(ד) אמר אם לא נמצא מפרש בדברי רבותינו זכרונם לברכה בפרוש (קדושין ל) שאסור לומר גירא בעינה דשטנא [חץ בעיני השטן] הייתי אומר גירא בעינה דשטנא. ואיני מבין כלל המעשיות שנמצאים בדברי רבותינו זכרונם לברכה מתנאים ואמוראים שהיה קשה וכבד בעיניהם מאד תאוה זו. כמובא כמה מעשיות בגמרא כי אצלי אינו כלום, כלל כלל לא, ואינו נחשב אצלי לנסיון כלל ובודאי יש סוד במה שנמצא בתורה שתאוה זו היא נסיון, כי באמת אינו נסיון כלל. ומי שיודע מעט מגדלת הבורא יתברך כמו שכתוב (תהלים קל"ה): "כי אני ידעתי כי גדול ה'", אני ידעתי דיקא, אינו נחשב לנסיון כלל. ואין חלוק אצלי בין זכר לנקבה, אני רואה התאוה כמו שאני רואה אותך. היו לי נסיונות אין מספר, אך אינו נסיון כלל, אך בעת שהיה נסיון, היה לו גם כן כמה נסיונות:

He said: "Had it not been stated explicitly in the words of our Rabbis of blessed memory [Kiddushin 30]: 'It is forbidden to say: a shaft in the eye of the Adversary [Satan]' — I would say: a shaft in the eye of the Adversary. And I do not understand at all the incidents found in the words of our Rabbis of blessed memory — from the Tannaim and Amoraim — in which this desire was very hard and burdensome for them, as is brought in several incidents in the Gemara. For by me it is nothing at all — not at all, in the least — and it is not considered a trial by me at all. And certainly there is a secret in the fact that it is found in the Torah that this desire is a trial — for in truth it is not a trial at all. And whoever knows even a little of the greatness of the Creator, may He be blessed, as it is written [Psalms 135]: 'For I know that G-d is great'..."
