עצות המבוארות - Aitzoas HaMivooaroas
א שֹׁרֶשׁ הַתְּשׁוּבָה הוּא מֵרֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ. כִּי בְּרֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ מִשְׁתַּלְשֶׁלֶת הַתְּשׁוּבָה לְכָל הַנִּבְרָאִים. וַאֲפִלוּ רְשָׁעִים בַּגֵּיהִנּוֹם מֻכְרָחִים לַעֲשׂוֹת אֵיזוֹ תְּשׁוּבָה בְּרֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ. הַיְנוּ מִתְחָרְטִים עַל חֲטָאֵיהֶם וּמוֹדִים עַל פִּשְׁעֵיהֶם וּמִתְבַּיְּשִׁים בֶּאֱמֶת. רַק בְּוַדַּאי צָרִיךְ לָדַעַת כִּי הָעִקָּר הוּא לָשׁוּב בִּתְשׁוּבָה כָּל עוֹד הָאָדָם חָי עַל פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה:
A The root of repentance is from Rosh Chodesh. For on Rosh Chodesh, repentance descends to all created beings. And even the wicked in Gehinnom are compelled to perform some repentance on Rosh Chodesh. That is, they regret their sins, confess their transgressions, and are truly ashamed. But certainly one must know that the main thing is to return in repentance while a person is still alive upon the face of the earth:
