The Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman · חיי מוהר"ן
(כד) פעם אחת היה משיח בענין התפלות של ימים הנוראים. אמר שבתחלה הבעל תפלה מתחיל המלך, ואזי הוא הולך מקדם והעולם הולכים אחריו. כי הוא אומר תחלה, והעולם אומרים אחריו וכן מתנהג עוד להלן יותר. ואחר כך הוא מסתכל בעצמו מי אנכי לילך ולהקדים לפני העולם, ועל כן אחר כך הוא מתנהג להפך, שהעולם אומרים תחלה והוא אחריהם, כי כן מתנהג אחר כך בכמה מיני תפלות, שהעולם אומרים תחלה ואחר כך הבעל תפלה, כגון מלך עליון אמיץ המנשא, וכן אתה הוא אלקינו בשמים ובארץ. וכן ונתנה תקף וכן בכל התפלות שבכלם העולם אומרים הפיוטים והחרוזים קדם להבעל תפלה והבעל תפלה אחריהם. ובתחלה היה להפך כי הוא מסתכל בעצמו וכו' כנ"ל:
(24.) Once he was conversing about the prayers of the Days of Awe. He said: "At first the baal tefillah [prayer leader] begins with 'the King' — and then he goes first and the congregation follows him. For he says it first and the congregation says it after him. And so it continues further. And afterwards he considers himself: 'Who am I to go and precede the congregation?' Therefore afterwards he conducts himself in reverse — the congregation says it first and he says it after them — for so it is with several types of prayers: the congregation says first and afterwards..."
