בְּפוּרִים אֲנִי הָלַכְתִּי אִתּוֹ וְעִם רַב שְׁמוּאֵל הוּרְבִיץ וְרָקַדְנוּ בְּיַחַד בַּמָּלוֹן שֶׁל הַגֶּרְמָנִים בִּטְבֶרְיָה, וְגַם אֲנִי וְהַנֶּכֶד שֶׁלִּי לָמַדְנוּ אִתּוֹ 'לִקּוּטֵי מוֹהֲרַ"ן'. כֻּלָּם יָדְעוּ שֶׁאֲנִי חָבֵר שֶׁלּוֹ. הוּא עָשָׂה צִלּוּם, אֲנִי וְהוּא, אֲנַחְנוּ שְׁנֵינוּ עַל תְּמוּנָה אַחַת, הַנָּשִׂיא שָׁזָר וְיִשְׂרָאֵל בֶּער אוֹדֶסֶר - הֶחָבֵר הֲכִי גָּדוֹל וַהֲכִי טוֹב שֶׁל הַנָּשִׂיא שָׁזָר. הוּא הָיָה אִישׁ מְלֻמָּד, אִי אֶפְשָׁר לְבַטֵּל אִישׁ כָּזֶה. הוּא אָמַר לָרַדְיוֹ שֶׁכָּל מִי שֶׁיִּגַּע בִּי, בִּכְבוֹדִי - תֵּכֶף לַמַּעֲצָר, בְּלִי שׁוּם מִשְׁפָּט!

אֲנִי הָיָה לִי חֶדֶר עַל צִיּוּן הַתַּנָּא הַקָּדוֹשׁ רַבִּי מֵאִיר בַּעַל-נֵס וְהָיָה לִי שָׁמָּה אֶפְשָׁרוּת לַעֲסֹק בַּעֲבוֹדַת הַשֵּׁם, בַּתּוֹרָה וּתְפִלָּה, וּבָא חֲבֵר-כְּנֶסֶת אֶחָד עַז-פָּנִים, הוּא הָיָה רוֹצֶה לִזְרֹק אוֹתִי מֵהַדִּירָה וְהַנָּשִׂיא לָחַם אִתּוֹ. הַמַּזְכִּירָה שֶׁל שָׁזָר הִיא יוֹדַעַת הַכֹּל מַה שֶׁהַנָּשִׂיא עָשָׂה בִּשְׁבִיל זֶה, אֵיזֶה מְסִירוּת נֶפֶשׁ הָיָה לוֹ. עַל-יָדָהּ הָיָה כָּל הַכֹּחַ שֶׁל הַנָּשִׂיא. אֲבִיבָה הִיא הַיּוֹעֵץ הַמִּשְׁפָּטִי שֶׁל הַנָּשִׂיא, וְהִיא יוֹדַעַת דְּבָרִים כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁהָיָה לִי עִם הַנָּשִׂיא, סוֹדוֹת כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁלֹּא יָדַע מִזֶּה שׁוּם אָדָם, כֵּן.
Now is the time of redemption — very close. This is a secret. One does not know the day — but it is close. So says Rabbi Nachman. This is also written in the Petek: "And regarding you I said: my fire will be kindled until the coming of Mashiach." "And regarding you I said" — nu, you must be in joy!
אוֹתוֹ חֲבֵר-כְּנֶסֶת הוּא הָיָה עַז-פָּנִים, הוּא לֹא רָצָה לִשְׁמֹע לְהַנָּשִׂיא, אֲבָל הַסּוֹף הָיָה שֶׁהוּא נָתַן לְהַנָּשִׂיא אֶת הַכְּתֹבֶת שֶׁל בַּעַל-הַדִּירָה וְהַנָּשִׂיא פָּעַל אֶצְלוֹ שֶׁיַּשְׁאִיר אוֹתִי כָּל יְמֵי חַיָּי בְּהַדִּירָה.
