(יז) לענין מלבושי כבוד, שצריך לאיש כשר להדר שיהיה מלבש כראוי אם אפשר לו ולא יהיה בזוי, כי גם להצדיק אין מקרבין עצמן רק על ידי מלבושיו, שרואין שהוא מלבש בכבוד על ידי זה הוא נחשב בעיניהם להתקרב לו ואם לא היה מלבש לא היה נחשב כלל בעיניהם.
ענה ואמר הלא גם השם יתברך היה מתלבש עצמו במצרים, כי כל המעשה של מצרים היא כלה בחינת לבושין, שהיה בהכרח שיתלבש עצמו השם יתברך כביכול באלו המעשיות של מצרים עד שאחר כך התחילו להכיר אותו יתברך בעצמו כביכול, ובכל פעם הכירו אותו יותר ויותר והכירו גדלתו יתברך בכל פעם יותר. אבל בתחלה לא היה אפשר שיתקרבו אליו כי אם על ידי בחינת מלבושים, הינו כל המעשה של מצרים שהיא בחינת מלבושים כנ"ל:

(17.) Regarding the matter of honorable garments — that a pious man is obligated to take care to be dressed properly if at all possible, and should not be degraded — for even regarding the tzaddik, people draw close to him only through his garments, for they see that he is dressed with honor, and through this he is considered in their eyes [worthy] to draw close to him. And if he were not dressed [properly], he would not be considered at all in their eyes.
He answered and said: "But did not Hashem Yisburach Himself dress Himself in Egypt? For the whole episode of Egypt is entirely the aspect of garments — for it was necessary that Hashem Yisburach dress Himself [in such a manner] so that they could draw close to Him. For initially, they were unable to draw close to Him except through the aspect of garments — that is, the whole episode of Egypt which is the aspect of garments as mentioned above. And afterwards, the more they drew close, He could reveal Himself to them more and more. But initially it was impossible for them to draw close to Him except through the aspect of garments, namely the entire episode of Egypt as mentioned above."
