(מ) אמר אני יכול לעשות מכלכם צדיקים גמורים נוראים, אבל מה יהיה אם כן יעבד השם יתברך בעצמו את עצמו (כלומר שרצונו הוא שאנחנו בעצמנו נתיגע בכחו ועצותיו הקדושים להשיג עבודת השם. אבל לא שהוא יתן הכל לגמרי). וכן שמעתי עוד בכמה לשונות שאמר, אני יכול לתן יראה להאדם עד שיצא מחייו ויתבטל במציאות.
ופעם אחת בקש מאתו אחד מאנשי שלומנו הרבה בענין זה שיתן לו יראה [כמדמה לי שזה היה ר' שמעון המשמש שלו] ודבר עמו רבנו ז"ל דברים כעין הנ"ל שבודאי יכול לתן [לו] יראה עצומה רק שאין זה תכלית, כי אם כן יתבטל במציאות. והאיש הנ"ל היה משתוקק אף על פי כן שיאיר עליו יראה עצומה, ואחר כך יצא האיש מלפניו ונפל עליו יראה עצומה ומפלגת מאד, והתחיל לצעק להשם יתברך בקולות משנות מה שלא היה רגיל בכך עד שכמעט יצא מחיותו ונמשך כך עד למחרתו. ולמחרת נכנס אצלו ושאל אותו רבנו ז"ל אם הגיע אליו יראה השיב לו האיש הנ"ל שוב איני רוצה בזה ובקש מאתו שיקח ממנו זאת וחזר ולקח ממנו ושב לקדמותו.
וכן אמר לאחד אם הייתי מעביר ידי על עיניך היית רואה גדולות ונפלאות אבל איני רוצה בזה רק שאתה בעצמך תיגע בעבודת השם עד שתזכה למה שתזכה. וכן אמר לי פעם אחת בענין זה אם היה השם יתברך בעצמו רוצה, שהוא יתברך בעצמו יעבד את עצמו, אם כן לא היה צריך אותך. (כלומר שהצדיק יכול להמשיך רצון השם יתברך שיעזרהו בעבודתו אף על פי שעשה מה שעשה וראוי לרחקו אף על פי כן יכול הצדיק לעורר רחמי השם יתברך עליו שיקרבהו לעבודתו אבל לא שהשם יתברך יעשה הכל בעצמו).
גם אמר לי אתה בלעדי אינך יכול לעשות (הינו שאיני יכול לעשות ולעסק בעבודת השם בלעדי כחו ועצותיו) אבל אני בלעדיך גם כן איני יכול לעשות כלל. (כלומר לעשות לי טובה כל זמן שלא אשתדל בעצמי לקבלה, כי מה שאני צריך לעשות הוא בעצמו אינו יכול לעשות הכל בלעדי, אף על פי שבאמת הכל ממנו):

(40.) He said: "I can make all of you complete, awesome tzaddikim. But what will be — then Hashem Yisburach will serve Himself." (Meaning: his desire is that we ourselves exert ourselves through his strength and his holy counsels to attain the service of G-d. But not that he give everything completely.) And I also heard this in several other formulations when he said: "I can give a person so much awe of G-d that he would depart from his life and be completely nullified in his existence."
And once one of our people beseeched him greatly in this matter — that he give him awe [it seems this was Rabbi Shimon his servant] — and Rabbainu z"l spoke with him — <span style="color:#b8a060; font-style:italic;" title="הַשְׁמָטָה — ר' שִׁמְעוֹן">[it seems this was Rabbi Shimon his servant]</span> — and Rabbainu z"l spoke with him words of this nature, that certainly he could give him very great awe — only that this is not the purpose, for then he would be nullified in his existence. And the aforementioned man was longing nonetheless that great awe should shine upon him. And afterwards the man went out from before him, and very great and extraordinary awe fell upon him, and he began to cry out to Hashem Yisburach in strange voices in a manner to which he had not been accustomed — until he almost departed from his life force. And this continued until the next day. And the next day he came back to him, and Rabbainu z"l asked him if the awe had come to him. The aforementioned man replied: "I no longer want this" — and he beseeched him to take it back from him. And he took it back from him and he returned to his original state.
<p>And likewise he said to one: "If I were to pass my hand over your eyes you would see great and wondrous things — but I do not want this. Only you yourself should labor in the service of G-d until you merit what you merit." And likewise he said to me once in this matter: "If Hashem Yisburach Himself desired that He Himself serve Himself — then He would not need you." (Meaning: that the tzaddik can draw forth the will of Hashem Yisburach to help him in his service even though he has done what he has done and deserves to be distanced — even so the tzaddik can arouse the mercy of Hashem Yisburach upon him to draw him close to His service. But not that Hashem Yisburach should do everything Himself.)
And he also said to me: "You without me cannot do [anything]" (meaning: I cannot do and occupy myself in the service of G-d without his strength and counsels) — <span style="color:#b8a060; font-style:italic;" title="הַשְׁמָטָה — ר' שִׁמְעוֹן"><but I without you also cannot do anything at all></span> (meaning: to do good for me as long as I do not myself strive to receive it — for what I need to do is something he himself cannot do entirely without me — even though in truth everything is from him).
