(ד) אמר אלו לא היה יוצא זה הספר לעולם הינו הספר לקוטי מוהר"ן היה נעשה ענין אחר כי כבר היה לו חשק כמה פעמים לעשות הלכות פסוקות על השלחן ערוך לבאר כל דין ודין בהלכה פסוקה או להציג הלכה כדברי מי מהפוסקים אצל כל דין ודין. אך עכשו שיצא זה הספר לעולם לא יהיה ענין הנ"ל. ובאמת חדושים של גמרא פרוש תוספות הם קלים ביותר. ואין אחד מהם יודע הדרך כלל של אותן החדושים ומי שיודע הם קלים מאד וצריך לזה להיות בקי בשלש עשרה מדות שהתורה נדרשת בהם:

For he had desired several times to compose rulings on the Shulchan Aruch — to explain every single law in a definitive ruling, or to state the ruling according to which of the decisors for each law. But now that this book has come out into the world — the aforementioned matter will not be. And truly the novelties of Gemara — meaning the commentary of the Tosefos — they are easier by far. And not one of them knows at all the way of those novelties. And whoever knows them — they are easy..."
