(מד) שמעתי שפעם אחת ספר רבנו ז"ל ממעלת המתקרבים אליו זכרונו לברכה, שאפלו כשנשתבש ונתבלבל לאחד דעתו קצת רחמנא לצלן, אף על פי כן הם חזקים באמונה שלמה בו זכרונו לברכה. וספר מאיש אחד מאנשיו שהיה צדיק גדול, ואמר עליו רבנו זכרונו לברכה שהאיש הזה היה לו תשובת ספר הקנה. והנה מבאר בספרים (תשובת הקנה יב.) שמי שעושה תשובה זו מבטח לו שלא יחטא, ובעדו, הינו בעד האיש הזה, אני ערב שבודאי לא יחטא. ויהי היום ונתבלבל דעת האיש הנ"ל קצת וגברה עליו המרה שחורה מאד, והביאו אותו לפניו זכרונו לברכה, וספר לו האיש הנ"ל, שעקר העצבות שלו הוא ממה שאמרו רבותינו זכרונם לברכה (יומא לב:): הלל מחיב את העניים אם כן אבדה תקותם חס ושלום. רק שהוא מחיה ומחזק את עצמו במה שהוא מקרב אליו זכרונו לברכה שכחו גדול עד מאד אפלו אחר שיסתלק וכו' והוא יזכה אותו:

(44.) I heard that once Rabbainu z"l told of the virtue of those who draw close to him o.b.m. — that even when someone's mind becomes somewhat confused and distorted, G-d save us — even so, they are firm in complete faith in him o.b.m. And he told of one of his people who was a great tzaddik — and Rabbainu o.b.m. said about him that this man had the repentance of the Book of the Kaneh. And it is explained in the books [Teshuvas HaKaneh, 12b] that whoever does this repentance is assured he will not sin again. "And on his behalf — meaning on behalf of this man — I am a guarantor that he certainly will not sin." And it came to pass that this man's mind became somewhat confused <span style="color:#b8a060; font-style:italic;" title="הַשְׁמָטָה — מָרָה שְׁחוֹרָה"><that is, this one who fell into black melancholy — it seemed to him that he was going to die></span>. And he will bring him to merit.