And Shazar said that this letter will bring the redemption to the world. He was not mad — he spoke with all his heart: "Guard this. A time will come that this piece of paper will conquer the entire world. This letter — it will bring the redemption!" So he said to me. If he had been alive — he would have danced…
הַנָּשִׂיא שָׁזָר הוּא עָשָׂה מְסִירוּת נֶפֶשׁ, הוּא הִדְפִּיס אֶת הַסֵּפֶר 'כִּתְבֵי רַבִּי נַחְמָן' וְנָתַן בְּמַתָּנָה לְכָל הַפְּקִידִים שֶׁל הַמִּשְׂרָד שֶׁלּוֹ. הוּא נָתַן לְכָל הַחֲבֵרִים שֶׁלּוֹ בְּלִי כֶּסֶף.
Blessed be Hashem — Hashem arranged wonders: that President Shazar received me and felt and saw that I am a person of mesiras nefesh [self-sacrifice] and that I am always cleaving and bound to Breslov. President Shazar requested of me with all manner of requests that I write to him what I had received regarding Rabbi Nachman. And this is the book Ebay HaNachal.
אֲנִי דִּבַּרְתִּי עִם הַנָּשִׂיא הֶרְצוּג שֶׁיַּדְפִּיס 'סִפּוּרֵי מַעֲשִׂיּוֹת' בִּשְׁבִיל כָּל הַיְלָדִים שֶׁל בָּתֵּי-הַסֵּפֶר, אָז הַיְלָדִים יִהְיוּ יְחִידִים בָּעוֹלָם. הַ'סִּפּוּרֵי מַעֲשִׂיּוֹת' צְרִיכִים לְהַדְפִּיס הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד, יִהְיֶה כָּכָה, יַדְפִּיסוּ אֶת הַ'סִּפּוּרֵי מַעֲשִׂיּוֹת' וְכָל הַיְלָדִים בְּכָל הָעוֹלָם יַעַסְקוּ בָּהֶם וְכֻלָּם יִתְמְהוּ מְאֹד, יִתְפַּלְּאוּ: "אֵיךְ אֶפְשָׁר, בֵּן-אָדָם יָכוֹל לְדַבֵּר דִּבּוּרִים כָּאֵלּוּ, 'סִּפּוּרֵי מַעֲשִׂיּוֹת' כָּאֵלּוּ?! זֶה מִן הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא!"
And I was also with the previous president before Shazar — Ben-Tzvi. He was in Teveriah and I was with him at the hotel and gave him as a gift the book Likutay Halachos. He was already at the end of his days. And he saw all the letters. President Shazar told me that every letter he received from me — he immediately went to his friend President Ben-Tzvi and showed him the letter. And the two of them agreed that the essential is Rabbenu Rabbi Nachman. Ben-Tzvi read the letters and said to President Shazar to seal them and keep them: "This will be a great good for the coming generations. Be very careful — seal it. This must be printed!"
צְרִיכִים לְדַבֵּר עִם הַמֶּמְשָׁלָה שֶׁבִּזְמַן שֶׁהַחַיָּל נִכְנָס לַעֲבוֹדָה שֶׁלּוֹ יִתְּנוּ לוֹ סֵפֶר 'לִקּוּטֵי מוֹהֲרַ"ן' וְ'לִקּוּטֵי תְּפִלּוֹת', אָז יִהְיֶה עוֹלָם חָדָשׁ, זֶהוּ אוֹר הַגְּאֻלָּה! וְגַם שֶׁיִּתְּנוּ לַחַיָּל אֶת הַסֵּפֶר 'סִפּוּרֵי מַעֲשִׂיּוֹת', שֶׁכָּל הַצָּבָא יִקְרָא אֶת מַה שֶּׁיֵּשׁ שָׁמָּה, הֵם יִרְאוּ מַה שֶּׁיֵּשׁ בָּעוֹלָם...
One sees in the letters that both of them — Ben-Tzvi and Shazar — agreed with the letters and were very impressed. And they decided to seal all the letters and print them for the world. They decided that this is the redemption. So I have two presidents who said this would be good. And so Shazar did — Shazar printed my letters and gave the book the name Ebay HaNachal. What is Ebay HaNachal?
ב"ה, כ"ז אֱלוּל תש"ל.
Ebay — the letters of Yisroel Ber Odesser. HaNachal — the stream. He should have written in Hebrew: Yisroel Dov. No — he wrote in Yiddish: Yisroel Ber.
