְּחֻקּתַי הַנִּזְכָּר לְעֵיל אַחַר כָּךְ בְּעוֹד אֵיזֶה שָׁעוֹת שֶׁהָיוּ כְּמוֹ אַרְבַּע שָׁעוֹת אַחַר חֲצוֹת הַיּוֹם, נִתְעוֹרֵר רוּחַ סְעָרָה גְּדוֹלָה, וּבְכָל פַּעַם הוֹלֵךְ וְחָזֵק וְהָיָה רַעַשׁ גָּדוֹל עַל הַסְּפִינָה, כִּי הָיָה עֲבוֹדָה רַבָּה וִיגִיעָה גְּדוֹלָה לְהַמַּלָּחִים שֶׁבְּכָל פַּעַם הֻצְרְכוּ לַעֲשׂוֹת עֲבוֹדָה אַחֶרֶת, כִּי הָיָה הָרוּחַ הוֹלֵךְ וְסוֹעֵר, וְלא הָיָה פּוֹנֶה לְדַרְכֵּנוּ וְהָיָה סוֹבֵב וְהוֹלֵךְ הָרוּחַ לְכָל צַד כְּדֶרֶךְ הַסְּעָרוֹת הַגְּדוֹלוֹת וְעַל כֵּן הֻכְרְחוּ בְּכָל פַּעַם לִפְרשׁ הַוִּילָאוֹת לְצַד אַחֵר וּפַעַם הֻצְרְכוּ לְסַלֵּק כַּמָּה וִילָאוֹת וּשְׁאָר עִנְיָנִים כָּאֵלֶּה אֲבָל מִגּדֶל הָרוּחַ סְעָרָה הַחֲזָקָה, כָּל חָכְמָתָם תִּתְבַּלָּע וְהַסְּפִינָה נוֹטָה וּמִתְנַדְנֶדֶת לְכָל הַצְּדָדִים מְאד, וְהָלְכָה בַּאֲלַכְסוֹן מְאד פַּעַם נָטְתָה בְּצַד זֶה מְאד עַד סָמוּךְ לַיָּם מַמָּשׁ וּפַעַם לְצַד זֶה וְאָז הָיָה לָנוּ פַּחַד גָּדוֹל כִּי הָיָה אָז חֲשָׁשַׁת סַכָּנָה כַּנִּזְכַּר לְעֵיל וְרי"א עָלָיו נָפַל הַפַּחַד יוֹתֵר, וְיָשַׁב לְמַטָּה בְּחַדְרֵנוּ הַקָּטָן וְהַצַּר כִּי אָמַר שֶׁאֵינוֹ יָכוֹל לִסְבּל הַפַּחַד כְּשֶׁרוֹאֶה בְּעֵינָיו שְׁאוֹן הַגַּלִּים בְּרַעַשׁ כָּזֶה וְנִעְנוּעַ הַסְּפִינָה אֶל הַצְּדָדִין וְכוּ' אֲבָל אֲנִי הָיִיתִי לְמַעְלָה אֵיזֶה שָׁעָה, וְאַחַר כָּךְ יָרַדְתִּי לְמַטָּה גַּם כֵּן לְהִתְפַּלֵּל לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ שֶׁיַּעְזְרֵנוּ בְּרַחֲמָיו כִּי בְּכָל הַדֶּרֶךְ שֶׁהָלַכְנוּ עַל הַיָּם הַשָּׁחוֹר לִסְטַנְבּוּל לא הָיָה לָנוּ בְּשׁוּם עֵת רוּחַ כָּזֶה וְסַכָּנָה כָּזאת לא מִנֵּהּ וְלא מִקְצָתוֹ, גַּם עַל הַיָּם הַזֶּה זֶה שִׁשָּׁה יָמִים שֶׁאָנוּ הוֹלְכִים עָלָיו לא הָיָה עָלֵינוּ סַכָּנָה כָּזאת רַק בְּיוֹם שֵׁנִי הַנִּזְכַּר לְעֵיל הָיָה קְצָת רוּחַ גְּדוֹלָה, אֲבָל לא נִתְמַהְמַהּ כָּל כָּךְ כִּי-אִם שָׁעָה מֻעֶטֶת, וְהָרוּחַ הָיָה הוֹלֵךְ וְחָזֵק מְאד וְגַם עוֹד כַּמָּה סְפִינוֹת הָלְכוּ אֶצְלֵנוּ, וְרָאִינוּ כֻּלָּם אֵיךְ הָרוּחַ נוֹשֵׂא אוֹתָם וּמְסַבֵּב אוֹתָם, עוֹלִים שָׁמַיִם וְיוֹרְדִים תְּהוֹמוֹת, וְכֵן הָיָה בַּסְּפִינָה שֶׁלָּנוּ וְנִמְשַׁךְ הָרוּחַ סְעָרָה הֶחָזָק הַזֶּה הַרְבֵּה הַרְבֵּה וּלְעֵת עֶרֶב הֻכְרְחוּ לְהוֹרִיד הָאַנְקֶיר וּלְסַלֵּק הַוִּילָאוֹת, וְהֶעֶמִידוּ הַסְּפִינָה בְּעֵת תְּפִלַּת הַמִּנְחָה וְנָתַנּוּ שֶׁבַח וְהוֹדָאָה לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ שֶׁהֶעֱמִידוּ הַסְּפִינָה שֶׁעַכְשָׁו אֵין הַסַּכָּנָה גְּדוֹלָה כָּל כָּךְ, וְהַיָּם הוֹלֵךְ וְסוֹעֵר כְּסִיר נָפוּחַ בְּרוּחַ סְעָרָה וְרַעַשׁ גָּדוֹל גַּם כָּל הַלַּיְלָה וּמִגּדֶל הַשְׁלָכַת הַסְּפִינָה וְטִלְטוּלָהּ וְנִעְנוּעָהּ הַקָּשֶׁה עוֹלָה וְיוֹרֶדֶת וְכוּ' עַל יְדֵי זֶה הִתְחַלְנוּ לַחֲלשׁ, עַד