בְּעֶזְרַת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ, יוֹם שֵׁנִי שְׁמִינִי תר"ג בְּרֶסְלֶב.
He received his letter on Purim — and also today. And praised be G-d — the days of Purim passed in joy. And praised be G-d — that he fulfilled his mission yesterday — to send Rabbi Nachman the sum he wrote. And if it was delayed on Purim itself — force majeure exempts. And also he himself did not know it would be delayed until the Purim feast. And the letter he wrote then — for that alone it was worthwhile — for even though it is still hard to understand the hints well — even so they must speak greatly of this.
שָׁלוֹם לַאֲהוּבִי בְּנִי חֲבִיבִי.
And through all this — Hashem arranged through the letter about the hints — that praised be G-d — the pen produced many wonderful true words that he had not planned at all. Great are the deeds of Hashem. My beloved son — from every single work and activity — and every cause and movement that Hashem arranged — from the day he drew close to the light of our life — and what He arranged after his passing — in his work with them in the general and the particular — from all of them one can understand and see the chasadim of Hashem and His wonders without end — what the mouth cannot speak and the heart cannot think. "Rabbos asisa Atah Hashem Elohai nifle'osecha v'machshvosecha eleinu."
מִכְתָּבְךָ קִבַּלְתִּי בְּפוּרִים וְגַם הַיּוֹם. וּתְהִלָּה לָאֵל עָבְרוּ יְמֵי הַפּוּרִים בְּשִׂמְחָה. וּתְהִלָּה לָאֵל שֶׁקִּיַּמְתָּ שְׁלִיחוּתִי אֶתְמוֹל לִשְׁלֹחַ לְרַבִּי נַחְמָן הַסַּךְ שֶׁכָּתַבְתָּ. וְאִם נִתְעַכֵּב בְּיוֹם הַפּוּרִים בְּעַצְמוֹ אֹנֶס רַחֲמָנָא פַּטְרֵהּ. וְגַם אָנֹכִי לֹא יָדַעְתִּי שֶׁיִּתְעַכֵּב קַבָּלַת מִכְתָּבִי עִם הַמָּעוֹת לְיָדוֹ עַד סְעֻדַּת פּוּרִים, כִּי הָיִיתִי סָבוּר שֶׁיַּגִּיעַ לְיָדוֹ בְּתַעֲנִית אֶסְתֵּר בָּעֶרֶב. כִּי בְּעֵת כָּתַבְתִּי הַמִּכְתָּב הָיָה סָבוּר רַבִּי נַחְמָן בר"מ הַכֹּהֵן שֶׁיִּסַּע קֹדֶם מִנְחָה. וּבְוַדַּאי הַכֹּל נָכוֹן מֵעִם ה', אֲבָל הָאִגֶּרֶת בְּעַצְמוֹ שֶׁכָּתַבְתִּי אָז בִּשְׁבִיל זֶה לְבַד הָיָה כְּדַאי טִרְחָתִי, כִּי אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁעֲדַיִן קָשֶׁה לְךָ וְלָנוּ לְהָבִין הָרְמָזִים הֵיטֵב עִם כָּל זֶה צְרִיכִין לְדַבֵּר בָּזֶה הַרְבֵּה וּכְבָר כָּתַבְתִּי מִזֶּה בְּשִׁנּוּי לָשׁוֹן קְצָת לְר' אֶפְרַיִם לִקְרוּמִינְטְשַׁאג. וְהָיָה בְּדַעְתִּי לִכְתֹּב לְךָ מִזֶּה בָּאִגֶּרֶת הַקָּדוּם לָזֶה וְלֹא אִיסְתַּיַע מִלְּתָא וְאַחַר כָּךְ בְּיוֹם תַּעֲנִית אֶסְתֵּר בְּאֶמְצַע הַסְּלִיחוֹת כְּשֶׁהֵבִיא לִי רַבִּי אָשֵׁר מִכְתָּבוֹ עִם הַמִּשְׁלוֹחַ מָנוֹת. וּבִפְרָט מִכְתָּב רַבִּי נַחְמָן שֶׁיִּחְיֶה, נִתַּן שִׂמְחָה