לִכְבוֹד נְשִׂיא יִשְׂרָאֵל הַמּוֹשֵׁל בְּגִנְזֵי הַמַּדָּע וְהָחָכְמָה עִלָּאָה דְּעִלָּאָה עַל כָּל עִלָּאִין שֶׁגִּלָּה רַבֵּנוּ נַחַל נוֹבֵעַ אֲשֶׁר בְּחָכְמָתוֹ יִכְבּשׁ כָּל הָעוֹלָם וְיוֹצִיאֵם מֵחשֶׁךְ לְאוֹר וְיָאִיר בְּכֻלָּם נֹעַם אוֹר ה'. כְּתִיבָה וַחֲתִימָה טוֹבָה וְחַיִּים וְשָׁלוֹם לְךָ וּלְבֵיתְךָ, וְיַאֲרִיכוּ יָמִים וְשָׁנִים עַל מַמְלַכְתּוֹ בְּרֹב טוּב.
President Shazar examined all the letters and took an extract — and he printed thirty-two letters. Through this he opened a gate: that all Rabbenu's books must be printed — and also all the remaining letters not yet printed. This alone is something very awesome. The letters he printed show that he believed in Hashem and in all the tzadikim and in our holy Rabbenu. Yes. And President Shazar does not so quickly speak such words as he spoke about the letters. In any case — he cries out, he proclaims: "I am a president — but I believe!"
יְמֵי הַזִּקְנָה קָפְצוּ עָלַי בְּחֹזֶק יָד וְכֹחִי וּמֹחִי חַלָּשׁ וְדַל מִלְּבַד הַחֳלָאִים וּכְאֵבִים וְצָרוֹת צְרוּרוֹת בְּלִי שִׁעוּר אֲשֶׁר סְבָבוּנִי מִכָּל צַד בַּעֲווֹנוֹתַי הָרַבִּים לֹא עָלֶיךָ, לֹא יִתְנוּנִי לָבוֹא בַּכְּתוּבִים כְּמוֹ שֶׁרָאוּי לָנוּ.
This is a wonder — a wondrous matter…
אִם אָמְנָם הַגּוּפִים רְחוֹקִים, אֲבָל נַפְשׁוֹתֵינוּ קְרוֹבִים מְאֹד, כִּי אֲנַחְנוּ קְשׁוּרִים יַחַד בְּיִחוּדָא חַדָּא בְּשֹׁרֶשׁ נִשְׁמַת הַמַּנְהִיג הֶחָכָם הָאֱמֶת שֶׁהוּא פּוֹדֵנוּ וְגוֹאֲלֵנוּ, הוּא שֹׁרֶשׁ יַהֲדוּתֵנוּ, הוּא כָּל חַיּוּתֵנוּ נֶחָמָתֵנוּ וְתִקְוָתֵנוּ וְתִקְוַת כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל לְדוֹר דּוֹר לָנֶצַח.
Blessed be Hashem — now from the letters was made the book Ebay HaNachal. In the letters it is written to the president: "My dear brother, my dear friend — why are you sleeping? What will be of you?"
אֵשׁ אַהֲבָתֵנוּ לֹא תִּכְבֶּה וְלֹא תָּמוּשׁ לְעוֹלָם וּלְעוֹלְמֵי עוֹלָמִים, ה' יוֹדֵעַ תַּעֲלוּמוֹת לְבָבִי כִּי אֵשׁ אַהֲבָתְךָ תּוּקַד תָּמִיד בְּלִבִּי עַד אֵין סוֹף, וְיוֹמָם וָלַיְלָה כָּל מַחְשְׁבוֹתַי עָלֶיךָ עַל טוֹבָתְךָ וִישׁוּעָתְךָ בַּגּוּף וּבַנֶּפֶשׁ, וּמִתְפַּלֵּל וּמִתְחַנֵּן שֶׁיָּאִיר ה' בְּלִבְּךָ אוֹר הָאֱמֶת, אוֹר הֶחָדָשׁ פֶּלֶא הַפְּלָאוֹת, אוֹר הָאוֹרוֹת הַנּוֹרָא מְאֹד, נַחַל נוֹבֵעַ, אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה חָפֵץ בּוֹ וּמִשְׁתּוֹקֵק וְחוֹמֵד בִּכְלוֹת הַנֶּפֶשׁ שֶׁיִּתְגַּלֶּה וְיִתְפָּאֵר וְיִתְפַּרְסֵם בְּכָל הָעוֹלָם, כִּי עַל-יְדֵי זֶה יִתָּקֵן הָעוֹלָם בְּתַכְלִית שְׁלֵמוּת הַתִּקּוּן.