אֲשֶׁר בְּעֵת תְּפִלַּת עַרְבִית נֶחֱלַשְׁתִּי מְאד, וַאֲנִי נָתַתִּי הֲקָאוֹת שְׁתֵּי פְּעָמִים בִּתְחִלַּת הַלַּיְלָה גַּם בְּעֵת שֶׁעָמְדָה הַסְּפִינָה אַף עַל פִּי כֵן לא הָיָה לָנוּ מְנוּחָה, כִּי הָיְתָה מִתְנַעְנַעַת בְּטִלְטוּל הַקָּשֶׁה מְאד וְכֵן הָיָה כָּל הַלַּיְלָה וְלא אָכַלְנוּ בָּעֶרֶב כִּי-אִם מְעַט וְהָיָה לִי הֲקָאוֹת כַּנִּזְכַּר לְעֵיל גַּם לְעֵת עֶרֶב הָלַךְ רַבִּי יְהוּדָא אֱלִיעֶזֶר וְרָצָה לִשְׁאב מַיִם מִן הַיָּם לְצָרְכֵּנוּ וְהָלַךְ מַאטְרָאס אֶחָד וְהִשְׁלִיךְ עָלָיו חֶבֶל עַל ראשׁוֹ בְּדֶרֶךְ שְׂחוֹק, וְעַל יְדֵי זֶה הִפִּיל הַכּוֹבַע שֶׁלּוֹ לְתוֹךְ הַיָּם וְנֶאֱבַד עַד הַיּוֹם
And behold — close to Wednesday — I recalled that three days had passed and I had still not been to the Consul's house about the ticket [the passport] that our captain had left there and commanded us to go and exchange. And so on Wednesday we hurried after prayer and sailed to Galata. And on the same boat were those people who had bought books in the morning — who wished to buy more. And as we traveled over the sea we spoke words of Torah. And they told me a Torah teaching: that the middle letters of the word Yaakov — yod, ayin, kuf, beis — equal the value of lev [heart]. And at first they asked me: when would Mashiach come? I answered: this was hidden from every living being — for it was the end of wonders. As Daniel said: "seal the matters." And even Hashem Blessed be He Himself did not reveal it from His heart to His mouth — as written in the Tikkunim: "To My heart I revealed it and to My limbs I did not reveal it." And they engaged me in explaining these words. I answered: there were Tzadikim called the aspect of lev — to whom Hashem revealed the end of wonders. And there were Tzadikim called the aspect of eivarim — to whom He did not reveal it. And they asked: who was called lev? And then they told me the matter of the word Yaakov mentioned above. Afterward I revealed to them the wondrous matter that Rabbainu zichrono livracha revealed on the verse "for it shall not be forgotten from the mouth of his descendants" — that the final letters spell Yochay — as printed at the beginning of Sefer Likutay Moharan. And this pleased them greatly. And I also told them about V'eileh Shemos and so on — whose final letters spell Tehillim-Teshuvah [Likutay Tinyanna §73] — though I could not tell them the whole matter, since they did not understand our holy tongue well. And all of this seemed to us a great wonder and a wondrous salvation of Hashem — that I merited in Istanbul to speak from the Torah of Rabbainu zichrono