(ח) באותו חג השבועות למד הרבה בתוך הסעדה של שחרית ובין מאכל למאכל קדם שהושיטו המאכל אל השלחן היה לומד בתוך כך [ולמד אז האדרא (זהר נשא קכז:)], ואחר כך הושיטו המאכל ופסק ואכל מעט וחזר ועסק בלמודו וכן היה בכל פעם בין כל מאכל ומאכל והוא היה סובר בכל פעם ששוב לא יתנו מאכל אחר אבל הם נתנו עוד כמה מאכלים והוא היה לומד בין כל מאכל ומאכל כנ"ל.
אחר הסעדה ענה ואמר. הם מתוכחים עמי כי אני הייתי סובר בכל פעם ששוב לא יתנו עוד מאכל והם נותנים בכל פעם עוד מאכלים. והנה הם מתוכחים עמי, כי אני הייתי רוצה שיהיה סיום הסעדה בלמוד והם רוצים גדולות שיהיה סיום הסעדה באכילה. כי יש אנשים פשוטים שאוכלים בשביל שיהיה להם כח ללמד, ויש אנשים שגבוהים במעלה והם לומדים כדי שיהיה להם דעת איך לאכל. ואני הייתי רוצה כפשוטו שתהיה סיום הסעדה בלמוד אחר האכילה, שזהו בחינת עבודה פשוטה שאוכלים ואחר כך לומדים הינו שאוכלים כדי שיהיה להם כח ללמד. אבל הם מחזיקים אותי בגדולות ונותנים בכל פעם עוד מאכל ורוצים שתהיה הסיום באכילה שזהו בחינת עבודה גבוהה שלומדים ואחר כך אוכלים, הינו שלומדים כדי שיהיה להם דעת ומח ושכל איך לאכל והבן:

(8.) On that Festival of Shavuos he studied much during the morning feast meal, between one dish and the next — before the dish was brought to the table he would study in the meantime [and he studied then the Idra — Zohar Naso 127b]. And afterwards they brought the dish and he stopped and ate a little and returned to his study — and so it was every time between each and every dish. And he kept thinking each time that they would not bring another dish — but they brought more dishes each time, and he studied between each and every dish as mentioned.
After the meal he answered and said: "They are arguing with me — for I kept thinking each time they would not bring another dish, and they brought more each time. And behold, they are arguing with me. For I wanted that the end of the meal should be with study — which is the simple level of service where one eats in order to have strength to study. But they are elevating me to greatness and want the end of the meal to be with eating — which is the elevated level of service where one studies in order to know how to eat. And I wanted literally that the end of the meal should be with study after eating — that is the simple level of service: one eats in order to have strength to study. But they are holding me to greatness and bring dishes each time, wanting the end to be with eating — that is the elevated level of service: one studies in order to have intelligence and mind and understanding of how to eat. And understand."