Have you seen the Ebay HaNachal? The Ebay HaNachal — this is a matter. Before the coming of Mashiach the Ebay HaNachal will be revealed. Yes.
אָחִי חֲבִיבִי חֶמְדַּת לְבָבִי, הוֹד לִבִּי וְנַפְשִׁי, אֵינֶנִּי יָכוֹל לְהָזִיז אַהֲבָתִי וּתְשׁוּקָתִי וְגַעְגּוּעַי מֵאִתְּךָ אֲפִלּוּ שָׁעָה אַחַת, כִּי תָּלוּי בָּזֶה דְּבָרִים עֶלְיוֹנִים נֶעֱלָמִים וְנוֹרָאִים שֶׁהֵם יְשׁוּעַת יִשְׂרָאֵל. דַּע כִּי כָּל דִּבּוּר וְדִבּוּר שֶׁיָּצָא מִפִּי רַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה עוֹלִים עַד אֵין סוֹף וְיוֹרְדִים עַד תְּהוֹם רַבָּה לְהָרִים וּלְהַגְבִּיהַּ כָּל הָעוֹלָם לַה' יִתְבָּרַךְ, אֲפִלּוּ הָרְחוֹקִים שֶׁנִּתְרַחֲקוּ לְגַמְרֵי לְגַמְרֵי מִקְּדֻשַּׁת הַתּוֹרָה וְיָרְדוּ פְּלָאִים לְתַכְלִית הַיְרִידָה שֶׁאֵין יְרִידָה לְמַטָּה מִמֶּנָּה, גַּם עֲלֵיהֶם וְעָלֵינוּ הִגִּיעַ רַחֲמָיו בַּדּוֹר הֶעָנִי הַזֶּה, לְעוֹרְרָם וּלְהַקִּיצָם, לְתוֹמְכָם וּלְסַעֲדָם, לְהַחֲלִימָם וּלְרַפְּאוֹתָם וּלְהַעֲלוֹתָם לְתַכְלִית תַּכְלִית הָעֲלִיָּה. אַשְׁרֵינוּ, אַשְׁרֵינוּ, שֶׁזָּכִינוּ בְּדוֹרוֹתֵינוּ אֵלֶּה יוֹתֵר מִכָּל הַדּוֹרוֹת הַקּוֹדְמִים מֵעֵת בְּרִיאַת הָעוֹלָם. אַשְׁרֵי אָזְנֶיךָ וְאַשְׁרֵי עֵינֶיךָ וְלִבְּךָ שֶׁרָאִיתָ וְשָׁמַעְתָּ וְהֵבַנְתָּ אֶת כָּל זֶה, וְיוֹתֵר מִזֶּה נִזְכֶּה לֵידַע לֶעָתִיד בְּעֵת שֶׁאֱמֶת מֵאֶרֶץ תִּצְמַח.
Every person who sees the letters becomes a ba'al teshuvah! Make an effort to obtain the book Ebay HaNachal — then you will be a Breslov Chassid!