livracha and to sell there his holy books — which were the beginning of the redemption. And I arrived in Galata close to midday. And my host immediately informed me there was a ship going to Alexandria — and on holy Shabbas or the following day it would depart. And I was very eager to rush to the Consul about the ticket. I did not wish to linger with the men who had come to buy more books, and I sent them away and went quickly — I and Rabbi Yehuda Eliezer and the host Rabbi Avraham — immediately to the city of Byale where all the Consuls sat. And he led us through the road of the Ishmaelite cemetery — even though in truth there was a closer road, but all this was intentional — until we came to the Austrian Consulate. When we entered they pushed us from here to there as was their way, until we came before the Secretary. And immediately he showed me my ticket and asked: was this it? I answered: yes. But in truth it was clearly written in the ticket that I was a subject of the Emperor of Austria. He answered: that was not so — for many people had come here and brought the Consul's own ticket. I told him: let him read what was inside and he would see it written that I was from Austria. He replied: I do not know the Russian language — go give it to someone expert in Russian to read.
גַּם בְּכָל הַלַּיְלָה הָיָה הָרוּחַ הוֹלֵךְ וְסוֹעֵר מְאד, וַאֲנַחְנוּ שָׁכַבְנוּ לִישׁן בַּחֲלִישׁוּת גָּדוֹל וְנוֹסָף לָזֶה הָיָה לָנוּ עוֹד סַכָּנָה בְּאוֹתוֹ הַלַּיְלָה כִּי בְּחַדְרֵנוּ הַצַּר וְהָאָרךְ קְצָת הָיָה שָׁם עוֹד אֶחָד מֵאַנְשֵׁי הַסְּפִינָה, וְאָז הָיָה לוֹ כְּאֵב הַשִּׁנַּיִם, וְהֵבִיא לְחַדְרֵנוּ אֵשׁ וְעִשֵּׁן עָלָיו צוּקֶער (סוּכַּר) לִרְפוּאָה וְקדֶם הַשֵּׁנָה בָּא עַל דַּעְתִּי חֲשָׁשָׁה זאת מִי יוֹדֵעַ מַה יִהְיֶה מֵהָאֵשׁ שֶׁהִכְנִיס, כִּי מֵחֲמַת שֶׁהָאֲרֻבָּה שֶׁבַּחֶדֶר פְתוּחָה אֶל הַחוּץ לַאֲוִיר הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָרוּחַ מְנַשֵּׁב בִּפְרָט רוּחַ סְעָרָה כָּזאת עַל כֵּן בְּוַדַּאי צְרִיכִין לִשְׁמר עַצְמוֹ מִן הָאֵשׁ שָׁם מְאד וּבֶאֱמֶת הִקְפִּיד הַקַּפִּיטַאן בְּכָל עֵת שֶׁהִכְנַסְנוּ נֵר לַחֶדֶר שֶׁלּא יִדְלַק בְּעֵת הַשֵּׁנָה, וּבִפְרָט בְּלֵיל שַׁבָּת שֶׁהִדְלַקְנוּ שֶׁמֶן וְאַחַר הַסְּעֻדָּה שֶׁל לֵיל שַׁבָּת נִשְׁאַר עוֹד שֶׁמֶן בַּצִּנְצֶנֶת, וְהָיָה אָסוּר לָנוּ לִישׁן עַד שֶׁרָמַזְנוּ לְמַטְרָאס אֶחָד שֶׁיְּכַבֶּה הַנֵּר גַּם אַחַר כָּךְ לא הִכְנַסְנוּ שׁוּם נֵר לְחַדְרֵנוּ וְאָכַלְנוּ בַּלַּיְלָה בַּחוּץ עַל הַסְּפִינָה לְאוֹר הַכּוֹכָבִים, וְעַכְשָׁו הָלַךְ הַנִּזְכָּר לְעֵיל וְהִכְנִיס אֵשׁ בְּחַדְרֵנוּ בַּלַּיְלָה וְהָיָה עָלַי פַּחַד גַּם קדֶם הַשֵּׁנָה, אֲבָל לא יָכלְתִּי לוֹמַר לוֹ, מֵחֲמַת שֶׁאֵינוֹ מֵבִין בִּלְשׁוֹנוֹתֵינוּ גַּם יָדַעְתִּי כִּי לא יְצַיֵּת לִי וְשָׁכַבְתִּי לִישׁן וַיְהִי בְּתוֹךְ הַלַּיְלָה הֱקִיצוֹתִי, וְהִנֵּה אֵשׁ גְּדוֹלָה בּוֹעֶרֶת עַל הַשֻּׁלְחָן וְהַלַּהַב עוֹלֶה לְמַעְלָה כִּי הָיוּ מֻנָּחִים סִפְרֵי פְּסוּלִים שֶׁלָּהֶם שָׁם עַל הַשֻּׁלְחָן וּשְׁאָר נְיָרוֹת וְכֻלָּם נִשְׂרְפוּ וְגַם קְצָת מִגּוּף הַשֻּׁלְחָן אֲבָל בְּעֵת שֶׁהֱקִיצוֹתִי כְּבָר נוֹדַע לְאֶחָד זאת, וְעָמְדוּ וְעָסְקוּ לְכַבּוֹת, וְאָמְרוּ לָזֶה שֶׁגָּרַם זאת אַל תְּפַחֵד וְגַם אֲנִי נָתַתִּי לָהֶם מִמֵּימֵי הַנְּטִילָה שֶׁלָּנוּ וְכִבּוּ וְאַחַר כָּךְ יָרְדוּ עוֹד מַאטְרָאסִין וְהֵבִיאוּ דְּלִי מַיִם וּתְהִלָּה לָאֵל שָׁקְעָה הָאֵשׁ וְגדֶל סַכָּנָה זאת אֵין לְשַׁעֵר כִּי הַחֶדֶר צַר מְאד וְלא הָיָה בּוֹ שׁוּם פֶּתַח כִּי-אִם אֲרֻבָּה קְטַנָּה שֶׁבַּעֲלִיַּת הַסְּפִינָה, וְאִם חַס וְשָׁלוֹם הָיָה מִתְפַּשֵּׁט הָאֵשׁ עוֹד לְצַד הָאֲרֻבָּה שֶׁהָיְתָה סְמוּכָה לְשָׁם מְאד, לא הָיָה לָנוּ שׁוּם מָקוֹם לִבְרחַ מִן הָאֵשׁ חַס וְשָׁלוֹם וְרי"א יָשֵׁן וְלא יָדַע בְּכָל זֶה
And we went away in very deflated spirit. And also within his words he had mentioned the language of suspicion of spies — Heaven forbid. And I had great anguish and fear. We went with the ticket home. I went up to the upper floor and sat astonished. Afterward the host Rabbi Avraham inquired and investigated until he found who was expert in Russian — a scribe who had remained from the Russian Consulate, for at that time there was no Russian Consul there — he had gone home because of the Greek disputes as was known. The scribe came out to meet us at the gatehouse. We described our need. He took the ticket and read it — and said it was written there that I was a subject of His Majesty from Austria. But the seal — the eagle seal affixed on it — did not look right to him, for the shape of a letter was completely unrecognizable — for in truth it was very blurred. And the signature of Count Lodziran himself — he said he did not recognize his handwriting, for it was already twelve years he had been here. But this was strange in his eyes — that the round seal was very very blurred to the point that the eagle image and the letters were completely unrecognizable. And we had great anguish. He immediately went up and copied the ticket letter by letter — brought it back to us signed — and told us verbally: it was written there that the ticket showed I was a subject of His Majesty from Austria — but the Count's signature he did not recognize. And immediately great fear was in my heart — perhaps he would ruin things further — Heaven forbid.
