קדם לזה שהיה מדבר מענין יראת שמים ובכיה לבכות לפני השם יתברך כמו תינוק הבוכה לפני אביו שנתרחקנו כל כך מאבינו שבשמים, ענה ואמר כשאני עושה תשובה הוא טובה גדולה יותר מעניני תשובה שלכם, כי אני עושה תשובה בפשיטות שאני מתחרט מאד ומתביש מאד ואני מקבל עלי שלא לעשות עוד בשום אפן. ואמר שעשה תשובה על זה הדבור שיצא מפיו על העגלה כשנסע עמי מענין רבי נחמן נתן כנזכר לעיל, ואמר שזה מעשה בעל דבר כדי שיהיה קשה וכבד ביותר אחר כך. ושאלתי אותו הלא אמר שעל ידי שפגע בנו רבי מאיר אמר זאת. ענה ואמר אף על פי כן לא היו צריכין לאמרו אז. ואמר כי היו צריכין להמתין לבלי לאמרו אז, ואם היה ממתין לא היה אומרו כלל:

He answered: "Even so — they should not have said it then. And if he had waited, he would not have said it at all."