אַהֲבָה הַפְּלִיאָה שֶׁלָּנוּ נוֹלְדָה בִּטְבֶרְיָא בְּיוֹם ט"וּ בִּשְׁבָט תשי"ז, מֵאַהֲבָה וְהַיִּחוּד הַקָּדוֹשׁ הַזֶּה נוֹלַד לָנוּ בֵּן לְמַזָּל טוֹב וְקָרָאתָ שְׁמוֹ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל אִבֵּי הַנַּחַל, עַל שֵׁם הַנַּחַל נוֹבֵעַ מְקוֹר חָכְמָה. הַבֵּן הַיָּקָר הַזֶּה הוּא חָשׁוּב וְחָבִיב מְאֹד בְּעֵינֵי אֱלֹקִים וְאָדָם. מֵהַבֵּן יָחִיד הַזֶּה נוֹלַד הַמְתָקוֹת וִישׁוּעוֹת גְּדוֹלוֹת לְעַם יִשְׂרָאֵל, כַּיָּדוּעַ לְךָ קְצָת כַּמָּה וְכַמָּה חָבִיב וְחָמוּד הַבֵּן שֶׁלָּנוּ אֵצֶל גְּדוֹלֵי הַתּוֹרָה וְהַיִּרְאָה אֲשֶׁר כֻּלָּם מְשַׁבְּחִים וּמַפְלִיאִים אוֹתוֹ בְּלִי שִׁעוּר, וְכֻלָּם מִתְפַּלְּאִים מְאֹד עַל עִנְיַן הַקֶּשֶׁר שֶׁלָּנוּ שֶׁעַל-יָדוֹ נִתְגַּדֵּל וְנִתְקַדֵּשׁ כְּבוֹד ה' לְמַעְלָה וּלְמַטָּה.
The book Ebay HaNachal draws everyone close — everyone. Whoever reads in the book says it is a wonder. From these letters many ba'alei teshuvah were made.
מֵאֵת ה' הָיְתָה זֹאת לִכְתֹּב לְךָ דִּבּוּרִים קְדוֹשִׁים אֵלּוּ שֶׁלֹּא עָלָה עַל דַּעְתִּי בִּתְחִלַּת הַכְּתִיבָה לְכָתְבָם.
See — see the letters! They are very arousing. Through these letters you will do teshuvah…
זֶה הַיּוֹם ט"וּ בִּשְׁבָט עָשָׂה ה' נִפְלָאוֹת נָגִילָה וְנִשְׂמְחָה בּוֹ. זֶה עַכְשָׁו בְּאֶמְצַע הַכְּתִיבָה בָּא אֵלַי מִכְתָּב וּבִרְכָתוֹ הַלְּבָבִית בְּצֵרוּף צֵ'ק עַל סַךְ מֵאָה לִירוֹת יִשְׂרְאֵלִיּוֹת וְנִתְוַסֵּף לִי שִׂמְחָה עַל שִׂמְחָתִי, מֵעִמְקֵי לְבָבִי אַבִּיעַ לִכְבוֹד מַעֲלָתוֹ הָרָם רֹב תּוֹדוֹת וּתְשׁוּאוֹת חֵן חֵן עַל הַטּוּב וְהַחֶסֶד אֲשֶׁר גָּמַל עָלַי, יְשַׁלֵּם ה' פָּעֳלוֹ הַטּוֹב וּתְהִי מַשְׂכֻּרְתּוֹ שְׁלֵמָה, יִשָּׂא בְּרָכָה מֵאֵת ה' וְיַצְלִיחוֹ בְּכָל אֲשֶׁר יִפְנֶה וְיִזְכֶּה לִרְאוֹת הִתְגַּלּוּת הָאֱמֶת בָּעוֹלָם.
(A Chassid who had read the book Ebay HaNachal arrived with great enthusiasm to Rabbi Yisroel to tell him there is no greater or holier book than this book.)
דִּבְרֵי עַבְדּוֹ וְאוֹהֲבוֹ הַנֶּאֱמָן הַמְשָׁרְתוֹ בְּכָל לֵב וָנֶפֶשׁ, מְבָרְכוֹ בְּשָׁנָה טוֹבָה וּמְאֻשֶּׁרֶת לְחַיִּים טוֹבִים וַאֲרֻכִּים.
Yes. Every letter is the light of Hashem — every word: the light of Hashem! Hidden from all the worlds! Hidden from the entire world!
יִשְׂרָאֵל דֹּב אוֹדֶסֶר.
There are still letters not yet printed. Shazar printed only the letters that make a great impression — but there are now letters to bring to print: more beautiful even than these. Nu — one must pray for mercy…
עֶרֶב חַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת, רַבִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַחֲסִידָיו לְאַחַר טְבִילַת הַמִּקְוֶה לִכְבוֹד יוֹם טוֹב...