בַּבּקֶר בְּיוֹם חֲמִישִׁי סִפַּרְתִּי כָל זֶה וְהוֹדַעְתִּי לוֹ כָּל סַכָּנַת הָאֵשׁ שֶׁהָיָה לָנוּ בְּלַיְלָה זאת, וְאָמַרְנוּ מַה זּאת שֶׁנּוֹסָף לְסַכָּנַת הַמַּיִם שֶׁאָנוּ עוֹבְרִים בָּהּ עַכְשָׁו, וְנוֹסָף לָזֶה הָיָה עָלֵינוּ סַכָּנַת הָאֵשׁ בָּרוּךְ הַשֵּׁם אֲשֶׁר הִצִּילָנוּ מֵאֵשׁ וּמִמַּיִם וְסִפַּרְתִּי לוֹ אֶת דִּבְרֵי הַצַּחוּת שֶׁאָמַר רַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה אַחַר שֶׁאָמַר הַתּוֹרָה תִּשְׁעָה תִּקּוּנִין (לִקּוּטֵי מוֹהֲרַ"ן כ') הַמְדַבֵּר מֵאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁמְּדַבֵּר שָׁם מֵאֵשׁ וּמִמַּיִם, כִּי מְבאָר שָׁם שֶׁצְּרִיכִין שֶׁיִּהְיוּ כָּל דְּבָרָיו כְּגַחֲלֵי אֵשׁ וְעַל יְדֵי זֶה יְכוֹלִים לְקַבֵּל תּוֹרָה מֵהַנְּשָׁמָה וְכוּ' וְאָז פָּתַח צוּר וַיָּזוּבוּ מָיִם וְכוּ' עַיֵּן שָׁם וְאָמַר אַחַר כָּךְ (אִיךְ הָאבּ הַיינְט גִיזָאגְט פַאר פַייעֶר אוּן פַאר וַואסֶער) [אָמַרְתִּי הַיּוֹם כְּנֶגֶד אֵשׁ וּכֶנֶגֶד מַיִם] וְעַל יְדֵי זֶה שֶׁסִּפַּרְתִּי לוֹ זאת נִכְנַסְתִּי אַחַר כָּךְ בְּשִׂיחָה נָאָה מֵרַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה, וּמִתּוֹרָתוֹ הַנּוֹרָאָה וְהֶחֱיִינוּ עַצְמֵנוּ קְצָת בָּזֶה
And behold — it was already after midday so it was impossible to approach the Consulate further. We had to wait until tomorrow. And I returned from there in deflated spirit and great worry and faint-heartedness — for I was a stranger in a foreign land, and if the Consul did not receive me — Heaven forbid — especially in such a time of war — who knew what might come from this? Afterward I was compelled to go once more to Uskudar to conclude the book matters we had left there. And we came there and I had some suffering before I found the people I had business with. And we slept overnight at the house of Rabbi Yaakov the cantor mentioned above. On Thursday after the prayer — I concluded and finished the matter of the books. And with the help of Hashem Blessed be He I collected there money for all the books I sold — about one hundred and twenty taler. And this was a great salvation for me — for at such a time much expense was needed.