בְּלִבִּי וְנִתְעוֹרֵר בְּלִבִּי וּבְלֵב כָּל אַנְשֵׁי שְׁלוֹמֵנוּ שִׂמְחַת פּוּרִים. כִּי רָאִינוּ יְשׁוּעָתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ לָנֶצַח וְתִקְוָתוֹ לְדוֹר דּוֹרִים כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתַב רַבִּי נַחְמָן שֶׁיִּחְיֶה. וּמֵעֹצֶם תְּשׁוּקָתִי וּתְשׁוּקַת רַבִּי נַחְמָן בְּעֵסֶק זֶה נִתְעוֹרֵר לִבִּי לִשְׁלֹחַ לוֹ מִיָּד מָעוֹת מַה דְּאֶפְשָׁר, וְנִתְיַשַּׁבְתִּי בָּזֶה הֵיטֵב וְכָתַבְתִּי מִכְתָּבִים הַנַּ"ל וּבְתוֹךְ כָּךְ נִתְגַּלְגֵּל מֵאֵת ה' שֶׁנִּזְכַּרְתִּי לִכְתֹּב לוֹ מֵעִנְיַן הָרְמָזִים. וּתְהִלָּה לָאֵל פָּלְטָה הַקֻּלְמוֹס דִּבּוּרִים נִפְלָאִים אֲמִתִּיִּים הַרְבֵּה שֶׁלֹּא חָשַׁבְתִּי עֲלֵיהֶם כְּלָל, גְּדוֹלִים מַעֲשֵׂי ה' וְכוּ'. בְּנִי חֲבִיבִי מִכָּל עֵסֶק וָעֵסֶק וְכָל סִבָּה וּתְנוּעָה שֶׁסִּבֵּב ה' יִתְבָּרַךְ מִיּוֹם שֶׁנִּתְקָרַבְתִּי אֶל אוֹר חַיֵּינוּ וְכוּ' וּמַה שֶּׁסִּבֵּב אַחַר הִסְתַּלְּקוּתוֹ בְּעִסְקִי עִמָּכֶם בִּכְלָל וּבִפְרָט. מִכֻּלָּם יְכוֹלִים לְהָבִין וְלִרְאוֹת חַסְדֵי ה' וְנִפְלְאוֹתָיו עַד אֵין קֵץ מַה שֶּׁאֵין הַפֶּה יָכוֹל לְדַבֵּר וְהַלֵּב לַחֲשֹׁב, רַבּוֹת עָשִׂיתָ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹהַי נִפְלְאוֹתֶיךָ וּמַחְשְׁבוֹתֶיךָ אֵלֵינוּ וְכוּ'.
And from Hashem the steps of a man are established — for as it appears — there is no need now to travel this week to Tultchin — for he does not want to send more money until he receives a reply on the receipt of the money and the letter sent yesterday. And he also awaits receiving the letters already sent via Brody. He wonders that they have not yet arrived. Presumably when they reach him he will send them to him quickly. And in the meanwhile he hopes to Hashem that money will reach him from Tshehrin and other places. And to Hashem the salvation — to complete the work without great loans. וְהִנֵּה מֵה' מִצְעֲדֵי גֶבֶר כּוֹנָנוּ, כִּי כְּפִי הַנִּרְאֶה, אֵין מֵהַצֹּרֶךְ עוֹד שֶׁאֶסַּע בְּשָׁבוּעַ זֹאת לְטוּלְטְשִׁין, כִּי אֵינִי רוֹצֶה לִשְׁלֹחַ לוֹ עוֹד מָעוֹת עַד שֶׁאֲקַבֵּל תְּשׁוּבָה עַל קַבָּלַת מָעוֹת, וְהַמִּכְתָּב שֶׁנִּשְׁלַח אֶתְמוֹל. גַּם אֲנִי מְצַפֶּה לְקַבֵּל מִכְתָּבָיו הַנִּשְׁלָחִים מִכְּבָר דֶּרֶךְ בְּרָאד. וְנִפְלֵאתִי שֶׁעֲדַיִן לֹא הִגִּיעוּ, וּמֵהַסְּתָם תֵּכֶף כְּשֶׁיַּגִּיעוּ לְיָדְךָ תִּשְׁלְחֵם לִי בִּזְרִיזוּת, וּבְתוֹךְ כָּךְ אֲנִי מְקַוֶּה לַה' שֶׁיַּגִּיעַ לוֹ מָעוֹת מִטְּשֶׁעהרִין וּמִשְּׁאָרֵי מְקוֹמוֹת, וְלַה' הַיְשׁוּעָה לִגְמֹר הָעֵסֶק בְּכִי טוֹב בְּלִי הַלְוָאוֹת גְּדוֹלוֹת. וְגַם מַה שֶּׁלָּוִיתִי עַד הַיּוֹם יְסֻלַּק בִּשְׁלֵמוּת בְּקָרוֹב בְּעֶזְרַת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ. עַד הֵנָּה עֲזָרוּנוּ רַחֲמֶיךָ וְכוּ' הוּא בְּרַחֲמָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ אַל יִטְּשֵׁנוּ לָנֶצַח. וּלְדַעְתִּי רָאוּי שֶׁתִּתֵּן לִקְרוֹת הַמִּכְתָּב הַקָּדוּם שֶׁל פּוּרִים לִידִידֵנוּ רַבִּי יַעֲקֹב נֵרוֹ יָאִיר, אוּלַי יָבִין אֵיזֶה רְמָזִים לְטוֹבָתוֹ מֵהֶם, וְגַם לִידִידִי הַוָּתִיק מוֹרֵנוּ הָרַב נַחְמָן נֵרוֹ יָאִיר נֶכֶד אֲדוֹנֵנוּ מוֹרֵנוּ וְרַבֵּנוּ זַ"ל. וְיִפְִִרֹס בִּשְׁלוֹמָם בְּאַהֲבָה, וְאִם יִרְצוּ בְּרָצוֹן חָזָק שֶׁאָבוֹא יוּכְלוּ לְהַמְשִׁיךְ אוֹתִי לְשָׁם אַחַר שַׁבַּת הַבָּא עָלֵינוּ לְטוֹבָה אִם יִרְצֶה הַשֵּׁם. וְגַם עַל נְסִיעָה קְטַנָּה זֹאת לְטוּלְטְשִׁין אֲנִי סוֹמֵךְ עַצְמִי עַל הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ. כִּי אֶצְלִי הוּא טִלְטוּל גָּדוֹל וְכוּ'. הַמֵּכִין מִצְעֲדֵי גֶבֶר יַנְחֵנִי בְמַעְגְּלֵי צֶדֶק לְמַעַן שְׁמוֹ.
And let him write whether he was joyous on Purim as befitting. And however it was — they now need to request and pray to Hashem Yisborach — that He accept their Purim joy — with all the mitzvos of Purim — as if they fulfilled them properly in all their details. Until they merit through this the holiness and purity of the Red Heifer — to purify them from the impurity of the dead — so they merit to be pure for the Pesach offering — and to be careful from even a trace of chametz — materially and spiritually — and very careful from making the brain chametz — G-d forbid — through evil and alien thoughts — to fulfil "g'ar chayyas kaneh" — until they convert from chametz to matzah — from ches to hei — from death to life.
וְיִכְתֹּב לִי אִם הָיָה שָׂמֵחַ בְּפוּרִים כָּרָאוּי. וְאֵיךְ שֶׁהָיָה, צְרִיכִין עַתָּה לְבַקֵּשׁ וּלְהִתְפַּלֵּל לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ שֶׁיְּקַבֵּל שִׂמְחָתֵנוּ שֶׁל פּוּרִים עִם כָּל הַמִּצְווֹת שֶׁל פּוּרִים כְּאִלּוּ קִיַּמְנוּם כָּרָאוּי בְּכָל פְּרָטֵיהֶם וְכוּ'. עַד שֶׁנִּזְכֶּה עַל יְדֵי זֶה לִקְדֻשַּׁת וְטָהֳרַת הַפָּרָה אֲדֻמָּה וְכוּ', לְטַהֲרֵנוּ מִטֻּמְאַת מֵת לְמַעַן נִזְכֶּה לִהְיוֹת טְהוֹרִים לְקָרְבַּן פֶּסַח וְלִהְיוֹת נִזְהָרִים וְנִשְׁמָרִים עַל יְדֵי זֶה מִמַּשֶּׁהוּ חָמֵץ בְּגַשְׁמִיּוּת וְרוּחָנִיּוּת, וְנִזָּהֵר מְאֹד מִלְּהַחֲמִיץ הַמֹּחַ חַס וְשָׁלוֹם בְּמַחֲשָׁבוֹת רָעוֹת וְזָרוֹת חַס וְשָׁלוֹם לְקַיֵּם "גְּעַר חַיַּת קָנֶה" וְכוּ', עַד שֶׁנָּשִׁיב מֵחָמֵץ לְמַצָּה מֵחֵית לְהֵ"א מִמָּוֶת לְחַיִּים וְכוּ' וְכוּ'. מַה נָּשִׁיב לַה' כָּל תַּגְמוּלוֹהִי עָלֵינוּ שֶׁבְּכָל מִצְוָה וּמִצְוָה וּבִפְרָט בְּכָל הַזְּמַנִּים הַמְקֻדָּשִׁים וּבְכָל הַמִּצְווֹת הַנּוֹהֲגִים, בְּכֻלָּם זָכִינוּ לִשְׁמֹעַ דְּבָרִים נוֹרָאִים וְנִפְלָאִים וְנִשְׂגָּבִים כָּאֵלֶּה הַמְחַיִּן כָּל נֶפֶשׁ וָנֶפֶשׁ בְּכָל מָקוֹם שֶׁהוּא, כְּגוֹן מֵעִנְיַן קְדֻשַּׁת פֶּסַח שֶׁמְּדַבֵּר בּוֹ הַרְבֵּה בִּכְלַל כָּל הַשְּׁלֹשָׁה רְגָלִים בְּהַתּוֹרָה "מֵישְׁרָא דְּסַכִּינָא", וּבְהַתּוֹרָה תִּקְעוּ א', וּבְהַתּוֹרָה "וְאֶת הָעֹרְבִים צִוִּיתִי לְכַלְכְּלֶךָ". וּמִלְּבַד זֶה מְדַבֵּר מִפֶּסַח בְּהַתּוֹרָה הַנַּ"ל הַמַּתְחֶלֶת בַּחֲצֹצְרוֹת מֵעִנְיַן זְהִירוּת מֵחִמּוּץ הַמֹּחַ וְכוּ', וּבְהַתּוֹרָה "ט' תִּקּוּנִין" מֵעִנְיַן קְרִיאַת הַהַגָּדָה שֶׁהוּא תִּקּוּן הַבְּרִית וְאַרְבַּע כּוֹסוֹת וְכוּ', וּבְהַתּוֹרָה הַנַּ"ל שֶׁפּוּרִים הֲכָנָה לְפֶסַח וְעוֹד בְּכַמָּה מְקוֹמוֹת, וְכֵן בְּעִנְיַן קְדֻשַּׁת סֻכּוֹת וְשָׁבוּעוֹת וְרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה וְיוֹם כִּפּוּר וְכוּ' מְדַבֵּר מִכֻּלָּם כַּמָּה פְּעָמִים בִּכְלָל וּבִפְרָט, וְכֵן בִּשְׁאָרֵי מִצְווֹת כַּמְבֹאָר לַבָּקִי בִּסְפָרָיו הַקְּדוֹשִׁים. אַשְׁרֵינוּ מַה טּוֹב חֶלְקֵנוּ וְכוּ', מִי יִתֵּן שֶׁנִּזְכֶּה לֵילֵךְ בָּהֶם וְלַעֲסֹק בָּהֶם בְּמוֹעֲדוֹ וּבִזְמַנּוֹ, הִלְכוֹת פֶּסַח קֹדֶם פֶּסַח, לְפָרֵשׁ שִׂיחָתֵנוּ לְפָנָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ קֹדֶם פֶּסַח לִזְכּוֹת וּלְהִתְקָרֵב אֵלָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ עַל יְדֵי קְדֻשַּׁת פֶּסַח, וְעַל יְדֵי הָעֵצוֹת עֲמֻקּוֹת הָרְמוּזִים בְּהַתּוֹרוֹת הַנַּ"ל הַמְדַבְּרִים מִפֶּסַח, וְכֵן בְּכָל הַמּוֹעֲדִים הַקְּדוֹשִׁים. יָתֵר מִזֶּה אֵין פְּנַאי לְהַאֲרִיךְ. בִּפְרָט שֶׁיֵּשׁ לִי עַתָּה צַעַר גָּדוֹל מִנֶּכְדִּי רַבִּי נַחְמָן שֶׁיִּחְיֶה שֶׁמּוּטָל עַל עֶרֶשׂ דְּוַי וַה' יִסְעָדֵהוּ מְהֵרָה, וַאֲנִי מֻכְרָח עַתָּה לֵילֵךְ אֶצְלוֹ לְבַקְּרוֹ. מָלֵא רַחֲמִים וּבוֹרֵא רְפוּאוֹת יִרְפָּאֵהוּ מְהֵרָה. וִישִׁיבֵהוּ לְאֵיתָנוֹ בִּשְׁלֵמוּת חִישׁ קַל מְהֵרָה. וְלַה' הַיְשׁוּעָה.
Mah nashiv laHashem kol tagmulohi aleinu — that in every single mitzvah — and in particular in all the holy seasons and in all the operative mitzvos — in all of them they merited to hear such awesome and wondrous and exalted things that give life to every single soul — in every place where he is. Ashreinu mah tov chelkeinu — would that they merit to walk in them and engage in them in its time and season — the laws of Pesach before Pesach — to express their conversation before Him before Pesach — to merit and to draw close to Him through the holiness of Pesach — and through the deep counsels hinted in the Torahs that speak of Pesach — and likewise in all the holy festivals. And there is great pain now from his grandson Rabbi Nachman — may he live — who lies ill — and may Hashem support him quickly. Full of Mercy and Creator of healings — may He heal him quickly — and restore him to his strength in completeness — speedily and swiftly.