אוֹי אַשְׁרֵינוּ, מִכָּל הָעַמִּים הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ בַּחֲסָדָיו נָתַן לָנוּ אֶת הַתּוֹרָה, "בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה הַשֵּׁם, נוֹתֵן הַתּוֹרָה". לְמִי נָתַן? רַק לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, לַיְּהוּדִים. שֶׁנִּשְׁמֹר הַתּוֹרָה וְהַמִּצְווֹת - זֶה הָעִקָּר, "הַחָכְמָה תְּחַיֶּה אֶת בְּעָלֶיהָ!"
Shazar told me he was only a Breslov Chassid — but the world was entirely distant from Breslov. Only now one can speak — for the world is drawing itself to Rabbenu. They were all opponents — a certain Admor [Chassidic leader] and all of them. So Shazar was silent. But he left with the pen what he left…
בְּחַג לֵיל הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת עִקַּר הַתִּקּוּן הוּא לֹא לִישֹׁן, וּבְהוֹשַׁעְנָא רַבָּה עִקַּר הַתִּקּוּן הוּא לוֹמַר תְּהִלִּים וְהַתִּקּוּן שֶׁל הוֹשַׁעְנָא רַבָּה, לוֹמַר מִשְׁנֵה תוֹרָה. אֲבָל בְּחַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת לֹא חָשׁוּב אִם הוּא לֹא יָכוֹל לְהַגִּיד, הָעִקָּר הוּא לֹא לִישֹׁן; לִהְיוֹת נֵעוֹר בְּחַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת!
The name of President Shazar was Shneur Zalman Rubashov — he brought up his family from Russia. He was entirely free: without Shabbos, without anything. And through Rabbenu Rabbi Nachman he became a ba'al teshuvah!
כָּל דִּבְרֵי הַתּוֹרָה הֵם עֵצוֹת וּדְרָכִים אֵיךְ לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי, אֲנַחְנוּ לֹא יוֹדְעִים כְּלָל מַה גֹּדֶל יְקַר שֶׁל הַיְּהוּדִים, רַק הַשֵּׁם יְהוּדִי. כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר רַבֵּנוּ זַ"ל בְּאוּמַן, הוּא הָיָה לוֹ הִתְבּוֹדְדוּת וְהוּא הִתְפַּלֵּל לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ וּבָכָה לְפָנָיו: "רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם, אַבָּא יָקָר, אַבָּא רַחֲמָן, אֵיךְ זוֹכִים לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי.."
Every Shabbos there was a session of the Histadrut [labor federation] — of Mapai [the ruling party]. On Shabbos all the great ones had time — and he would travel every Shabbos from Yerushalayim to the Va'ad HaPoal [executive committee] of the Histadrut in Tel Aviv. But when Hashem arranged that a bond formed between us — he stopped traveling on Shabbos. He stopped desecrating Shabbos. He became a ba'al teshuvah. He prayed with tallis and tefillin every day. And there was a dispute at home — his wife did not want him to be a ba'al teshuvah. She said to him: "You are mad — what is this with you! You will be a president and you pray every day — you are a president?"
הוּא כְּבָר הָיָה בְּמַדְרֵגָה כָּזוֹ, הוּא כְּבָר הָיָה גָּאוֹן כָּזֶה, חָכָם כָּזֶה, צַדִּיק כָּזֶה.. כַּמָּה שֶׁעָבַד הַשֵּׁם, כַּמָּה שֶׁעָשָׂה לֹא הָיָה כְּלוּם אֶצְלוֹ, וְלֹא הָיָה כְּדֻגְמָתוֹ בְּכָל הַדּוֹרוֹת, וְהוּא הִתְפַּלֵּל וְטָעַן לִפְנֵי הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ: "אֵיךְ זוֹכִים לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי, אֵיךְ זוֹכִים לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי.."
When I came to him his wife said to me: "He is sleeping — Shazar returned tired. He is sleeping now." So his sister said to her: "He said that even if he is sleeping — wake him!"
וְהוּא הֵאִיר לָנוּ בְּכָל דִּבּוּר שֶׁלּוֹ כָּל הַתּוֹרָה אֵיךְ לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי, זֶה עִקַּר הָעֲבוֹדָה שֶׁלָּנוּ, זֶה עִקַּר הַחַיִּים, עִקַּר הָאוֹר - יְהוּדִי. כָּל הַתּוֹרָה הִיא אֵיךְ לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי, הַתּוֹרָה מְלַמֶּדֶת אוֹתָנוּ אֵיךְ זוֹכִים לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי. מַה זֶּה יְהוּדִי? הַתּוֹרָה וְהַמִּצְווֹת! כָּל מִצְווֹת הַתּוֹרָה, פֶּסַח וְסֻכּוֹת וְשָׁלשׁ רְגָלִים - רַק תּוֹרָה וּמִצְווֹת. בִּשְׁבִיל זֶה אֲנַחְנוּ חָיִים, זֶה עִקַּר הַחִיּוּת.
His wife cried out and wept: "I do not want such friends. They will say of you that you are mad — you will not be a president." She told him they would give him leave — that he should go. אֲהָהּ! מַה שֶּׁיֵּשׁ לָנוּ.. הַתּוֹרָה הַקְּדוֹשָׁה זֶה הַכֹּל עֵצוֹת לִגְבוּרָה וְחָכְמָה אֵיךְ לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי. יֵשׁ כְּבָר בָּעוֹלָם רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בַּר-יוֹחָאִי, וְעַכְשָׁו יֵשׁ לָנוּ 'נַחַל נוֹבֵעַ מְקוֹר חָכְמָה' שֶׁהוּא מְלַמֵּד אוֹתָנוּ אֵיךְ זוֹכִים לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי. זֶה הַכֹּל בִּשְׁבִילֵנוּ, לְהוֹדִיעַ לָנוּ, לְהוֹדִיעַ לְכָל הָעוֹלָם, לְכָל אֶחָד וְאֶחָד בְּבֵיתוֹ, אֵיךְ זוֹכִים לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי!
So he said to her: "I will give you a divorce whenever you want — do not be surprised!"
עַכְשָׁו זְמַן הַגְּאֻלָּה, זְמַן בִּיאַת הַמָּשִׁיחַ, וְהוּא יְגַלֶּה אֶת דִּבְרֵי רַבֵּנוּ וִילַמֵּד אוֹתָנוּ דְּרָכִים וְעֵצוֹת אֵיךְ לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִים, אֵיךְ לִהְיוֹת אִישׁ קָדוֹשׁ, בְּלִי תַּאֲווֹת. יָבוֹא מָשִׁיחַ וְהוּא יִהְיֶה חָכָם אֲמִתִּי כָּזֶה שֶׁכָּל הָאֶפִּיקוֹרְסִים, כָּל הַכּוֹפְרִים, יְקַבְּלוּ מִמֶּנּוּ הַתּוֹרָה הַקְּדוֹשָׁה - אֵיךְ זוֹכִים לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי!
He said to them: "I am already divorced." His wife wept — and he laughed…
הִגִּיעַ זְמַן הַגְּאֻלָּה, זֶה הַגְּאֻלָּה - הַתּוֹרָה וְהַמִּצווֹת. רַבֵּנוּ הַקָּדוֹשׁ גִּלָּה לָנוּ אֵיזֶה עֲבוֹדָה יֵשׁ לָנוּ הַיְּהוּדִים לַעֲשׂוֹת, אֵיזֶה עֲבוֹדָה יֵשׁ לָנוּ - רַק עֲבוֹדַת הַתּוֹרָה וְהַמִּצְווֹת, זֶה הָעֲבוֹדָה שֶׁלָּנוּ. הוּא גִּלָּה חָכְמָה כָּזֶה שֶׁלֹּא נִתְגַּלָּה עֲדַיִן בָּעוֹלָם, זֶה 'לִקּוּטֵי מוֹהֲרַ"ן' וְ'לִקּוּטֵי הֲלָכוֹת' וְ'לִקּוּטֵי עֵצוֹת', וְכֵן כָּל הַדִּבּוּרִים שֶׁל רַבֵּנוּ זַ"ל הֵם כֻּלָּם אוֹרוֹת וּדְרָכִים וְעֵצוֹת אֵיךְ לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי. יֵשׁ לָנוּ הַכֹּל מוּכָן וּמְזֻמָּן.