אֲבָל הַיָּם הוֹלֵךְ וְסוֹעֵר מְאד מְאד, וַחֲלִישׁוּתֵינוּ גָּדוֹל מְאד, וְהָיָה קָשֶׁה עָלַי מְאד לְהִתְפַּלֵּל וְאַחַר כָּךְ רָצִיתִי לְהִתְפַּלֵּל, וְקדֶם שֶׁהִנַּחְתִּי טַלִּית וּתְפִלִּין הֻכְרַחְתִּי לִתֵּן הֲקָאוֹת וְאַחַר כָּךְ הִתְפַּלַּלְתִּי בַּחֲלִישׁוּת גָּדוֹל, וּבְעוֹד שֶׁהָיִיתִי מְעֻטָּף בְּטַלִּית וּתְפִלִּין, קדֶם שֶׁגָּמַרְתִּי אֲמִירַת וְהוּא רַחוּם שֶׁל שֵׁנִי וַחֲמִישִׁי, נֶחֱלַשְׁתִּי מְאד וְהֻכְרַחְתִּי לְסַלֵּק בִּמְהִירוּת גָּדוֹל הַטַּלִּית וּתְפִלִּין וְחָזַרְתִּי וְנָתַתִּי הֲקָאוֹת וְהָיִיתִי אָז חָלוּשׁ מְאד, וְהַיָּם הוֹלֵךְ וְסוֹעֵר בְּלִי הֶפְסֵק אַחַר כָּךְ הוֹצִיאוּ הָאַנְקֶיר וְהִתְחִילוּ לֵילֵךְ בְּתֹקֶף הָרוּחַ סְעָרָה אֲבָל לא הָלְכוּ כִּי-אִם אֵיזֶה שָׁעוֹת אַחַר כָּךְ כְּמוֹ שָׁעָה אַחַת אַחַר חֲצוֹת הַיּוֹם חָזְרוּ וְהוֹרִידוּ הָאַנְקֶיר, וְעִכְּבוּ הַסְּפִינָה וַעֲדַיִן לא פָּסַק הָרוּחַ סְעָרָה וְהַסְּפִינָה מִתְנַדְנֶדֶת בִּמְקוֹמָהּ מְאד מְאד, אַךְ בְּחַסְדֵי ה' פָּסְקוּ חֲלִישׁוּתֵינוּ קְצָת, אֲבָל עֲדַיִן לא חָזַר כּחֵנוּ עָלֵינוּ הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ יְרַחֵם וְיָקֵם סְעָרָה לִדְמָמָה וְיַחֲזִיר אוֹתָנוּ לְאֵיתָנֵנוּ מְהֵרָה, אָמֵן, כֵּן יְהִי רָצוֹן: וְעָמְדָה הַסְּפִינָה כָּךְ כָּל יוֹם חֲמִישִׁי וְהַיָּם הוֹלֵךְ וְסוֹעֵר לְעֵת עֶרֶב שֶׁהוּא לֵיל יוֹם שִׁשִּׁי נִשְׁקַט קְצָת הָרוּחַ סְעָרָה וְכֵן בַּבּקֶר בְּיוֹם שִׁשִּׁי גַּם כֵּן לא הָיָה הָרוּחַ סוֹעֵר כָּל כָּךְ אֲבָל אַחַר חֲצוֹת הַיּוֹם בְּעֶרֶב שַׁבַּת קדֶשׁ הַנִּזְכַּר לְעֵיל חָזַר וְנִתְעוֹרֵר רוּחַ סְעָרָה גְּדוֹלָה וּבְלֵיל שַׁבָּת הָיָה קָשֶׁה עָלֵינוּ מְאד מְאד לְהַעֲמִיד הַנֵּר שֶׁלּא יִכְבֶּה וְהֻכְרַחְנוּ בָּעֶרֶב בְּעֵת הַהַדְלָקָה לְהַעֲמִידוֹ עַל הַקַּרְקַע בְּקֶרֶן זָוִית וְכָל הַלַּיְלָה שֶׁל לֵיל שַׁבָּת הָיָה הָרוּחַ הוֹלֵךְ וְסוֹעֵר אֲבָל הַסְּפִינָה עֲדַיִן עָמְדָה עַל מְקוֹמָהּ וְזֶה הָיָה חֶסֶד גָּדוֹל מֵהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ שֶׁנִּתְעַכְּבָה זֶה הַזְּמַן, שֶׁעַל יְדֵי זֶה הָיָה הַרְוָחָה קְצָת וְכחַ לִסְבּל וְאַף עַל פִּי כֵן הָיִינוּ חַלָּשִׁים קְצָת מִכְּבָר, וְגַם גּדֶל נִדְנוּד הַסְּפִינָה בִּמְקוֹמָהּ הֶחֱלִישָׁה אוֹתָנוּ קְצָת:
