The Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman · חיי מוהר"ן
(כה) ענה ואמר זאת הוא קנאה גדולה בודאי, שיש צדיק גדול שעוסק בעבודת השם ביגיעות ועבודות גדולות כמה שנים בגוף ונפש, ולא ינוח כלל מעבודתו יתברך וסובל כמה צרות ויסורין, ואחר כך בא רך בשנים והשיג במעט זמן כל ההשגה והמדרגה שזכה הצדיק הנ"ל שעבד כמה שנים. וכמו שמצינו במדרש (קהלת רבה פרשה ה) שרבי בון עבד לשלשים [עשרים ושמונה] שנה מה שעבד תנא אחר בכמה שנים. (ואין אני יודע כונת הדברים. כי מקדם אמר שבודאי אי אפשר שיהיה פתאום נעשה צדיק גדול בלי יגיעות וטרחות ועבודות, אף על פי שהוא בן צדיק ובן גדולים. וספר משל נאה על מפרסם אחד רך בשנים שנתפרסם פתאום, ובודאי לא כל הרוצה לטל את השם יטל. המשל היה מענין האיש שנתגדל בוואליחאי אצל היעדניראל שגדלו פתאום, וכונתו היה להכעיס להאחרים שהיה להם גדלה יתרה וכו'):
(25.) He answered and said: "This is certainly a great envy — that there is a great tzaddik who engages in the service of G-d with great exertion and effort for many years with body and soul, and never rests from His service, and endures many troubles and afflictions. And then a young person comes and attains in a short time all the attainment and level that the aforementioned tzaddik achieved through years of labor." And as we find in the Midrash [Koheles Rabbah, portion 5] that Rabbi Bun, in thirty [or twenty-eight] years, worked what another Tanna worked in many years. (And there is no [contradiction here, for...])