If they had divorced — it would have been even better! The entire world would have known that the president divorced his wife because of Rabbi Nachman. Many have divorced their wives — so there would be one more. Shazar came to me at the yeshiva in Teveriah — this was in a time of danger, in a time of pogroms. There were troubles — the Arabs killed Jews. And we walked together until the sleeping-place in peace and studied in the Likutay Moharan.
אֲנִי רָאִיתִי אֶת רַבִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל קָרְדוֹנֶר שֶׁהוּא הָיָה כָּל-כָּךְ מְקֻשָּׁר לְרַבֵּנוּ הַקָּדוֹשׁ, לַ'לִּקּוּטֵי מוֹהֲרַ"ן', הוּא לָמַד הַתּוֹרוֹת שֶׁל הַ'לִּקּוּטֵי מוֹהֲרַ"ן' שֶׁכֻּלָּם הֵם אוֹרוֹת נִפְלָאוֹת אֵיךְ זוֹכִים לִהְיוֹת יְהוּדִי.
My bond with President Shazar was a secret — the whole world did not know. If he had shown how the bond between us was — they would have said of him he was mad. They all would have thrown him out of the Sochnut [Jewish Agency]: "What — an idler!"

I made a wedding for my son — and he came from his office to the wedding that was in the north of Tel Aviv at some hotel. And the head of the Sochnut said to Shazar: "You cannot travel now — I cannot finish the work alone. Stay here."

I came to Shazar and the secretary entered and said: "Yisroel Ber has come."
כָּל מִצְווֹת הַתּוֹרָה, הַצְּדָקָה וְהַחֶסֶד - אֵצֶל יְהוּדִים, בְּלִי הַתּוֹרָה וְהַמִּצְווֹת אֵין כְּלוּם!

This is a wondrous matter — how I had friendship with the president. Is it possible to understand this? This is not in the natural way. We were such friends… The entire government was opposed and he did not listen to them. Everyone said that President Shazar was a Breslov Chassid — he has a friend: Yisroel Ber Odesser. Until today the secretary and the officials — all are amazed by this. Yes — the entire government and all know that we were a special pair of friends. Even Ben-Gurion — and so all the ministers of the government — said to me that they are not friends of President Shazar. I am his friend — I was his only friend!

Sharet asked President Shazar: "Who is this?" So Shazar said to him: "This is my one and only good friend!"
גַּם אִם רוֹצִים בֶּאֱמֶת, אִם מִתְפַּלְּלִים לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ בֶּאֱמֶת - אָז זוֹכִים, זוֹכִים לִדְבָרִים נִפְלָאִים!

So he said: "I have Ben-Gurion and also Foreign Minister Moshe Sharet — he is my friend. And I have friends. But Yisroel Ber Odesser… he dwells with me!"

All the police officers knew that when I came everything was open before me everywhere. He said: "Yisroel Ber Odesser is the one person who comes to my home as if it were his own home — without any invitation."

When he came to the hot springs of Teveriah he requested a private room — he needed to speak with me. A private room!

He was a learned man — one cannot nullify such a man. He announced on the radio: whoever touches me — whoever touches my honor — immediately to prison, without any trial!

I had a room at the grave of the holy Tanna Rabbi Meir Baal HaNes [in Teveriah]. And there I had the possibility to occupy myself with the service of Hashem — in Torah and prayer. And one impudent member of Knesset came who wanted to throw me out of the apartment — and the president fought with him. The secretary of Shazar knows everything the president did for this — what mesiras nefesh he had. Through her was all the power of the president. Aviva was the legal advisor of the president — and she knows such matters that I had with the president. Such secrets that no person knew of. Yes.

This day — the 15th of Shevat — Hashem performed wonders. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
